What to pack for an offsite

Outfits for sessions

Strategy sessions at offsites are usually smart casual. Tailored trousers or relaxed chinos with a neat shirt, a knit polo or a cotton kurta work well. A co-ord set is comfortable for long sessions and looks polished. Conference rooms at resorts are often cold, so carry a light jacket or cardigan.

If senior leaders or external speakers attend, dress slightly smarter on day one. A shirt dress with sneakers or loafers strikes the right tone.

Avoid anything too tight or short for sitting on low sofas and floor cushions, which are common in breakout sessions.

Activities and outdoor gear

Team-building activities can range from cricket and kayaking to treks and cooking challenges. Pack comfortable activewear: leggings or joggers, breathable T-shirts, a sports bra, a light windcheater and sneakers with good grip. A cap and sunglasses protect you in the sun.

For water activities, a swimsuit, a cover-up and flip-flops. For hill or forest treks, closed shoes and insect repellent. In monsoon, a quick-dry jacket.

Pack a small dry bag for your phone if there is any water activity.

Group activities can get messy. Treasure hunts in mud, colour runs and cooking challenges can ruin clothes, so pack one old T-shirt and leggings you do not mind sacrificing.

Evening looks

Most offsites include a dinner, a bonfire night or a themed party. A midi dress, a jumpsuit or a festive kurta set covers most themes. Add statement earrings and comfortable block heels or embellished flats.

Themed nights such as Bollywood, retro or all-white are common. Ask organisers early and pack accessories that transform a base outfit rather than buying a full costume.

Keep evening wear wrinkle-resistant; resort rooms rarely have quick pressing.

For themed nights, a simple trick is to pack a base outfit in black or white and add theme-specific accessories, such as a sequinned scarf for a retro night, a bright dupatta for a Bollywood night or a floral clip for a garden party. Accessories take far less space than a full costume.

If there is a party or dance night, comfortable shoes matter. Block heels or embellished flats let you dance on grass, sand or terrace floors without sinking or slipping.

Toiletries and wellness

Pack sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm, after-sun gel, a basic first-aid kit with plasters and antacids, and any personal medicines. Resorts provide shampoo and body wash, but carry your own skincare.

A reusable water bottle and electrolyte sachets help during outdoor activities. A travel pillow or eye mask helps on coach rides.

Bring a small laundry pouch for sweaty activewear.

Resorts in hill stations and forests often have mosquitoes, especially in the evenings and after rain. A repellent spray or roll-on, long-sleeved layers for the evenings and an antihistamine in your first-aid kit are worth carrying.

If you have dietary needs or allergies, let organisers know in advance and carry a few snacks in case the menu is limited.

Work essentials

Even at a relaxed offsite, you need your laptop, charger, notebook, pen and perhaps a presentation. Pack them in a laptop sleeve inside your duffle or a light tote.

A power bank and a short cable are essential, as resort rooms may have few sockets near the bed.

If you are presenting, test the venue's projector setup early.

Keep the laptop away from water and sand. A padded sleeve with a zip, inside the duffle, protects it during coach rides and beach days.

Packing by destination

Goa offsites usually mean beach resorts, humidity and at least one evening by the sea. Pack breathable cotton and linen-look viscose for sessions, a swimsuit and cover-up, flat sandals, sunscreen and a light shawl for breezy dinners. A water-resistant duffle copes with sand and the occasional shower, and a straw or canvas tote works as a day bag. If your offsite falls in the monsoon, expect heavy rain and choose quick-dry fabrics and closed sandals.

Rajasthan offsites at heritage properties in Jaipur, Udaipur or Jodhpur call for slightly dressier evenings. A printed kurta set, a block-print maxi or a silk-blend dress suits palace dinners. Days are hot for much of the year and nights in winter are cool, so pack a light jacket between November and February. Comfortable shoes matter here, as heritage hotels often involve long corridors, courtyards and stairs.

Hill-station offsites in places like Lonavala, Mussoorie, Coorg or Rishikesh need layers, closed shoes with grip and insect repellent. Mornings can be cool even in summer, and activities might include treks, river rafting or nature walks. A backpack is more practical than a tote for the day, and a duffle handles the coach ride and gravel paths better than a spinner.
