Under-berth luggage size: the short answer
On most Indian Railways AC coaches, luggage that is no deeper than roughly 25 to 28 cm and up to about 65 cm long usually slides under a lower berth, though exact space varies with coach type, berth design and what other passengers have already stowed. In practice, slim cabin trolleys and soft medium suitcases fit most reliably, while large 75 cm hard shells often do not.
The space beneath lower berths is the safest place for luggage overnight because you can chain it and see it. Choosing a bag that fits there is the single best decision for a comfortable train journey. This guide explains how to measure, which shapes work and how the different AC classes compare.
Treat these measurements as practical guidance rather than official dimensions, since coaches differ and Indian Railways rules can change.

Why height and depth matter more than litres
When you slide a suitcase under a berth, it usually lies flat, so the bag's depth, the measurement from front to back when standing, becomes the height under the berth. A suitcase 25 cm deep fits far more easily than one 32 cm deep, even if both have similar capacity. The length must also clear the berth's support frame and leg room.
This is why slim profiles matter. Many cabin trolleys are about 20 to 25 cm deep, and some medium suitcases are designed thinner. Expandable suitcases grow when expanded, so keep expansion closed for train trips.
Soft suitcases have an extra advantage: they compress a few centimetres to squeeze under tight frames, and front pockets flatten when empty.
A quick conversion helps when shopping online. Suitcases are often sold in inches: 20 inches is roughly 51 cm, 24 inches about 61 cm and 28 inches about 71 cm. For train-heavy travel, 20 to 24 inch slim bags are the most practical. Many 28-inch suitcases are 30 cm or more deep, which is where problems begin under berths.
Capacity in litres can mislead you here, too. A slim but tall suitcase may hold the same as a short chunky one, but only the slim bag will slide under the berth. When comparing listings, read the depth figure first, then the height, and only then the capacity.
How to measure your bag and your berth
At home, lay your packed suitcase flat and measure its height including wheels and feet, and its length including the handle housing. Compare against roughly 25 to 28 cm for height as a working guide. If you travel the same route often, note the under-berth clearance on your next trip with a small tape measure.
Remember that under-berth space is shared. In an AC 3-tier bay, six passengers may need space beneath two lower berths and the side lower. Arriving early gives you the best choice of spots. Smaller bags can also go in the overhead racks above upper berths in some coaches.
If your bag does not fit, check whether the ticket examiner or attendant can suggest a spot, but avoid blocking aisles.
AC First, 2-tier and 3-tier compared
AC First Class cabins and coupes offer more under-seat space and a lockable door, so a medium suitcase fits more comfortably. AC 2-tier has wider bays with fewer passengers, so under-berth space per person is somewhat better than 3-tier. AC 3-tier and sleeper are the tightest, with more passengers per bay.
Chair cars on Shatabdi and Vande Bharat trains have overhead racks rather than berths, plus some space behind the last row of seats. Cabin trolleys usually fit overhead; larger bags may need floor space at the coach ends.
Side berths are narrow with little storage, so slim bags or a soft duffle suit them best.
Newer coach designs sometimes have slightly different berth frames and storage arrangements from older coaches. Two trains on the same route can offer different under-berth space. If you travel one route frequently, learning the coach type of your regular train helps you choose the ideal bag size over time.
Best suitcase shapes for under-berth storage
Rectangular soft trolleys with flat fronts are ideal. They slide smoothly, chain easily through handles and stack if needed. Slim hard-shell cabin bags in polycarbonate are also good and protect fragile items. Duffles with flat bases fit well but can be harder to slide on dusty floors.
Avoid bags with bulky protruding wheels, rigid external pockets or oversized handles. Recessed spinner wheels reduce height. Two-wheel trolleys usually have a flatter profile than four-wheel spinners, which helps under berths.
Carry a cover or old bedsheet to protect a light-coloured suitcase from floor dust.
Duffles with a rigid base board are a clever option. They hold their shape when sliding under a berth, yet the soft sides compress when space is tight. If you choose a duffle for train travel, pick one with end handles so you can pull it out from beneath the berth without lying on the floor, and a shoulder strap for platforms with stairs.
Colour helps as well: a bag in a strong colour is easier to spot under a dim berth at night.
Packing a train-friendly medium suitcase
If you need more space than a cabin bag, choose a soft medium suitcase around 65 cm with a slim depth, or split luggage into a cabin trolley plus a duffle. Two smaller bags are easier to fit under berths than one large one, and you can put one under each lower berth if needed.
Pack heavy items near the wheels and keep the suitcase evenly filled so it lies flat. Bulging shapes catch on berth frames. Keep overnight essentials in a separate tote so you never need to pull the main bag out during the night.
Use packing cubes so you can grab a single cube from the suitcase without unloading everything in a cramped bay.
For long-distance family journeys, such as a Chennai to Delhi trip of more than a day, consider giving each person a slim cabin trolley rather than sharing two large suitcases. Four slim bags tuck under different berths and racks, while two large suitcases may leave you searching for space and stepping over bags all journey.
A soft duffle can also live on the upper berth at your feet if you are travelling alone and want luggage within reach, provided it is not too heavy to lift up.
Locking and securing under-berth luggage
Most lower berths have a frame, loop or ring under them where a chain lock can be fastened. Run the chain through your suitcase handle, around the frame and lock it. This simple step deters opportunistic theft at night and at busy stations.
Combination locks on zips add another layer. Choose luggage with lockable zip pullers. Keep valuables in a crossbody bag that stays with you. Never keep cash or jewellery in the under-berth suitcase.
Choose a bag with a top grab handle as well as a side one. The side handle makes it easy to pull a flat-lying suitcase out from under the berth.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying a large deep suitcase for train-heavy travel is the main mistake. Another is expanding bags before a train trip, which adds critical centimetres. Ignoring wheel height is common too; chunky wheels can make an otherwise slim bag too tall.
Arriving late leaves you with little choice of space. Storing valuables in the under-berth bag is risky. And forgetting a chain lock means you either stay alert all night or take a risk.
Finally, do not rely on pictures alone when buying online; check the listed depth in centimetres before ordering.
Another practical mistake is forgetting that you will need to pull the bag out again at your destination, sometimes in a hurry at a short halt. A suitcase jammed tightly under a berth can be hard to free. Leave a little clearance, and position the handle facing the aisle so you can grab it quickly when the train slows.
Pick luggage that fits the train
Slim soft trolleys, compact hard-shell cabin bags and flat-based duffles are the best choices for Indian train travel. Measure before you buy and keep expansion closed on the journey.
