The essentials of South Indian bridal hair
South Indian bridal hairstyles are built around a long braid or a large bun decorated with fresh flowers and temple jewellery. The best-known look is the poola jada, a braid fully covered with jasmine and often kanakambaram or roses, paired with a nethi chutti on the parting, a jada billa at the top of the braid and jada kuppulu tassels at the end. Kerala brides often prefer a low bun encircled with jasmine.
These styles are designed to complement Kanjivaram, Mysore silk and Kasavu sarees and the rich gold jewellery worn by brides in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. Each region has its own touches, which we cover below, along with practical tips for comfort over long muhurtham ceremonies.
Whether you are planning a temple wedding in Madurai, a Tirupati ceremony or a city wedding in Bengaluru or Hyderabad, the same principles apply: a centre parting kept clean for the nethi chutti, a strong base that can carry flowers and gold, and a style that survives several hours of sitting at the mandap during the muhurtham, kanyadaanam and saptapadi.

Poola jada hairstyle, step by step
The stylist first makes a centre parting and smooths the crown, leaving room for the nethi chutti. A long braid is created, often with a choti extension braided in for length and thickness, because a poola jada can be two to four feet long. The flower covering is usually prepared separately on a base and then fixed onto the braid with pins and thread.
Common designs include tightly packed jasmine with rows of red or pink roses, kanakambaram orange accents, or patterns with marigolds. The top is finished with a jada billa or a sun-and-moon ornament (surya and chandra) on either side of the parting. The tail ends in decorative tassels called kuppulu.
Jasmine braid for bride: lighter alternative
If the full poola jada feels heavy, a simple jasmine braid is a beautiful alternative. Make a long braid, wrap or weave strings of jasmine down its length, and add a smaller jada billa or a few gold hair ornaments. It looks traditional, is much lighter, and is popular for reception sarees, seemantham and engagement ceremonies.
For a modern bride, a fishtail braid with jasmine strings in a zig-zag pattern looks fresh. Another option is a half-flower jada, where only the top half of the braid is covered and the lower half shows the plait.
Kerala bridal hairstyle
Kerala Hindu brides usually wear a low bun at the nape, completely surrounded by several strings of jasmine, sometimes with a side flower bunch. The look is minimal, elegant and matches the off-white and gold Kasavu saree and traditional jewellery like the palakka mala and mulla mottu necklaces.
A long braid with jasmine also features in Kerala weddings. Christian brides in Kerala often wear a veil over a soft low bun, while Muslim brides typically style a neat bun under a dupatta or scarf.
Tamil and Telugu bridal hairstyle details
Tamil brides typically pair a Kanjivaram madisar or nine-yard saree with a long poola jada, a nethi chutti, and surya-chandra ornaments. The jada often has distinct horizontal bands of flowers and jewellery. Telugu brides frequently choose a jasmine-covered braid with a jada billa and sometimes a bun for the reception.
Kannada brides wear similar flower braids or a low bun with jasmine, often with a bigger focus on the mookuthi and temple jewellery. Each family may have specific customs, so ask elders about what is expected for each ritual.
Temple jewellery placement in the hair
The nethi chutti sits along the parting with the pendant on the forehead. Surya and chandra pieces sit on either side of the parting near the crown. The jada billa sits at the base of the braid or the top of the jada, and the jada naagam, a long serpentine piece, can run the full length of the braid.
Ask the stylist to anchor these with U-pins into a firm base, as gold-plated temple pieces are heavy. If you are borrowing family heirlooms, check the clasps and hooks in advance.
Store heirloom pieces in soft pouches so they reach the venue undamaged and untangled.
Tips for thin or short hair
Thin or shoulder-length hair can still carry a South Indian bridal look. Choti extensions in your colour add both length and thickness for the braid. Many stylists build the poola jada on a separate base attached to your hair, so the weight is distributed and the look appears full.
For a bun, use a bun donut or a clip-in bun and wrap jasmine around it. Make sure extensions match your shade in daylight, not just under salon lights.
Ask the stylist to fix the jada to a base braid rather than just pinning it to loose hair; this spreads weight across the head and keeps it from dragging at the nape.
Comfort over long ceremonies
A full poola jada with jewellery can be heavy over several hours of rituals. Do a trial wearing the actual jewellery, sit for at least an hour and notice pressure points. Ask the stylist to distribute pins and avoid pulling too tightly at the nape.
Keep a small water spray to refresh the jasmine, and plan breaks between muhurtham and reception so you can loosen or change the style if needed.
Eat lightly and stay hydrated before the ceremony, because a heavy jada combined with heat and hunger can make you feel faint. A short break to sit in an air-conditioned room between rituals also keeps the flowers fresher.
Jasmine, called malli in Tamil and mallige in Kannada, is the foundation of almost every South Indian bridal hairstyle. Madurai malli is especially prized for its fragrance. Kanakambaram adds an orange accent, while roses, crossandra and marigolds introduce more colour. Some brides choose all-white for a classic look, others pick a design matched to their saree's border colour.
Order the jada flowers from an experienced florist and ask for delivery a few hours before the muhurtham. Fresh flowers should be kept cool and lightly misted. Artificial jadas are also available and are useful for long, multi-day weddings or photo shoots, and they are much lighter to wear.
Discuss weight with your florist. Densely packed jasmine on a long jada can become heavy, so a balance of flowers and plain braid sections, or a shorter jada, may be more comfortable.
Kanjivaram silk with a heavy zari border is best with a full poola jada or a jasmine braid, as the structured silhouette needs a strong, traditional hairstyle. Lightweight Mysore silk or soft silk sarees for the reception suit a low bun with jasmine or side-swept curls.
Kasavu sarees, with their off-white and gold palette, pair best with white jasmine buns and minimal gold ornaments. For a contemporary twist, some brides wear a pastel Kanjivaram with a lighter jada and fewer ornaments, which looks elegant in daylight photos.
Reception and post-wedding looks
For the reception, many South Indian brides switch to a softer look: a low bun with a single jasmine string, side-swept curls with a jewelled pin or a sleek low bun with a modern saree or lehenga. Choose something lighter after a long morning muhurtham.
For post-wedding pujas and visits, a long braid with jasmine is practical, traditional and comfortable for daily wear.
For the post-wedding vratham or first visit to the temple, many brides keep a shorter jasmine string on a simple braid. It carries the bridal feeling into the following days without the weight of the full jada.
