Train travel luggage in India: the essentials
The best train travel luggage in India is a soft or slim suitcase that fits under a lower berth, a small chain lock to secure it, and a compact tote or sling for valuables that stays with you. Indian Railways sets free luggage allowances that vary by class, and anything over must be booked separately, so packing sensibly is both practical and economical.
Trains remain one of the most loved ways to travel in India: overnight Rajdhanis between Delhi and Mumbai, the Duronto to Kolkata, scenic Konkan Railway runs to Goa, and Vande Bharat day trips. Women travelling alone or with family need luggage that fits tight spaces, stays secure overnight and is easy to lift onto high racks or into coaches with steep steps.
Unlike airports, there are no conveyor belts or porters on every platform. You will lift, carry and stow your own bags far more often.
Families with children, older parents travelling to a wedding, and young professionals moving between cities for work all rely on trains. Each group has different luggage needs, but the same principles apply: bags must be easy to lift, fit tight spaces and stay secure when you are asleep or away from your seat.

Indian Railways luggage allowance by class
Indian Railways publishes free luggage allowances by class, and generally more generous allowances apply to higher classes such as AC First. Allowances for AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, sleeper and chair car are lower. There are also limits on the size of trunks and suitcases carried inside compartments. Rules change, so check the current allowances on the official Indian Railways or IRCTC website before travel.
Excess luggage beyond the free allowance can be booked in the brake van at the parcel office, usually before departure. Carrying excess luggage unbooked can attract penalties if checked. For most leisure trips, a single medium bag per person stays comfortably within limits.
Which bags work best on trains
Soft suitcases and duffles are the most train-friendly luggage. They squeeze under lower berths, fit on narrow luggage racks and do not crack when stacked. A 55 to 65 cm soft trolley with two sturdy wheels handles platform surfaces better than four small spinner wheels, which catch on cracks and drains.
Hard shells work if they are slim. A 55 cm cabin hard shell usually slides under a berth. Larger 68 to 75 cm hard shells often do not and end up blocking aisles, which co-passengers and attendants will not appreciate.
For short day journeys in chair car, a weekender or cabin trolley is enough, stored in the overhead rack.
Duffles are a strong choice for women who travel by train often. A 50 to 60 litre duffle with a flat base, sturdy handles and a detachable shoulder strap fits under berths, sits neatly on racks and can be carried up the steps of high coaches. Choose water-resistant nylon, which copes with dusty platforms and monsoon puddles better than leather.
AC 2-tier, 3-tier and First Class: space differences
In AC First, coupes and cabins have more floor and under-seat space, and the door locks, which makes larger bags more manageable. AC 2-tier has berths along the side and in bays, with under-berth space beneath the lower berths, shared between passengers. AC 3-tier has more passengers per bay, so space is tighter, and the middle berth limits how high bags can be stacked.
In sleeper class, space is shared among even more passengers. Keep luggage compact and avoid rigid cases. In all classes, the lower berth passenger usually gets first access to under-berth space, so if you have a large bag, booking a lower berth can help.
Side berths have limited storage. If you are on a side lower, a slim bag under it or a small bag at your feet works best.
If you are booking for an older parent or someone with limited mobility, request a lower berth and choose luggage with wheels and a top handle. Lower berths give direct access to under-berth space, making it easier to reach medicines or a shawl in the night without climbing.
Security on overnight trains
Overnight journeys are where security matters most. Carry a sturdy chain lock and secure your suitcase to the berth frame or loop under the seat. Keep valuables such as jewellery, cash, cards and phone in a small crossbody bag that you keep near your pillow or wear while sleeping.
Do not keep your purse in an outer suitcase pocket. Choose luggage with lockable zips and a TSA-style combination lock, which deters casual tampering. Women travelling alone may prefer the upper berth for privacy, keeping a small bag with them and the main luggage chained below.
Note your coach and berth number and the train's helpline, and keep your phone charged with a power bank.
For family trips, distribute luggage across the bay. Each lower berth's under-space can hold a bag, while children's small backpacks go on the berth or at the foot end. Use one chain to secure two bags together if they share a space. A brightly coloured strap or tag on each bag reduces confusion when everyone gets off at a busy junction at dawn.
What to carry in your train cabin bag
A small tote or backpack keeps everything you need on the journey within reach: water, snacks, a shawl or light blanket, slippers, wet wipes, a hand sanitiser, tissues, an eye mask, earplugs, a power bank, medicines, and a change of comfortable clothes for overnight trips.
Bedding is provided in AC classes, but many women prefer a thin cotton sheet or a travel pillowcase. In sleeper class, carry your own sheet or blanket. A small toiletry kit with toothbrush, face wash and moisturiser helps you freshen up before arrival.
Keep tickets, ID and a printout or screenshot of the PNR in an easy-access pocket for the ticket examiner.
For chair car journeys on Shatabdi or Vande Bharat trains, the in-seat bag can be smaller: water, a light layer, a phone, a charger and a book. Most of these trains have charging points at the seats, but carrying a power bank is still wise. A structured tote works well here, because it sits neatly on your lap or under the seat in front and looks polished if you are going straight to a meeting.
Keep a few small notes and coins for tea and snacks from vendors, so you are not opening your main wallet repeatedly in a crowded coach.
Lifting, platforms and practical handling
Platforms can be crowded and uneven, and coach doors are high, with steep steps. Choose luggage you can lift alone. A good test is whether you can hold your packed bag at waist height for a few seconds. If not, it is too heavy for train travel without help.
Two moderate bags are easier than one heavy one. Wheeled bags with sturdy, recessed wheels and a strong telescopic handle cope better with rough platforms. Licensed porters are available at major stations; agree on the rate before they lift your bags.
Arrive early so you can board without rushing, especially at major junctions where trains halt briefly.
Coolies or porters at large stations such as New Delhi, Mumbai CSMT, Howrah and Chennai Central carry heavy bags efficiently, and many stations now have escalators, lifts and battery cars for elderly passengers. Check station facilities in advance if you are travelling with older family members. Trolleys with sturdy two-wheel systems remain the easiest for crossing foot overbridges with steps, since you can drag them one step at a time.
Train luggage mistakes to avoid
Carrying oversized hard shells that do not fit under berths, using flimsy bags that tear when dragged, and leaving valuables in outer pockets are the classic mistakes. Others include not carrying a chain lock, overpacking beyond the free allowance, and stuffing food in suitcases where it can spoil or attract pests.
Do not block aisles or doorways with luggage; it is unsafe and causes friction with co-passengers. Also avoid pale fabric bags on trains; platforms and floors can be dusty or wet during monsoons.
Finally, double-check your berth area before getting off. Small bags and chargers are easily forgotten in the dark.
Choose train-ready luggage
The best train luggage is soft or slim, lockable, easy to lift and durable enough for platforms. A slim trolley, a sturdy duffle and a secure crossbody bag together cover most journeys.
