Travel medicine kit checklist: the core
A good travel medicine kit checklist covers your regular prescriptions with a few extra days' supply, a pain and fever reliever, an antacid, oral rehydration salts, an antihistamine, motion sickness tablets, plasters, antiseptic, a thermometer and any medicines your doctor recommends for your destination. Pack it in a compact, clearly organised pouch in your cabin bag, with prescriptions and doctor's notes alongside.
Exact medicines and doses should come from your doctor or pharmacist, especially for children, pregnancy and existing conditions. This guide focuses on what categories to cover and how to carry them.
A well-prepared kit saves you from searching for a pharmacy at midnight in an unfamiliar city or on a remote beach.
It also helps you handle the small problems that so often spoil a trip: an upset stomach, a headache or a blister.
Building the kit once and restocking it after every trip is far easier than starting from scratch each time. Keep a printed checklist inside the pouch itself, tick items off as you pack and note anything that ran out so you can replace it before the next journey.

Prescriptions and regular medicines
Pack your regular prescription medicines in their original packaging with labels, plus a few days' extra in case of delays. Carry a copy of the prescription and a note from your doctor listing medicines and dosages, especially for international travel.
Some medicines that are common in India may be controlled or restricted in other countries. Check the rules for your destination's embassy or official health guidance before you fly, particularly for strong painkillers, sleeping tablets and some psychiatric medicines.
Keep medicines in your cabin bag, never only in checked luggage. If your suitcase is delayed, you will still have what you need.
For long trips, split your supply between two bags.
Think of the kit in layers. The first layer is what you take every day. The second is what fixes the most common travel problems. The third is first aid for minor injuries. Building the kit this way keeps it compact and makes sure nothing important is forgotten.
Stomach and hydration
Travellers' stomach upsets are among the most common trip problems, from street food in Delhi to buffet breakfasts in Bangkok. Pack oral rehydration salts, which are light and invaluable. Ask your doctor about suitable medicines for acidity, diarrhoea and nausea.
Carry a reusable bottle and drink sealed or filtered water. Hand sanitiser and wet wipes help when washing facilities are limited.
Probiotics and simple snacks such as biscuits help settle a stomach on long journeys.
For trekking and high-altitude trips to Ladakh or Sikkim, ask your doctor about altitude advice before you go.
Write down the generic names of your medicines as well as brand names. Brands differ between countries, and a pharmacist abroad will find it much easier to help if you can show the active ingredient and dose.
Pain, fever, allergy and colds
A pain and fever reliever is the backbone of any kit. Add an antihistamine for allergies and insect bites, throat lozenges, a saline nasal spray and a small tube of antiseptic cream.
A compact digital thermometer is helpful, especially when travelling with children or elderly parents.
Motion sickness tablets or bands help on winding hill roads to Shimla, Munnar or Darjeeling, on ferries in the Andamans and on small aircraft.
Pack a mild cold remedy and a few sachets of electrolyte drink for recovery.
Pack a few more doses of stomach remedies than you think you need on longer trips. Travel companions often run out of their own supplies, and being able to share can save a day of an itinerary.
Eye drops for dry, air-conditioned cabins and a small tube of moisturising cream for cracked lips and hands are small additions that make long journeys much more comfortable.
First aid basics
Include assorted plasters, blister plasters, sterile gauze, medical tape, a small crepe bandage, antiseptic wipes and tweezers. Blister plasters are particularly valuable on city sightseeing trips where you walk for hours in new shoes.
Add insect repellent for the tropics and monsoon, sunscreen and after-sun gel for beach holidays, and lip balm with SPF.
Small scissors are useful but may not be allowed in cabin bags; check your airline's rules or pack them in checked luggage.
For women, include sanitary supplies and any period pain relief you usually use.
Heat is a real concern on Indian summer trips. Pack sachets of electrolyte powder, a cooling face mist and a cap or scarf for long outdoor days at forts and temples, and recognise early signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness and headache.
Choosing the right medicine pouch
A dedicated medicine pouch keeps everything visible and separate from toiletries and makeup. Look for clear or mesh compartments, elastic loops for blister packs and a zipped section for documents.
Choose a water-resistant fabric and a size that fits your cabin bag, typically around 20 x 15 cm for a personal kit and larger for a family kit. A bright colour or red cross symbol makes it easy to find in an emergency.
Some premium travel organisers include a medicine compartment within a toiletry bag or vanity case, which is convenient for short trips.
Keep the pouch near the top of your cabin bag.
Check expiry dates before every trip. It is easy to carry a kit for years without noticing that half its contents have expired, particularly creams and liquid medicines that degrade faster in heat.
Carrying medicines on flights
Solid tablets in blister packs usually pass through security without issue. Liquid medicines, gels and inhalers may be permitted in larger quantities than the standard liquid limit if they are needed during the flight, but you may need to declare them at security and show a prescription. Check your airline's and airport's rules before travel.
Insulin, injectables and syringes generally require a doctor's letter and should be kept in the cabin. Ask your airline about cooling options for temperature-sensitive medicines.
Keep medicines in their original packaging so security staff can identify them.
Carry a printed list of your medicines and allergies in case of emergencies abroad.
Temperature affects medicines. Some should not be exposed to the heat of a parked car or the cold of a checked hold, so keep the pouch in your cabin bag and away from direct sunlight at your destination.
At security, place the medicine pouch in the tray on top of your clear liquids bag if it contains liquids, so officers can see both quickly and you can repack in seconds.
Family and special needs kits
For children, ask your paediatrician for age-appropriate medicines and doses, and pack a thermometer, ORS, plasters and a favourite comfort item.
For elderly parents, carry a clear list of their medicines, doctor's contacts and medical history, and check travel insurance coverage for pre-existing conditions.
For pregnancy, consult your doctor before travel and pack any medicines and supplements they advise.
Keep each person's kit in a separate pouch labelled with their name.
If you are travelling for a wedding, keep a small kit in your clutch for the evening: a pain reliever, an antacid, plasters for new shoes and safety pins. These solve most problems that arise during long functions.
For family trips, a single shared kit for common items plus small personal pouches for each person's prescriptions keeps luggage light while ensuring everyone has their own essentials within reach. Label the shared kit clearly so any adult can find it at night.
Final checklist
Prescriptions with extra supply and paperwork, pain and fever relief, stomach and hydration support, allergy relief, motion sickness remedies, first aid basics, sun and insect protection, a thermometer, sanitary supplies and a clear, labelled pouch in your cabin bag.
Check your destination's medicine rules, confirm your airline's policies and consult your doctor before long or international trips.
With your kit ready, you can travel with confidence wherever the road takes you.
Store your travel insurance details and emergency numbers with the kit, so everything you need in a medical situation is in one place.
