Suitcase size for a one-week trip: the answer
The ideal suitcase size for a one-week trip is a medium check-in suitcase of about 65 to 69 cm tall and 65 to 80 litres. It fits seven days of outfits, two evening looks, three pairs of shoes and full toiletries, with room left for shopping. Experienced light packers can manage a week in a 55 cm cabin trolley, but most women are happier with a medium.
A week covers the most popular Indian holidays: Bali or Thailand honeymoons, a Europe sampler, a Rajasthan circuit, or a family Kashmir trip. It also includes week-long business trips with a weekend. Getting the suitcase size right means you are neither cramming nor dragging a half-empty bag, both of which make a holiday more tiring than it needs to be.

When cabin-only works for seven days
Cabin-only for a week works on warm-weather trips where you wear light cottons, linens and swimwear, and when you are happy to rewear and do laundry once midway. A 55 cm expandable soft trolley, a compression packing cube system and a capable personal item make it possible. You save time at the airport, avoid lost bag risk and move faster between hotels.
It does not work well for weddings, winter destinations, formal business events or trips involving lots of shopping. Remember too that cabin allowances on Indian domestic economy fares are typically around 7 kg and international carriers like Emirates and Singapore Airlines usually set their own limits. A cabin bag stuffed beyond the limit may be checked at the gate anyway.
If you want to try a cabin-only week, do a trial pack a few days ahead. Lay out every outfit, remove a third of it, then pack using cubes. Weigh the result. If you are over the cabin limit, move dense items like chargers, a book and makeup into your personal item, and wear your heaviest shoes and jacket on the flight.
Medium vs large suitcase for a week
A large suitcase of 75 to 80 cm, with 90 to 120 litres, is usually too much for one person for a week. It easily exceeds 23 kg when full, which is a common per-bag limit on international flights, and it is harder to fit in taxis, trains and small European lifts. Unless you are carrying gifts or travelling with heavy trousseau-style wear, a medium is the smarter size.
Couples sometimes share one large suitcase for a week, which can work, but splitting clothes across two medium bags is safer. If one bag is delayed, both of you still have clothes. Two mediums are also easier to lift and move than one oversized suitcase, especially on cobbled streets or railway platforms.
A one-week packing list for women
Clothing: six to seven tops, three to four bottoms, two dresses, one or two evening outfits, a jacket or blazer, a light knit, sleepwear, seven sets of innerwear and two swimsuits for beach trips. Plan outfits around a capsule palette, for example white, beige and navy with one bright accent. Each bottom should work with at least three tops.
Footwear and extras: travel sneakers, comfortable sandals, one dressy pair, a toiletry case, makeup, hair tools, medicines, an adapter, chargers, sunglasses, a sling for daytime and a clutch for evenings. Pack a foldable duffle at the bottom of the suitcase; it becomes your extra bag for shopping on the way home and costs you almost no space on the outbound journey.
For a week in a colder place like Kashmir in winter or Europe in late autumn, swap two tops for thermals, add a warm coat that you wear on the plane, and pack gloves, a beanie and woollen socks. Vacuum compression bags reduce knit volume, but remember they do not reduce weight, so a medium suitcase can reach 23 kg more quickly than you expect.
Materials and features for a week-long check-in
Checked luggage gets thrown, stacked and dragged, so the shell matters. Polycarbonate offers a good balance of impact resistance and weight. Polypropylene is tough and light in premium lines. ABS is affordable but scratches and can crack. Ballistic nylon soft cases resist abrasion and are flexible, though they protect fragile items less well.
Important features include double spinner wheels, a telescopic handle that locks firmly at more than one height, a TSA-approved combination lock for US travel, compression straps inside both halves, and corner guards. An expansion zip of 3 to 5 cm is handy for the return leg. Check the warranty and whether the brand has service centres in India before buying.
A good test in the shop or on delivery is to extend the handle fully and wiggle it. A little play is normal, but excessive wobble means the bag will be tiring to push across long terminals. Spin the wheels on a hard floor and listen; smooth, quiet wheels usually indicate better bearings that last longer on rough Indian pavements.
Interior organisation also matters for a week away. A zipped divider on one side and a mesh panel on the other keeps the two halves tidy, while compression straps stop clothes shifting when the bag is tipped on its side at the baggage belt. Small interior pockets for chargers and jewellery are worth more than flashy exterior details.
Packing techniques that make a week fit
Roll T-shirts, jeans and casual dresses; fold blazers and structured shirts flat. Packing cubes keep categories separate and make hotel unpacking quick: tops in one, bottoms in another, innerwear and sleepwear in a third. Shoes go in shoe bags along the wheel end of the suitcase, which is the heaviest end when the bag stands upright.
Fill shoes with socks or chargers to use dead space. Keep liquids in a zipped, leak-proof pouch near the top so they are not crushed. Put heavier items near the wheels and lighter ones near the handle, which makes the suitcase stable when rolling. Leave around 10 percent free space for shopping, or rely on the expansion zip and the foldable duffle.
Mistakes to avoid on a seven-day trip
Common mistakes include packing a separate outfit for every single day with no repeats, bringing four or more pairs of shoes, and carrying full-size toiletries. Another is forgetting to weigh the bag at home. A simple handheld luggage scale costs little and saves you from repacking on the airport floor or paying excess baggage fees.
Many travellers also forget their personal item strategy. Keep one complete change of clothes, medicines, chargers and documents in the cabin. If your checked suitcase is delayed, you can still enjoy the first day. Finally, do not choose a bright white or pastel glossy suitcase if scuffs bother you; textured dark shells age more gracefully.
Seven-day trips with internal travel
Many week-long holidays include internal legs: a Rajasthan circuit by road, a Kerala trip combining trains and houseboats, or a Europe week with budget flights between cities. Every leg adds handling and new luggage rules. Budget airlines in Europe and Southeast Asia often have stricter cabin limits than international full-service carriers, so check each ticket separately.
For trips with a lot of moving around, two smaller bags are often better than one large one. A medium check-in suitcase stays with the main luggage, while a weekender or duffle carries two days of clothes for nights where you stay somewhere small, such as a houseboat or a desert camp. This avoids hauling your biggest bag onto boats and into tents.
Mark each bag clearly with a name tag and a distinctive strap. When luggage passes through more hands, small identifiers save time at belts, hotel lobbies and taxi stands. A Bluetooth tracker inside the suitcase gives extra reassurance on complicated itineraries.
Buying a suitcase you will use for years
A medium suitcase is the workhorse of most women's luggage collections. Brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Delsey, Tumi, Mokobara, Nasher Miles, VIP and Safari offer options from about ₹5,000 to well above ₹40,000. Higher prices generally buy better wheels, lighter yet stronger shells, superior zips and longer warranties.
