Why your main luggage stays in Katra

Most pilgrims arrive in Katra by train at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra station, by road from Jammu, or after flying into Jammu. Katra has many hotels and guesthouses, and almost everyone leaves their main luggage there. Some hotels and the shrine board's facilities offer cloakroom services; check availability when you book.

Because you will only use your main bag for a night or two in Katra, any comfortable luggage works: a cabin spinner, a weekender or a duffle. Choose a size that is easy to manage on trains and in autos from the station. A 55 cm cabin spinner or a 40 to 50 litre duffle is plenty for most pilgrims.

Trains to Katra, such as the Vande Bharat and other express services from Delhi, have limited luggage space, particularly in chair-car coaches where racks overhead are narrow. A cabin spinner fits on the rack or between seats; a large check-in suitcase may have to stay in the aisle or at the end of the coach, which is inconvenient on a long journey. On overnight sleeper trains, soft bags slide under berths more easily.

If you are flying into Jammu, remember that domestic economy fares typically include around 15 kg of check-in baggage and 7 kg in the cabin, though this varies by airline and fare. Jammu airport security can be thorough, so pack neatly and keep electronics easy to access.

From Jammu, taxis and buses to Katra take about one and a half to two hours. A compact bag fits easily in a shared taxi boot, and you can start the trek the same day if you wish.

Security rules and what not to carry

Security checks are thorough on the yatra route. Items such as certain electronics, sharp objects, lighters and some bags may be restricted near the Bhawan, and phones and leather items may need to be deposited in lockers before darshan. Rules can change, so check the current guidance from the shrine board before you travel.

Keep your trek bag simple: no unnecessary electronics, no sharp items, no leather if you can avoid it. Cloakrooms near the Bhawan are available for depositing items before darshan, but queues can be long in peak seasons.

You will also need a yatra registration or RFID card, which is typically issued at Katra or obtained online; carry it in an easy-to-reach pocket.

Choosing the trek backpack

A 15 to 25 litre backpack in light nylon is ideal. Look for padded shoulder straps, a chest strap to stabilise the load, side pockets for water bottles, and a rain cover. A small cross-body sling for your registration card, cash and phone keeps essentials at hand during checks.

Avoid heavy leather bags or large handbags; they become uncomfortable over 12 km and may face restrictions. Choose fabric over leather for the trek.

Pack the backpack so that the heaviest item, usually water, sits close to your back and between your shoulder blades. Put the poncho and warm layer at the top for quick access, and snacks in a side or lid pocket. A one-litre bottle is usually enough because water and refreshments are available at many points along the route, but carrying your own saves time and money.

For an overnight trek, when many pilgrims walk through the night and reach the Bhawan for an early-morning darshan, add a small torch and a thin warm layer; temperatures drop noticeably after midnight, even in summer.

A Vaishno Devi packing list for women

For the trek: comfortable salwar suit or track pants with a top, a shawl or stole, a light jacket or fleece, comfortable sports shoes, a water bottle, dry snacks, a small towel, a rain poncho, any personal medicines, ID, yatra registration card, cash and a power bank if permitted.

For the hotel in Katra: a change of clothes for each day, nightwear, toiletries, a pair of slippers and a light shawl. Winter pilgrims, from December to February, need thermals, a warm jacket, a woollen cap and gloves, as nights at the Bhawan can be very cold, with occasional snow on the hills above.

Planning the climb: walking, ponies, battery cars and helicopters

Many pilgrims walk the full route, often overnight to avoid the daytime heat. Others hire ponies, palkis or porters, or use the battery car from Ardhkuwari to Bhawan, or the helicopter service from Katra to Sanjichhat, which typically has strict baggage limits. If you use a pony or palki, keep your backpack on you rather than tied to the saddle.

If you plan to visit Bhairon Temple after darshan, there is a ropeway or an additional climb. Keep water and snacks handy.

If you are using a pony or a palki, wear your backpack on your front or hold it on your lap, and keep the waist strap clipped. Ponies move in a line and brush against walls and other riders, so loose bags can snag. Agree on rates at the official counters, and keep your registration card in your sling so you can show it when asked.

Helicopter passengers should arrive with only the small bag allowed by the operator and expect to be weighed. Any extra luggage will usually need to be left at Katra, so plan for that from the beginning.

Mistakes to avoid on the Vaishno Devi yatra

Carrying a heavy bag on the trek is the most common mistake; 12 km uphill with 6 or 7 kg on your back is exhausting. Others include wearing new shoes, carrying restricted items that must then be deposited, forgetting the registration card, and not carrying a warm layer in winter.

Some pilgrims bring heavy suitcases on trains with no help to carry them. Choose luggage that you can manage alone.

Another mistake is leaving no room for prasad and souvenirs. Pilgrims often bring back dry-fruit prasad, chunris, coins and small idols from Katra's markets, along with walnuts and dry fruits from Jammu. Leave a little space or carry a foldable tote. Keep prasad in a sealed box at the top of your bag so it stays intact.

Finally, do not underestimate the crowds during Navratri, summer holidays and the New Year. Waiting times can be long and accommodation fills quickly. Pack a little extra for delays, and book hotels in Katra with luggage storage in advance.

Families and elderly pilgrims

Families often travel to Vaishno Devi with elderly parents and children. Use one shared spinner for clothing in Katra, and a light backpack for each adult on the trek with water, snacks and warm layers. Carry a small medical kit with blood pressure, diabetes or other regular medicines, and a list of medical conditions in case of emergencies.

For children, pack an extra set of clothes, wet wipes and snacks. Keep a photo of each child on your phone and a contact card in their pocket in case you get separated in crowds. Agree on a meeting point at each major stop.
