What makes a good under-seat bag
A good under-seat bag for flights measures roughly 40 x 30 x 15 cm or smaller, holds about 15 to 25 litres, opens wide at the top and has a trolley sleeve so it can ride on your cabin trolley. It should carry everything you need during the flight, from passport and medication to a shawl and a charger, so you never have to open the overhead bin mid-journey.
This is the bag you will touch most on any trip. It stays at your feet on the plane, sits on your lap in the taxi and doubles as a day bag at your destination. Getting it right makes travel calmer.
Think of it as your mobile base camp. Your trolley can sit in a bin several rows behind, but your under-seat bag stays within reach for the whole flight. Anything you might want between take-off and landing belongs here.

Personal item sizes: what airlines typically allow
Most airlines allow one cabin bag plus one personal item such as a handbag or laptop bag. On Indian domestic routes, the personal item has typically been described in dimensions around 40 x 30 x 10 to 15 cm, and the combined weight of the cabin bag and personal item may be counted together under some fare rules. International carriers have their own wording and some use weight-only rules.
Because these allowances change and depend on fare type, use them as guidelines and confirm with your airline. As a practical rule, if your under-seat bag fits comfortably under the seat in front without pressing on your feet, it is the right size.
Aircraft vary too. The space under the seat on a narrow-body Airbus A320 differs from that on a wide-body Boeing 777, and bulkhead or emergency-exit seats often have no under-seat storage at all during take-off and landing. If you book those seats for legroom, plan for your personal item to go in the bin for part of the flight.
Soft tote, structured tote or mini trolley?
Soft totes in nylon or supple leather compress to fit under seats on smaller aircraft and fold into a suitcase on arrival. Structured leather totes look polished at business meetings and protect a laptop better, but are less forgiving under tight seats. Mini under-seat trolleys on wheels, around 40 to 45 cm tall, suit travellers who want to roll everything; however, they can exceed personal-item sizes and are heavy for their volume.
For most women, a medium structured tote with a zip top is the sweet spot. It can carry a 13 or 14-inch laptop, closes securely and transitions from a Mumbai boardroom to dinner.
Material choice affects longevity. Full-grain leather develops a patina and lasts for years, though it is heavier. Top-grain or coated leather resists stains more easily. Premium nylons are light and water resistant, and they clean easily after a spilled coffee on a red-eye flight.
Features worth paying for
A trolley sleeve on the back is essential if you carry a cabin trolley. It lets the bag slide over the handle and stops it slipping off on uneven floors. A padded laptop compartment with a separate tablet sleeve protects devices. A zipped top closure keeps belongings secure in crowded terminals. An external quick-access pocket for boarding passes and a phone saves rummaging at security.
Inside, look for a key leash, a water bottle sleeve and a lined pocket for sunglasses. Feet or studs on the base protect leather from wet airport floors. Water-resistant materials help in the monsoon.
Strap and handle design matters for comfort. Look for handles with a drop long enough to wear on the shoulder over a jacket, and consider a detachable crossbody strap for hands-free movement in crowded terminals. A bag that only works in the hand will tire you on long walks.
Weight of the empty bag is easy to overlook. A heavily structured leather tote can weigh well over a kilo before you add anything, and if your airline counts the personal item within a shared cabin allowance, that kilo comes straight out of your clothing budget. Lighter leathers and nylon blends keep the bag useful without eating into your limit.
What to pack in your under-seat bag
Documents first: passport, visa printouts if needed, boarding pass and a copy of your hotel booking. Then health: prescription medicines, pain relievers, hand sanitiser and a small travel-size moisturiser within liquid limits. Comfort items: a light cashmere or cotton shawl for chilly cabins, socks, an eye mask, earplugs and a neck pillow if it fits.
Electronics go here too: phone, laptop, power bank and chargers. Many airlines require power banks to be in cabin baggage rather than check-in luggage, so keep yours on your person. Add a lip balm, a mini mirror, a pen for arrival forms, a small snack and an empty water bottle to fill after security.
For long-haul flights to Europe or the United States, add compression socks, a toothbrush, a travel-size toothpaste and a change of underwear in case your check-in bag is delayed. For a short domestic hop, keep it lighter: documents, phone, a book and a snack.
Organising for quick access
Use a small pouch for liquids so you can remove them easily at security, a cable pouch for chargers and a slim wallet for currency. Keep the passport in an outer pocket that zips. When you board, lift out the shawl and earphones before placing the bag under the seat so you do not have to wrestle with it later.
A cohesive palette helps. A tan leather tote with a matching pouch looks deliberate, and you will find small items faster in a bag with a light-coloured lining.
Before boarding, put your phone and earphones in a jacket pocket or the bag's outer pocket. Once seated, slide the bag under the seat with the zip facing you, so you can open it with your feet still comfortably placed.
Pairing with your cabin trolley
The under-seat bag and trolley work as a team. Put heavier items such as shoes and toiletries in the trolley and lighter, frequently needed items in the personal bag. If the trolley is a hard shell, a soft leather or nylon tote balances the look. If the trolley is soft, a structured leather tote adds polish.
Colour coordination makes a set look intentional: black with tan, navy with cognac or blush with gold hardware. A matching leather luggage tag on both pieces ties them together and helps you identify them.
If you travel for work, a tote with a laptop sleeve keeps the trolley for clothes and shoes. If you travel for leisure, a soft tote that can be folded into the trolley at your destination and used as a beach bag offers more versatility.
Budget and the premium end
A well-made under-seat tote in quality leather or premium nylon from brands such as Hidesign, Da Milano, Lavie, Caprese, Tommy Hilfiger or Mokobara is often priced from a few thousand rupees upward, with luxury pieces going much higher. The premium buys better leather, stronger stitching at stress points, smoother zips and linings that do not tear after a few trips.
If you fly often, it is worth spending on this bag more than almost any other, because it is the piece people see you carry and the one you handle most. A good under-seat tote should last for years and look as smart at a client meeting as at a beach café.
Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a bag that is too big, which then has to go in the overhead bin and defeats the point. Packing heavy items here and straining your shoulder. Forgetting the trolley sleeve. Buying an open-top tote for crowded airports. Carrying liquids in random places so security delays you.
Finally, do not leave the bag on the floor of the aisle while boarding; it is easy to forget in the shuffle. Keep it on your shoulder until you are seated.
Lastly, do not buy a bag simply because it is labelled under-seat. Check the dimensions against your usual aircraft and airline, and test it with your laptop and a water bottle before you travel.
