Travelling with wedding jewellery: the golden rules
When travelling with wedding jewellery, always carry it in your cabin baggage or on your person, never in checked luggage. Pack each set in a padded, compartmentalised case, keep photographs and purchase records, use hotel safes at the destination and, for international flights, check the customs rules of both India and the destination country before you fly.
Wedding jewellery is often the most valuable thing a family owns, and in India it may include heirloom gold, kundan and polki sets, diamonds and temple jewellery. Destination weddings, NRI weddings and honeymoons all mean these pieces travel more than ever, sometimes across continents.
The good news is that a few disciplined habits dramatically reduce the risk. This guide covers packing, security screening, customs paperwork, hotel storage and what bags make the job easier.

Why jewellery never goes in checked luggage
Checked bags pass through many hands and can be delayed, misrouted or opened for inspection. Airlines typically limit their liability for valuables in checked baggage, and many airline conditions specifically exclude jewellery from compensation. That means a lost case could mean a loss with very little recourse.
Cabin baggage stays with you. Even if you are asked to gate-check a trolley on a full flight, you can remove a small jewellery case first. This is why many brides keep jewellery in a compact crossbody or a small padded case rather than deep inside a cabin trolley.
Travel insurance with valuables cover, or a home insurance policy with an all-risks extension, may provide protection. Read the terms carefully, since many policies require jewellery to be carried on your person to be covered.
How to pack jewellery for travel
Use a hard-sided or well-padded jewellery case with separate compartments for necklaces, earrings, rings and bangles. Wrap heavy necklaces individually in soft cloth or anti-tarnish pouches, fasten clasps to prevent tangles and lay them flat. Kundan and polki pieces are delicate, so avoid stacking anything heavy on top.
Earrings should be stored in pairs with backs attached or in a small labelled pouch. Bangles travel best on a bangle roll or in their original box. Pearls should never be in contact with hard metal and should be wrapped in silk or soft cotton. Add anti-tarnish strips for silver and a small silica gel sachet for humid destinations.
Organise by function. One pouch for mehendi, one for sangeet, one for the wedding and one for the reception makes dressing faster and reduces the chance of leaving a piece behind.
If you are carrying heirloom pieces, consider whether every one of them truly needs to travel. Some families choose to wear replicas or lighter sets at a destination wedding and keep the most precious heirlooms for the main ceremony at home or in a bank locker. Reducing what travels is the simplest way to reduce risk.
Airport security screening
Jewellery passes through X-ray screening along with your cabin bag. It is normal for security staff to ask to see it if they notice dense metal objects. Keeping everything in one organised case makes inspection quick and avoids pieces spilling into trays.
Some travellers prefer to wear key pieces, such as a mangalsutra or bangles, through security. This is usually fine but may trigger metal detectors, so be ready for a pat-down. Do not put jewellery loose in a security tray, where it can be forgotten or picked up by mistake.
Keep the case in sight as it passes through the scanner and collect it immediately. In crowded airports, ask a travel companion to watch your belongings while you are being screened.
Customs rules when flying abroad
If you are taking gold or diamond jewellery out of India for a destination wedding abroad, it is wise to check current customs guidelines. Travellers often obtain an export certificate or register jewellery with customs at departure so they can bring it back without questions about duty. Requirements can change, so confirm the latest process with Indian customs before travel.
Destination countries may also have declaration rules for high-value jewellery or gold. Research these in advance and declare where required. Carry purchase invoices, valuation certificates or family documentation for heirloom pieces.
When returning to India, duty-free allowances for jewellery are limited and depend on factors such as gender and length of stay abroad. Avoid assumptions and check official sources so you are not surprised at the airport.
Storing jewellery at hotels and venues
Use the in-room safe for jewellery you are not wearing, and test it at check-in. Many heritage hotels and some resorts have small or no safes in older rooms; ask the front desk about safe-deposit boxes instead. Keep a written list of what is stored where.
At busy wedding venues, assign one trusted person to manage jewellery. Rooms are often full of relatives, staff and vendors, and pieces can go missing during outfit changes. A lockable jewellery case that stays with one person is much safer than pieces scattered across tables.
Never leave jewellery in a parked car, in a changing room or in a bag left on a chair at the venue. Take a quick photo after each function to confirm every piece is back in its place.
Before checking out, open the safe fully and run your hand along its floor and back wall. Small items like rings, nose pins and earring backs slip into corners and are easily missed in a dim room, and hotel lost property is the last place you want to be searching for a family nath.
Bags that keep jewellery safe on the move
A cabin trolley with an internal zipped pocket and a TSA lock is a good base, but the safest option is a crossbody or sling worn in front of you, especially in crowded airports and train stations. Choose one with a zip closure and an interior pocket for a slim jewellery roll.
For larger bridal sets, a compact hard jewellery case that fits inside a structured tote or weekender works well. Some travellers use a lockable vanity case for both makeup and jewellery, but separating them reduces the risk of spills.
Avoid flashy designer bags that draw attention in busy transit areas when you are carrying valuable pieces. Understated, sturdy bags with secure closures are better companions.
Travelling with jewellery by road and train
Not every wedding journey involves a flight. Many families drive to weddings in Jaipur, Lucknow, Nashik or Mysuru, or take overnight trains. Road trips feel safer because the jewellery stays in your car, but highway stops are exactly when bags go missing. Never leave the jewellery case in a parked car, even for a quick tea break. Keep it in a crossbody that one person wears for the entire journey, and avoid discussing what you are carrying at dhabas, petrol pumps or toll plazas.
On trains, choose a lower berth if you can and keep the jewellery case inside a small bag that stays with you while you sleep, ideally under your pillow or attached to you. A cable lock can secure your main suitcase under the berth, but it is not enough for valuables. Avoid placing the jewellery bag in an overhead rack or at the foot of the berth, where it is easy for someone to lift it during a station stop at night.
If a large family is travelling together, split the jewellery between two or three trusted adults rather than putting everything in one bag. That way, a single theft or misplaced bag does not wipe out the bride's entire collection. Keep a written list of which person carries which sets, and share it only within the immediate family.
Jewellery travel mistakes to avoid
Packing jewellery in checked luggage is the biggest mistake, followed closely by travelling without any record of what you are carrying. Photograph each piece, keep invoices and note which pouch holds what.
Another mistake is wearing all your best jewellery during travel. It draws attention, is uncomfortable on long flights and increases risk. Wear minimal pieces and keep the rest packed.
Finally, do not forget about the return trip. After a busy wedding, people are tired and distracted. Do a final inventory before leaving the hotel, check the safe twice and keep the jewellery case with you all the way home.
