Suitcase size for Europe train travel: the answer
The best suitcase size for Europe train travel is a medium spinner of 60 to 65 cm, around 55 to 70 litres, because it fits overhead racks or the gaps between seats on most trains and is light enough to lift up the steps of older carriages. Larger cases have to go in end-of-carriage racks, which fill up quickly at busy stations.
Rail passes such as Eurail are popular with Indian travellers who want flexibility across countries. Trains are comfortable and scenic, but luggage is entirely your responsibility: no porters, no baggage belts, just you, your bag and the rack.
This guide explains how to choose and handle luggage for a rail-based trip.
Rail travel in Europe is one of the most enjoyable ways to see the continent: scenic routes through Switzerland and Austria, high-speed lines between Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam, and fast trains between Milan, Florence and Rome. But every journey starts and ends with you lifting your own bag. Choosing the right size makes the difference between a relaxed journey and a stressful one.
As a rule of thumb, if your bag needs two hands and a deep breath to lift onto a bed, it is too heavy for a rail itinerary. Aim for a packed weight of around 15 to 18 kg for a medium spinner, even if your airline allows more. That figure is comfortable for most women to lift onto an overhead rack or up carriage steps in one smooth movement, and it leaves room for gifts on the flight home to India.

How train luggage racks work
European trains typically offer three places for luggage: overhead racks above the seats, larger luggage racks at the ends of carriages, and spaces between back-to-back seats. Overhead racks suit cabin-size bags and slim medium bags. End racks take larger cases but fill quickly at busy stations, so board early.
Spaces between back-to-back seats are often the best spot for a medium suitcase, since it stays close to you. A 60 to 65 cm spinner, especially a slim or soft-sided one, usually slides into these gaps. Larger cases of 75 cm or more rarely fit.
On many trains, you can see the luggage racks from your seat, but not always. If you are seated far from the end rack, consider keeping your bag closer by choosing a smaller suitcase.
Ends-of-carriage racks are often stacked two levels high. Put heavier bags on the lower shelf and lighter ones above, and if you have a choice, take the rack nearest your seat. Some newer trains also have dedicated luggage areas in the middle of the carriage, which are worth looking for when you board.
High-speed vs regional trains
High-speed trains such as TGV, ICE, Frecciarossa and Eurostar usually have more luggage space but very short stops, sometimes just two or three minutes. Be ready at the door with your bag before the train arrives at your station, and know which carriage you are in.
Regional and older trains, including many scenic routes in Switzerland and Austria, may have steep steps from the platform to the carriage. Lifting a heavy suitcase up those steps is the moment many travellers wish they had packed lighter.
Some rail operators have introduced luggage policies limiting the number or size of bags per passenger. Check your operator's rules before travelling.
Night trains, which are returning on routes such as Vienna to Venice or Zurich to Amsterdam, have compact couchettes and sleeper cabins with very little storage. Often there is a small space under the lower berth or above the door. A cabin-size spinner or a soft weekender works far better than a medium hard shell on these journeys, so consider leaving larger luggage at a hotel or sending it ahead.
Station stairs and lifts
Many European stations have stairs between platforms, and lifts may be small, slow or out of service. Escalators are not always available, especially at smaller stations. Being able to carry your bag up a flight of stairs is essential for rail travel.
Allow extra time to change platforms, especially at large stations like Paris Gare de Lyon, Milano Centrale, Roma Termini or Zurich HB. Signs are clear, but crowds and stairs slow you down.
Practise lifting your packed suitcase at home. If you struggle to lift it to waist height, remove a few items.
Station left-luggage lockers and staffed baggage rooms exist at many major stations, and are useful on days when you want to explore a city between trains, for example a stop in Salzburg on the way from Vienna to Munich. Sizes and prices vary, and large lockers fill up quickly in summer. A medium suitcase fits standard lockers far more easily than a large one.
Hard shell or soft?
Soft-sided bags squeeze into tight spaces, have outer pockets for easy access, and are lighter. Hard shells protect contents better and are easier to clean. For rail travel, the size of the bag matters more than its material.
If you choose a hard shell, pick a slim profile and large wheels. If you choose soft, look for water-resistant fabric and lockable zips.
Large double spinner wheels help on platforms and in stations, while two-wheel rollers handle rough surfaces better. Many travellers prefer spinners for their ease in stations and corridors.
Expandable zips are handy on rail trips, but resist expanding the bag until the final leg. An expanded spinner is wider and may no longer fit between seats or in the overhead rack, which defeats the purpose of choosing a medium size.
Whatever you choose, test the wheels on rough ground before you leave home.
Security on trains
Keep your bags in sight where possible, especially on busy routes. A thin cable lock can secure your bag to a rack, deterring opportunists.
Keep valuables, passport, phone, wallet and documents in a crossbody bag worn in front. Never leave valuables in a suitcase on a rack.
Be especially alert at stops, when thieves may grab a bag near the door and step off the train. Sit facing your luggage if you can.
Many experienced rail travellers also keep their passport, rail pass and phone in a slim pouch worn under clothing on overnight or long journeys, so they can doze without worrying. It is a small habit that gives real peace of mind.
Packing for a rail trip
Packing cubes and a capsule wardrobe let you pack light and repack quickly. Plan outfits that mix and match, and pack for a week even on a longer trip, with laundry midway.
Carry snacks and water in your day bag, as dining cars may be expensive or crowded. A refillable bottle saves money.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking through stations and carrying bags. Cushioned sneakers are ideal.
Put your outfit for the next day at the top of your bag before each train journey. When you reach a hotel late in the evening after a long train day, you can simply pull out one cube and go to bed, rather than unpacking everything in a small room.
Choosing rail-friendly luggage
Lightweight spinners from Samsonite, Delsey, Mokobara or American Tourister, typically from around ₹6,000, are well suited to rail travel. Look for top and side handles, which make lifting easier.
A medium spinner plus a backpack or tote that slides over the handle is the ideal combination for rail travel.

If you are buying luggage specifically for a rail trip, test the handle height at the store. Tall travellers need a handle that extends far enough to avoid kicking the bag, while shorter travellers need one that does not wobble at its lower setting. A comfortable handle makes long platform walks far easier.
A slim, medium polycarbonate spinner in a neutral colour will also serve you well for city breaks, family visits and cruises, so it is a good long-term investment as well as a perfect companion for your Eurail adventure.
