Thailand trip luggage: what works
For a Thailand trip covering Bangkok and one or two islands, the best luggage is a medium soft duffle or a 60 to 65 cm spinner plus a small backpack. Ferries, speedboats and longtail boats in Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui are far easier with bags you can lift and carry over a short pier.
Thailand is a favourite short-haul destination from India, with flights of around three to five hours from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and southern cities. Many travellers fly low-cost carriers where checked baggage is optional and cabin limits are strict, so your luggage choice and your fare type need to work together.
Pack light, quick-drying beach and city clothes, one modest outfit for temples and a pair of sandals you can take on and off easily. Leave space for night-market shopping in Bangkok and Phuket.
A useful rule for Thailand is to pack for five days even if you are staying ten. Laundry services near tourist areas are inexpensive and quick, often returning clothes the same or next day, so carrying a fortnight of outfits through ferries and airports is unnecessary. The weight you save becomes room for market finds.

Duffle or spinner for island hopping?
Island transfers often involve carrying luggage down a pier, handing it to a boat crew, and lifting it onto sand or a jetty. Spinner wheels are useless on sand, and hard shells can be awkward when stacked on small boats. A sturdy 50 to 70 litre duffle with shoulder strap, or a wheeled duffle, handles this best.
If you are staying in Bangkok and one resort in Phuket with car transfers, a medium spinner is perfectly fine and keeps clothes neater. Choose polycarbonate with good wheels, since Bangkok pavements are uneven and kerbs are high.
Water resistance matters either way. Speedboat spray and tropical rain can soak a canvas bag; choose coated nylon or a hard shell, and pack electronics in a dry bag inside.
Another option is a hybrid: a wheeled duffle that rolls through Suvarnabhumi and Bangkok hotels but has backpack straps or a sturdy shoulder strap for the pier. These bags combine the convenience of wheels with the flexibility of soft luggage, and they compress neatly in the narrow luggage racks at the back of minivans used for island transfers.
Whichever bag you choose, a bright luggage strap or ribbon helps when boat crews pile dozens of similar bags on a jetty, and a tag with your hotel name lets transfer staff deliver it to the right resort if you are separated from it.
Thailand packing list for women
Pack four to five breathable tops, two pairs of shorts, one pair of light trousers or a maxi skirt for temples, two or three sundresses, a co-ord set, two swimsuits, a beach cover-up and sleepwear. Linen, cotton and viscose dry fast in humid weather and wash easily in a hotel sink.
Footwear: one pair of slip-on sandals, one pair of sneakers for walking days, and flip-flops for the beach. Add a sun hat, sunglasses, a reef-friendly sunscreen, insect repellent and an after-sun gel. A light rain jacket or a compact umbrella helps during the monsoon months.
For nights out in Bangkok rooftop bars or beach clubs in Phuket, one slip dress and a pair of dressy flats or wedges is enough. Night markets are casual and crowded; keep shoes comfortable.
Hand-washing is easy in Thailand's heat, so choose pieces that dry overnight. Avoid heavy denim; it takes days to dry in humid air and weighs a lot. A pair of light cotton trousers or palazzos does the job of jeans while staying cool, and they double as temple-appropriate clothing.
Temple dress code and what to carry
The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun in Bangkok, and temples across the country, expect visitors to cover shoulders and knees. Shorts, short skirts and sleeveless tops may mean you are turned away or asked to rent a cover. Pack loose trousers or a maxi skirt and a scarf or shirt to throw over a sleeveless top.
You will remove shoes before entering temple buildings, so slip-on sandals save time. Carry a small crossbody with a zip, not a backpack, as some halls are crowded and you will want your bag in front of you.
A light stole is the most versatile Thai travel item: temple cover-up, sun shade, airplane blanket and beach sarong in one.
At the Grand Palace in particular, staff check clothing carefully at the entrance, and the queue is long under strong sun. Arriving correctly dressed saves time and the cost of renting cover-ups. Light cotton palazzos with a loose shirt are cool enough for the heat and fully acceptable.
Beach day bag essentials
A woven or canvas tote is ideal for beach days in Krabi, Phi Phi or Koh Samui. Pack a quick-dry towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, a water bottle, a waterproof phone pouch and a small cash wallet. Many beach vendors and boat operators prefer cash.
For snorkelling day trips, a dry bag of 10 to 20 litres keeps your phone, towel and change of clothes dry on the boat. Leave valuables in the hotel safe.
Avoid leather bags at the beach; sand, salt water and sunscreen damage leather quickly. Keep your leather handbag for Bangkok malls and dinners.
For Phi Phi and the Krabi islands, longtail boats drop you at beaches where you step straight into knee-deep water. Keep footwear simple, sandals with straps that will not float away, and tie your dry bag to your wrist or the boat when you are not holding it.
Low-cost airline baggage tips
If you fly a low-cost fare to Thailand or within Thailand, cabin baggage is often limited to about 7 kg with strict dimensions, and checked bags are paid extras. Buying checked baggage online at booking is usually far cheaper than paying at the airport.
Domestic flights within Thailand, for example Bangkok to Phuket or Chiang Mai, may have lower allowances than your international flight. Plan your packing to the stricter limit, not the generous one.
Weigh your bags at home with a portable luggage scale and keep a foldable tote for overflow, which you can carry or check in on the return if you buy extra baggage.
Liquids rules apply on Thai domestic flights too. Buy full-size sunscreen and toiletries after arrival at a local pharmacy or convenience store if your fare is cabin-only, rather than trying to squeeze everything into 100 ml bottles for the whole trip.
Shopping hauls from Bangkok
Bangkok's markets and malls, Chatuchak, Platinum Fashion Mall, MBK and Siam Paragon, are irresistible. Leave at least a quarter of your suitcase empty, or pack a foldable duffle for the return. Clothes and accessories pack flat; ceramics and spices need padding in the centre of the case.
Keep invoices for higher-value items and review Indian customs allowances before your flight home. Electronics and jewellery belong in cabin baggage.
If you buy a lot, use vacuum or compression bags for clothing to reclaim space, but be mindful of weight; compression saves volume, not kilos.
Fake designer goods are commonly sold in some markets. Bringing counterfeit products back can create problems at customs, and quality is unreliable, so focus your Bangkok shopping on local fashion labels, handicrafts, silk, homeware and beauty products that are genuine and well-priced.
Choosing quality luggage for Thailand
For Thailand, prioritise water resistance, carrying comfort and low empty weight. A wheeled duffle or a soft spinner from brands like Samsonite, American Tourister, Skybags or Safari works well, with good mid-range options from around ₹5,000 upward.
If you already own a hard-shell spinner, pair it with a 30 to 40 litre soft duffle for island legs and leave the spinner at your Bangkok hotel's luggage storage if you return there.
Explore our luxury travel bags for duffles and spinners, and pick a beach tote and crossbody to complete your Thailand kit.
If you travel to Thailand often, keep a dedicated beach kit packed between trips: swimsuits, a dry bag, a sarong, reef-friendly sunscreen and a waterproof pouch, all stored inside your duffle. It turns the next trip into a twenty-minute packing job and stops you overbuying duplicates before every holiday.
