Turkey trip luggage: the short answer
For a Turkey trip covering Istanbul, Cappadocia and perhaps Pamukkale or Antalya, take a medium 60 to 65 cm spinner or a soft weekender plus a day backpack. Istanbul's old town is hilly with cobbled lanes, and Cappadocia's cave hotels often involve stone steps, so compact, carryable luggage is best.
Turkey has become a favourite for Indian couples and families, with flights via Istanbul from Delhi and Mumbai and short domestic flights between cities. Domestic flights to Kayseri or Nevşehir for Cappadocia may have lower allowances than your international ticket, so check before packing.
Pack layers for chilly balloon mornings, modest outfits for mosques and photogenic dresses for Cappadocia rooftops.
A typical Turkey itinerary of eight to ten days involves three or four hotels, at least one domestic flight and plenty of walking. That combination favours a lighter bag. If you prefer hard shells, a 60 to 65 cm polycarbonate spinner with large wheels handles both Istanbul's uneven streets and airport floors well; if you prefer soft luggage, a structured weekender with a shoulder strap gives you the freedom to carry it up stone steps.

Istanbul hills and cobblestones
Sultanahmet, Galata and Balat are beautiful but hilly, with steep cobbled streets. A spinner with large wheels handles them better than small casters; tilt it and pull on two wheels when the slope gets steep.
Many boutique hotels in old Istanbul have narrow staircases and small lifts. A medium bag you can lift is far easier than a large one.
Taxis and transfers are useful for arrival, but traffic is heavy, so allow time.
In Istanbul, the tram from Sultanahmet to Kabataş and the ferries across the Bosphorus are wonderful ways to get around, but they are not ideal for large luggage. Keep transfers with luggage to taxis or pre-booked cars, and use public transport only once your bag is at the hotel. Ferry rides to Kadıköy or the Princes' Islands call for a light day bag.
Istanbul Airport is huge, with long walks between gates and to baggage claim. If you are connecting there onward to India or Europe, a cabin spinner is easier than a heavy backpack. Allow time for security, which can have long queues at peak hours, and keep liquids accessible in a clear pouch.
Cave hotels in Cappadocia
Cave hotels in Göreme and Uçhisar are magical, but rooms are often reached by stone steps, courtyards and terraces. Staff usually help, but a soft weekender or a medium spinner is easier for everyone.
Caves stay cool, and nights in Cappadocia can be cold even in summer. Pack a warm layer and cosy sleepwear.
Balloon flights start before sunrise, so keep a warm outfit ready the night before.
Some Cappadocia cave hotels are carved into hillsides with terraces at different levels, and porters carry bags up stone stairways. A spinner with a sturdy top handle and side handle is easier for staff to lift. Ask your hotel in advance about access, and if you have a large suitcase, request a room near reception.
Mosque dress code for women
Visiting mosques such as the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye requires women to cover their hair, shoulders and legs. Pack a scarf, a long skirt or loose trousers and a top with sleeves. Some mosques provide cover-ups, but carrying your own is easier.
You will remove your shoes at the entrance, so slip-on footwear helps. Carry a small bag for shoes if needed.
Hagia Sophia, now a functioning mosque, has similar requirements; check current visiting hours and rules.
In practice, a large cotton scarf or pashmina is the most useful item for a Turkey trip. It covers your hair and shoulders at mosques, keeps you warm on balloon mornings and doubles as a stylish layer for evenings in Istanbul. Pack two in neutral and bright shades, and keep one in your day bag at all times.
Carry a spare scarf for your partner or family members.
Cappadocia balloon morning outfits
Balloon mornings are cold before sunrise, even in summer. Wear layers, a warm jacket and closed shoes. Flowing dresses are popular for rooftop photos with balloons in the background, but wear them over leggings with a jacket for the cold.
Bright red, yellow or white dresses photograph beautifully against the sky. Pack one carefully folded at the top of your bag.
Sunglasses and a scarf protect against dust and wind during valley hikes.
Professional photographers in Cappadocia often offer rooftop shoots with flying dresses, long flowing gowns with trains that billow in the wind. Many provide dresses, but if you want to bring your own, choose lightweight chiffon or tulle that packs small. Fold it in a garment pouch and steam it in the hotel bathroom the night before.
Valley walks in Cappadocia, through the Rose, Red and Love valleys, are dusty and uneven. Sneakers with grip and breathable trousers are better than sandals and dresses for these hikes; save the dresses for rooftops.
Packing by season
Spring and autumn are ideal, with mild days and cool nights. Pack light knits, trousers, a trench and sneakers. Summer is hot in Istanbul and Antalya, with cooler nights in Cappadocia; pack breathable dresses and a light jacket. Winter is cold, with snow in Cappadocia; pack thermals, a coat and boots.
Pamukkale's travertine terraces require removing shoes, so pack sandals and a small towel.
Antalya beaches call for swimwear and cover-ups.
For a trip that includes the Turquoise Coast, Antalya, Fethiye or Bodrum, pack swimwear, a sarong, sandals and a sun hat alongside your Istanbul layers. A boat trip along the coast is a highlight; a beach tote and a waterproof pouch make it easy. This combination of city, countryside and coast is exactly why a capsule wardrobe built on layers works so well here.
Ramadan and public holidays can change opening hours of mosques, bazaars and museums, so check dates when planning. During those times, dressing a little more conservatively in older neighbourhoods such as Fatih and Eyüp is respectful and helps you feel comfortable while exploring the city's quieter, more traditional corners.
Shopping at the Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar are irresistible, with carpets, ceramics, lamps, spices and Turkish delight. Leave space in your suitcase and carry a foldable duffle.
Ceramics need padding; wrap them in clothes in the centre of a hard shell. Many shops can ship carpets, but get details in writing.
Keep receipts and check Indian customs allowances before returning.
Bargaining is part of the experience at the Grand Bazaar, and shopkeepers often offer tea. Take your time and pay attention to quality. Lightweight textiles such as peshtemal towels, scarves and table linen pack easily and make lovely gifts, while lamps and ceramics need careful padding and, ideally, a hard-shell case.
Turkish delight, baklava and dried fruit from the Spice Bazaar are popular gifts to bring back to India. Ask shops to vacuum-pack them, which keeps them fresh and reduces smell and mess in your suitcase. Pack them in a sealed bag in the centre of your case, cushioned by clothes.
Choosing luggage for Turkey
A medium polycarbonate spinner with large wheels or a soft weekender from brands like Samsonite, Mokobara, Nasher Miles or Hidesign suits Turkey well, starting from around ₹6,000.
Add a crossbody for crowded bazaars and a backpack for Cappadocia hikes.
Explore our luxury travel bags for a set ready for Turkey and beyond.
Turkey is also a destination where you might buy leather. Turkish leather jackets and bags are popular; if you plan to buy one, leave space and consider wearing the jacket on the flight home. Keep invoices together for any customs checks when you land back in India.
For a ten-day trip, a realistic split is a 65 cm spinner for clothes and shopping, a 20 litre backpack for hikes in the Rose and Red valleys, and a zip-top crossbody for bazaars and mosques. That trio covers every situation on a classic Istanbul, Cappadocia and coast itinerary without overloading anyone.
Keep your scarf in that crossbody too.
