What are base notes in perfume?
What are base notes in perfume? They are the deepest, slowest-evaporating layer of a fragrance, such as sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, patchouli, oud, amber, vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin and musks. Base notes appear gradually after the first hour and can last many hours on skin, often longer on fabric.
Base notes are the foundation of a perfume. They anchor the lighter notes, slow their evaporation and give a fragrance depth, warmth and staying power. What you smell on your dupatta the next morning is almost always the base.
Because they last longest, base notes matter more than any other layer when choosing a perfume you will live with every day.
In Indian perfumery traditions, base materials like sandalwood, oud and amber resins were always treasured, used in attars, incense and rituals. Modern luxury perfumes often build on these same foundations, combining them with contemporary molecules for added smoothness and radiance.

Common base notes and their character
Woods: sandalwood is creamy and soft, cedar is dry and pencil-like, vetiver is earthy and smoky-green, and patchouli is dark, earthy and slightly sweet. Oud, also called agarwood, is rich, resinous and sometimes leathery or animalic.
Resins and balsams: amber accords, benzoin, labdanum, frankincense and myrrh feel warm, glowing and slightly sweet, often reminiscent of incense. Sweet bases: vanilla, tonka bean and caramel give comfort and softness. Musks: clean, skin-like and soft, now mostly synthetic for ethical and consistency reasons.
Many perfumes combine several of these. A rose perfume with an oud and amber base feels completely different from the same rose over clean musk and cedar.
Leather, smoky and mossy accords also appear in the base. Oakmoss, once central to classic chypres, is now restricted in quantity, so many modern perfumes use other materials to create a similar mossy, forest-floor effect.
Some modern bases also include ambergris-like and woody amber materials, which give a warm, mineral radiance and remarkable staying power in many recent designer launches.
Why base notes last so long
Base-note materials are made of larger, heavier molecules that evaporate slowly. While citrus molecules leave the skin within minutes, woods, resins and musks can remain for hours. This slow evaporation is what gives a perfume its longevity.
Some base materials also act as fixatives, meaning they help hold lighter notes in place and slow their escape. Traditional perfumery used resins and balsams for this purpose, while modern perfumery also uses certain synthetic molecules specifically for staying power.
This is why perfumes with rich bases, such as oud, amber and vanilla compositions, are known for strong longevity, while fresh citrus colognes with light bases fade quickly.
The base also influences how a perfume behaves on clothes. Woody and musky bases tend to linger on fabric for days, so a scarf or shawl can carry a scent long after the skin has stopped projecting it.
Base notes and the Indian connection
Many classic base notes are deeply connected to India. Sandalwood from Mysore was historically prized worldwide, and its creamy warmth still defines countless luxury perfumes. Vetiver, known locally as khus, is used in traditional cooling attars and summer drinks.
Oud and amber resins are familiar from incense, temple rituals and attars used in North India and among Muslim communities. Patchouli has long been used in Indian textiles and perfumery. When Indian women smell these notes in a luxury perfume, they often feel instantly familiar.
Choosing a perfume with a base you already associate with comfort, such as sandalwood or khus, is a smart way to find a fragrance you will love long term.
Rose, too, often appears alongside base notes in Indian-inspired perfumes, paired with oud and saffron in a style rooted in Mughal court perfumery and still popular for weddings.
Base notes in Indian heat and humidity
Heavy bases behave differently in warm climates. Sweet vanilla, caramel and dense amber can feel cloying in humid summers, and strong oud can become overpowering in crowded spaces. These bases often shine more in winter or in air-conditioned evening venues.
For summer, lighter bases work better: clean musks, light cedar, vetiver, soft sandalwood and transparent ambers. They still provide longevity but feel airy rather than dense. Vetiver in particular is naturally cooling and earthy, ideal for Indian heat.
Adjust the amount too. Two sprays of an amber-based EDP is often enough in summer, while in Delhi winters three or four may feel right.
In monsoon, earthy bases like vetiver and patchouli can feel especially fitting, echoing the scent of wet soil, while very sweet bases may feel heavy in the damp air.
How to judge base notes when testing
Base notes need time. Spray a perfume on your skin or a labelled blotter and smell it after two, four and six hours. The blotter is especially useful because you can smell it the next day to see what remains.
Ask yourself whether you enjoy the dry-down. Is it creamy, smoky, sweet, earthy or powdery? Does it feel comforting or heavy? Many people discover they love a perfume's top but dislike its base, or vice versa.
If you consistently enjoy perfumes with a certain base, such as sandalwood or musk, use that as a filter when shopping online. Base preferences tend to be stable and reliable.
Clothing choices matter too. Wool shawls and heavy silks hold rich bases beautifully in winter, while light cottons suit airy musks in summer. Test delicate fabrics before spraying, as some concentrated perfumes can mark them.
Base notes and skin chemistry
The base is where skin chemistry shows most clearly. Musks may smell clean on one person and slightly sweet or warm on another. Patchouli can feel earthy on some skin and almost chocolatey on others. Vanilla can turn soft and creamy or sugary.
Oily skin often holds base notes longer and makes them richer. Dry skin may absorb and lose them faster, which is why moisturising helps. Body temperature and climate also influence how strongly the base projects.
This is why the same perfume can smell different on you than on a friend, particularly after a few hours. Always test the dry-down on your own skin before buying.
Hormonal changes, medication and diet can also affect how base notes smell over time. If a long-time favourite suddenly feels different, retest it rather than assuming the formula has changed.
Skin that is well moisturised generally gives a smoother, longer-lasting base, so apply an unscented lotion before testing.
Base notes and value for money
Base notes often contain some of the most expensive natural materials in perfumery, such as genuine sandalwood oils, oud, ambergris-like materials and fine resins. Perfumes with rich bases are frequently priced higher, especially in niche lines.
However, a strong base also means fewer sprays and longer wear, which can lower your cost per wear. An EDP with an amber and woody base might need only two sprays for a full day, while a fresh scent with a light base might need several applications.
When comparing perfumes, consider how long the base lasts on your skin, not just the price. A ₹7,000 bottle that lasts all day with two sprays may offer better value than a cheaper scent that fades within two hours.
Over time, you may build a wardrobe where each perfume has a different foundation, making it easy to pick one for the weather, mood and occasion of the day.
Using base notes to build a collection
Think of base notes as the foundation of your fragrance wardrobe. A clean musk or light cedar base suits office days, a sandalwood or vetiver base suits relaxed daytime wear, and amber, oud or vanilla bases suit evenings, weddings and winter.
You can also layer around bases. A citrus or floral perfume over a simple musk or sandalwood lotion gains depth and longevity. Avoid combining two heavy bases, such as strong oud and dense vanilla, unless you are confident they work together.
Explore luxury perfumes by their dry-down, and read more fragrance basics on our blog to choose foundations that suit your climate and lifestyle.
For gifting, a familiar base such as sandalwood or soft musk is often the safest choice, since most people find these comforting. Bolder bases like oud or heavy patchouli are better when you know the recipient's taste.
