South India
Tamil Nadu gives us the Kanjivaram (Kanchipuram), heavy mulberry silk with korvai borders, along with Arani, Salem, Thirubuvanam and Chettinad weaves. Karnataka is home to the feather-light Mysore crepe silk and Ilkal. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contribute Dharmavaram, Uppada, Venkatagiri, Gadwal, Pochampally ikat and Narayanpet.
North & Central India
Varanasi's Banarasi brocades (katan, tanchoi, jangla, shikargah) are the icons of North Indian weddings. Madhya Pradesh offers sheer Chanderi and reversible-border Maheshwari. Rajasthan's Kota Doria is famous for its khat checks.
West India
Maharashtra's Paithani with peacock pallus and Gujarat's double-ikat Patan Patola are among the most prized handlooms in the world.
East & North-East India
West Bengal's Baluchari tells mythological stories in its pallu; Odisha's Sambalpuri, Bomkai and Khandua are ikat masterpieces; Bihar and Jharkhand give us Tussar and Bhagalpuri; Assam produces golden Muga, Eri and Pat silk.
