T-Shirt Knit Fabrics: Jersey, Rib, Pique, Waffle & Slub

Knits explained in brief

T-shirt knit fabrics differ in how the yarn loops are arranged. Single jersey is the classic smooth, light tee fabric; interlock is a thicker, double-faced version; rib has vertical ridges and lots of stretch; pique has a textured honeycomb surface; waffle has a grid texture; and slub has deliberate thick and thin spots. Each changes how a tee feels, drapes and breathes.

Fibre tells you what the tee is made of, such as cotton or modal. Knit tells you how it was constructed. Two tees in 100 percent cotton can feel completely different because of their knit, which is why understanding knits makes you a smarter shopper.

Most product listings do not name the knit, but photos and descriptions give clues. Words like ribbed, textured, waffle, pique or slub tell you the knit type, and if nothing is mentioned, the tee is most likely single jersey.

Single jersey: the everyday tee

Single jersey is knitted with one set of needles, giving a smooth face with flat V-shaped stitches and a slightly loopy back. Most basic tees are single jersey.

It is light, breathable and drapes well, which makes it perfect for Indian summers. It also takes prints cleanly, so most graphic tees use it.

The downsides: edges curl when cut, it can twist if cut off-grain and thin versions can be see-through. Look for 160 to 200 GSM combed cotton jersey for a reliable everyday tee.

Single jersey also comes in different gauges. Fine-gauge jersey feels smooth and silky, while coarser gauges feel more casual. Premium basics often use a fine gauge for a sleek finish.

Single jersey vs interlock

Interlock is knitted with two sets of needles, producing a fabric that looks smooth on both sides. It is thicker, softer and more stable than single jersey, with less curling and twisting.

Interlock feels a little cushioned and has a slightly heavier drape, which flatters fitted tees and smart basics. It is also used for kids' wear and premium tees because it is gentle and durable.

In summer, single jersey breathes better. In air-conditioned offices or cooler months, interlock tees look more polished and hold their shape under blazers.

Rib knit has alternating raised and lowered vertical columns, creating visible ridges. Common types are 1x1 rib, with fine ridges, and 2x2 rib, with wider ones.

Pique: the polo fabric

Pique has a raised, textured pattern, often like small honeycombs or diamonds. It is the classic fabric for polo tees.

The texture creates tiny air pockets, so pique breathes well and does not cling, which makes it comfortable in humid weather. It also hides minor creases and sweat marks better than smooth jersey.

Pique has a sporty, preppy feel. Pair a pique polo with a pleated tennis skirt and sneakers or with straight chinos and loafers for a smart weekend look.

Pique is a good choice for women who sweat more, because the textured surface keeps fabric slightly away from the skin and hides damp patches better than smooth jersey.

Waffle and thermal knits

Waffle knit features a grid of small squares, like a waffle. The raised texture traps air, giving a bit of warmth without much weight.

Waffle knits can stretch when hung wet, so dry them flat. They also catch on jewellery and bag zips, so take care.

Slub cotton and French terry

Neither is a flaw: slub's irregularity and terry's loops are design features. Slub is airy and textured; terry is cosy and structured.

Slub cotton is especially flattering for relaxed, oversized silhouettes, because its texture adds interest without prints. French terry tees work well with tailored bottoms for an elevated athleisure look.

Both are easy to care for. Wash slub cold to keep its texture, and dry French terry flat or folded over a line to keep it from stretching.

How to identify a knit by touch

Single jersey: smooth on the front, slightly loopy on the back, thin and light. Stretch it sideways and it extends easily; stretch it lengthwise and it barely moves.

Interlock: smooth on both sides, thicker and more cushioned. It does not curl at the edges and feels denser in the hand.

Rib: visible vertical lines, very stretchy sideways and springs back strongly. Pique and waffle: clearly textured surfaces you can feel with your fingertips.

Slub: uneven thickness you can see when you hold it to the light. French terry: smooth front with small loops on the back, heavier and absorbent.

Care differs by knit. Single jersey and rib are easy everyday washes; waffle and French terry should be dried flat; pique and slub should be washed cold to preserve their texture. Turn all textured knits inside out to reduce snagging.

If you are building a capsule wardrobe, add texture through knits rather than prints. A rib tank, a waffle henley and a pique polo look varied even in the same neutral colour.

Which knit suits which situation

Peak summer: lightweight single jersey or slub cotton. Humid monsoon: pique or slub, which do not cling. Office: interlock or mid-weight jersey under blazers. College and dates: rib knit crop or baby tees with high-waisted bottoms.

Winter and travel: waffle or interlock as layering pieces. Loungewear and airport outfits: French terry tees or soft interlock.
