South Indian wedding packing list at a glance
For a South Indian wedding, pack a silk saree such as Kanjivaram or Kerala kasavu for the muhurtham, a lighter silk or cotton silk for the reception, a festive outfit for any pre-wedding function, comfortable footwear that is easy to remove at temples, gold-toned jewellery, fresh flowers or hair accessories and humidity-friendly beauty products. A medium hard-shell spinner and a cabin trolley suit most two-day weddings.
South Indian weddings in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana vary in rituals but share some practicalities: early morning muhurthams, temple or kalyana mandapam venues, warm and humid weather and a strong tradition of silk and gold.
Guests from other parts of India, or NRIs returning home, can find the packing different from North Indian weddings. Here is what to bring and how to carry it.
Weddings here are also deeply tied to family and temple traditions, and guests are often welcomed warmly into rituals. Packing thoughtfully, with the right silk, simple footwear and a few practical extras, lets you focus on the ceremony and the famous wedding feast rather than on wardrobe worries.

Outfits for each event
Many South Indian weddings have fewer functions than North Indian ones, but they often begin very early. The muhurtham may be at dawn, so plan an outfit you can drape quickly. Silk sarees are the classic choice for women guests, often Kanjivaram in Tamil Nadu, kasavu or Kerala silk in Kerala, and Mysore silk in Karnataka. Pair them with matching blouses and comfortable petticoats.
The reception, usually in the evening, allows more flexibility: lighter silks, designer sarees, lehengas or gowns. Some weddings include a sangeet or mehendi influenced by North Indian traditions, so check the schedule.
Pack a comfortable outfit for travel and downtime, such as cotton salwar suits or kurtas. Temple visits before or after the wedding call for modest, traditional clothing.
Gifting customs differ too. Many South Indian families give guests a thamboolam bag with betel leaves, coconut, fruit or small gifts as they leave. Keep a little room in your tote or a foldable bag for this, especially if you are travelling home straight after the ceremony.
Packing silk sarees for the journey
Silk sarees are the heart of a South Indian wedding wardrobe. Fold each one into a flat rectangle with the pallu on top, place acid-free tissue between zari borders and wrap it in a muslin or cotton cover. Lay sarees flat in a hard-shell suitcase with a zipped divider, keeping them away from shoes and liquids.
Kanjivaram sarees are heavy, so watch your luggage weight on domestic flights, where checked allowances are typically around 15 kg in economy. Two or three heavy silk sarees with blouses and accessories can easily reach several kilograms.
Unpack sarees on arrival and hang them to let folds relax. Steam gently from the reverse side if needed, never directly on zari.
Men in the family will often wear a veshti or mundu with a silk shirt, and if you are travelling as a couple, coordinating your saree colour with his angavastram or shirt border is a lovely touch that photographs well at the mandapam.
Footwear for temples and mandapams
Many South Indian weddings take place in temples or kalyana mandapams where footwear is removed. Choose slip-on sandals or juttis that are easy to take off and put on. Avoid complicated straps and buckles.
Carry a small fabric bag to hold your footwear if there is no secure shoe area. For the reception, a pair of block heels or wedges works well. Comfortable flats are useful for travel and temple visits.
Some mandapam floors can be hot or slippery, so a pair of soft socks or foot covers can help during long ceremonies where footwear is not allowed.
Jewellery and hair accessories
Gold-toned jewellery complements silk sarees beautifully. Temple jewellery, jhumkas, bangles and a statement necklace are classic choices. Keep fine jewellery in a padded case in your cabin bag and use the hotel safe.
Fresh flowers like jasmine (malligai or mulla) are a lovely traditional touch in the hair. They are often available at the venue or nearby markets. Pack hairpins and a few clips to secure them. If you prefer, bring hair accessories such as a traditional hair ornament or a decorative clip.
Humidity can tarnish silver and imitation jewellery, so pack anti-tarnish strips and silica gel sachets.
Gajra or flower strings are usually bought fresh on the day, but a few hairpins, a small spray bottle of water to keep them fresh and a zip pouch to store them between functions are worth packing.
Beauty kit for humid weather
Coastal and southern cities can be hot and humid. Long-wear, sweat-resistant makeup, waterproof kajal, setting spray and blotting papers help you stay fresh. Light skincare, a mattifying moisturiser and sunscreen suit the climate.
Hair can frizz in humidity, so pack anti-frizz serum and a light hairspray. A traditional braid or bun often holds better than open hair.
Carry a small fan, a handkerchief and a refillable water bottle for long ceremonies.
Keep a small pouch with a comb, a mini mirror, compact powder and a lipstick in your clutch. Long muhurthams, warm halls and photo sessions with family mean you will want quick touch-ups without returning to your room.
Packing for Kerala vs Tamil Nadu vs Karnataka weddings
Kerala weddings are often short and elegant, with the ceremony held in the morning and a sadya feast afterwards. Kasavu sarees in off-white and gold, or set mundu, are traditional for women guests, though silk sarees in bright colours are equally welcome. The climate is humid all year, and monsoon weddings are common, so pack an umbrella, quick-dry daywear and silica gel sachets for your silks.
Tamil weddings are known for early morning muhurthams and vibrant Kanjivaram silks. Guests often wear rich silk sarees in jewel tones with gold jewellery and jasmine in the hair. Weddings in Chennai, Madurai or Coimbatore can be hot, so a lighter silk for the reception and a fan in your bag are useful.
Karnataka weddings often feature Mysore silk and Ilkal sarees, and cities like Bengaluru have a milder climate. Telugu weddings in Hyderabad or Andhra Pradesh may have late-night muhurthams, which means planning outfits and makeup that last through a long evening.
If you are travelling with family by car from Bengaluru to Mysuru or Chennai to Puducherry, keep the saree suitcase in the cabin of the car, not in a hot boot, as heat and humidity can affect silk and zari over a long drive.
If you are flying in from North India, remember that mandapam halls can feel warm even in December. Choose a lighter blouse fabric and pack a small travel fan or a folding hand fan to keep comfortable through long rituals.
Common South Indian wedding packing mistakes
The most common mistake is underestimating how early the day begins. Guests who have never attended a dawn muhurtham often find themselves rushing to drape a saree at 4 am. Pre-pleating your saree the night before, or choosing an easy drape, saves time.
Another mistake is wearing complicated footwear to temple weddings, then struggling to remove and retrieve it. Simple slip-ons are always the best choice. Some guests also forget that heavy silk is warm; pack a lighter saree for the reception or for a second day.
Finally, avoid packing silk sarees in plastic in humid coastal cities. Use breathable covers, air your suitcase daily and keep silica gel inside, especially during monsoon months in Kerala and coastal Karnataka.
Luggage and travel tips
A medium 65 to 69 cm polycarbonate spinner with a zipped divider plus a cabin trolley suits most two-day weddings. If you are travelling by overnight train, a hard case with sturdy wheels fits under the berth, and a cable lock adds security.
For flights, keep the muhurtham saree, jewellery and medicines in your cabin bag. Weigh checked luggage to avoid excess charges, since heavy silks add up.
Plan for an early start. Lay out your saree, blouse, petticoat, jewellery and flowers the night before so you can be ready quickly for a dawn ceremony.
