Travelling With a Baby: Luggage Checklist for 2026

Published by the Style Desk

Travelling with a baby luggage checklist: the cabin bag, nappy kit, suitcase size, stroller and car seat rules to check, and how to pack for a first flight.

Your travelling with a baby luggage checklist, at a glance

A good travelling with a baby luggage checklist has four parts: a nappy bag or backpack you can reach at any moment, a cabin spinner holding a full day of supplies for both of you, one checked suitcase for everything else, and the baby's own equipment, usually a foldable stroller and possibly a car seat. Keep the bag count that low and you will always have at least one free hand for your little one.

The golden rule is to pack for delays, not for the schedule. A two-hour flight can easily become a six-hour day once you add the drive, check-in, a delay and baggage reclaim. Babies do not care about timetables, so everything needed for feeding, changing, soothing and sleeping must stay in the cabin with you, with enough for at least twice the journey time.

The nappy bag: your most important piece

A backpack-style nappy bag is the favourite among travelling parents because it leaves both arms free for carrying the baby, folding the stroller and handling boarding passes. Look for a wide opening that shows everything at once, insulated bottle pockets, a wipe-clean lining and a separate zipped section for your own phone, wallet and passports.

If you prefer a shoulder style, a large structured tote with an inner organiser can work, though it tends to slip when you bend over a changing table. Whatever you choose, attach a small pouch on the outside for the items you reach for most: wipes, a pacifier, a muslin cloth and hand sanitiser. Being able to grab these without unzipping the main bag saves you a dozen awkward moments on a flight.

Size matters too. A nappy bag of around 20 to 25 litres holds a day's supplies without becoming a second suitcase, and it usually slides under the seat in front of you, which means it stays within reach during take-off and landing when the overhead bins are closed. Check whether your airline counts it as your personal item or allows it in addition to the cabin bag when travelling with an infant; policies differ, and knowing in advance avoids a stressful repack at the gate. A bag with a trolley sleeve on the back can also slide over the handle of your cabin spinner, so you push both with one hand while the other holds the baby.

What goes in the nappy bag

Nappies: one for every two hours of total travel time plus four spare. Wipes, a travel changing mat, nappy cream, and several disposable bags for dirty nappies and soiled clothes. Feeding: formula pre-measured in a dispenser or breast pump parts, bottles, a flask of hot water, a bib, a spoon and baby food pouches if your little one is on solids. Most airports allow reasonable quantities of baby food and milk through security, but check the rules for your departure airport and expect extra screening.

Comfort and health: a favourite toy, a lightweight blanket, two pacifiers, saline drops, a thermometer, paracetamol syrup suitable for the baby's age as advised by your paediatrician, and any prescribed medicine. Clothing: two complete changes for the baby and one top for you. Spit-ups and leaks rarely happen at a convenient moment, and a spare shirt is worth its weight in gold on a long-haul flight.

Choosing the cabin spinner and suitcase

The cabin spinner backs up the nappy bag. Fill it with a day's worth of extra nappies, formula and food, more clothes for the baby, your own toiletries and sleepwear, and documents. A soft-front cabin trolley with an outer pocket is handy because you can pull out a sleepsuit without opening the whole case on the airport floor. Pick one that is light to lift, ideally under three kilos empty, since you may be lifting it into an overhead bin one-handed.

For the checked bag, a medium 65 to 68 cm polycarbonate spinner usually holds a week of clothes for parents plus baby. Babies' clothes are tiny, but their gear is bulky: bath tub inserts, sterilisers, swaddles, a travel cot sheet and a bulk pack of nappies for the first days if you are unsure about local brands. Packing cubes by category, baby clothes, feeding, bedding, keep the case organised when you are tired and unpacking at midnight.

Strollers, car seats and baby carriers

Many airlines allow a foldable stroller to be used up to the aircraft door and returned at the gate or at baggage reclaim, often free of charge, and some also accept car seats as checked items. Policies vary widely by airline, route and fare, so always confirm with your airline before travelling rather than assuming. A compact, one-hand-fold stroller makes security and boarding far easier than a full-size pram.

A soft baby carrier or sling is the secret weapon of seasoned parents. It keeps the baby close and calm in queues and during boarding, and it frees both hands for bags. For car journeys at your destination, find out in advance whether taxis or rental cars can provide a car seat; if not, a lightweight travel car seat may be worth bringing. Protect the stroller in a padded travel bag so it does not arrive with a bent frame.

On the plane: smart organisation

Before boarding, move the next few hours of essentials into the outer pocket of the nappy bag: two nappies, a small pack of wipes, a bottle or feeding cover, a pacifier and a toy. Keep this bag at your feet and the cabin spinner overhead. Feeding or offering a pacifier during take-off and landing can help babies with ear pressure.

Ask about bassinet seats when booking long-haul flights, because many international carriers offer them on certain rows for babies under a particular weight or age. On domestic routes like Mumbai to Delhi or Bengaluru to Kolkata, flights are short enough that a carrier and a good feeding plan usually do the job. Dress the baby in layers; cabin temperatures swing from warm at the gate to chilly at cruising altitude.

A packing list for your own needs

Parents often pack beautifully for the baby and forget themselves. Your list: comfortable stretchy clothes that are easy to feed in, a nursing-friendly top if relevant, a light cardigan or jacket, slip-on shoes or sneakers that you can get into without bending, a scarf that doubles as a feeding cover, your medicines, phone charger and a small toiletry pouch with face wipes and lip balm.

Keep your own items in one zipped section of the nappy bag or in a slim sling bag worn across your body. That way your phone, cards and passports are always on you, not buried under muslins. A watch helps you keep track of feeds without unlocking your phone a hundred times.

Mistakes new parents commonly make

Packing formula and nappies only in the checked bag, bringing a full-size pram that will not fold at the gate, forgetting a change of clothes for yourself and carrying three different bags on your shoulders are the classic errors. Another is overpacking toys; one or two new small toys and a familiar comfort item are usually enough for a baby.

Many parents also underestimate how much time airports take with a baby. Arrive early, use family lanes where offered and ask for help. Airline staff and fellow passengers are usually kind to parents who are organised and calm, and good luggage makes calm much easier.

Is premium luggage worth it with a baby?

For the nappy bag, durability matters more than labels: thick, wipe-clean fabric, strong zips and padded straps. For the suitcase, premium lines from brands like Samsonite, Delsey, American Tourister and Mokobara, typically from about ₹7,000 to ₹18,000, bring smoother wheels you can push one-handed while holding a baby, sturdier handles and warranties that cover the scuffs of family travel.

Spend where you feel the difference: the bag you push and the bag you carry. The rest of the trip is about patience, snacks and a lot of cuddles. With a well-planned luggage set-up, travelling with a baby becomes not just manageable but genuinely enjoyable, and the first trip makes every later one easier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price range of travelling with baby luggage checklist?+

Our top 20 picks range from ₹299 to ₹21,938 on Amazon.in.

How many nappies should I pack for a flight with a baby?+

A useful rule is one nappy for every two hours of total travel time, counting from leaving home to arriving at your stay, plus about four spare for delays. Keep all of them in your cabin bag and nappy bag, never only in the checked suitcase.

Can I take baby food and milk through airport security?+

Most airports allow reasonable quantities of baby milk, formula, food and water for a baby beyond normal liquid limits, but they may need extra screening. Rules vary by country and airport, so check your departure airport's guidance before you travel and keep these items easy to take out.

Do airlines let me take a stroller to the gate?+

Many airlines allow a foldable stroller to be used up to the aircraft door and returned at the gate or baggage reclaim, but policies differ by airline and route. Confirm with your airline when booking and choose a compact one-hand-fold model to make this easier.

What is the best bag for travelling with a baby?+

A backpack-style nappy bag is usually best because it keeps both hands free, has bottle pockets and organises small items well. Pair it with a light cabin spinner for a day's backup supplies and one medium suitcase for the rest of the trip.

What should I pack for myself when flying with a baby?+

Pack a spare top, a light cardigan, a scarf that works as a feeding cover, your medicines, a phone charger and basic toiletries. Keep phone, cards and passports in a zipped section of the nappy bag or in a crossbody so they are always on you.
