The short answer: what shoes to wear on a flight
The best shoes to wear on a flight are slip-on, cushioned and slightly roomy: knit or leather slip-on sneakers, soft leather loafers, or padded ballet flats. They come off quickly at security, accommodate the swelling that happens on longer flights, and are comfortable for long walks between gates. Wear your bulkiest pair on the plane, such as boots or chunky trainers, only if you need them at the destination and have checked how easily they come off.
Shoes are the most overlooked part of a travel outfit. They decide how quickly you clear screening, whether your feet ache by the time you reach the gate at Delhi T3 or Dubai's Terminal 3, and how polished you look on arrival. This guide compares every common option, from sneakers to sandals, so you can choose confidently for any trip.

Why feet need special care on flights
When you sit for hours with your legs bent, fluid can pool in your lower legs and feet, causing them to swell. Lower cabin pressure and dehydration add to the effect. On a two-hour domestic hop you might barely notice; on a ten-hour flight from Mumbai to London many people find their usual shoes feel noticeably tighter.
That is why stiff, narrow or brand-new shoes are risky. Shoes with stretch uppers, adjustable fastenings or a little extra room are far more comfortable. Some travellers go half a size up for a dedicated travel pair.
Cabins can also be cold, so open-toe shoes may leave you chilly. Carry a pair of thin socks or foldable slippers in your personal item. Walking the aisle every hour or two and doing ankle circles in your seat also helps circulation; if you have any medical concerns about swelling, talk to your doctor before a long flight.
Sneakers: the all-rounder
Sneakers are the most popular flight shoe for good reason. They cushion your feet on long terminal walks, support you on aircraft stairs during remote boarding, and go with almost every travel outfit, from co-ords and joggers to dresses and jeans. Slip-on and knit styles are the most practical because they come off in seconds at screening.
If you prefer laced sneakers, loosen them enough to pull on and off without untying. Choose clean white, cream, grey or black for versatility. Leather sneakers look more polished for business trips; canvas and knit versions are lighter and more breathable for summer.
Avoid chunky platform trainers on long-haul flights if they feel heavy, and skip sneakers with complex lacing systems, which slow you down in the screening queue.
Socks deserve a mention of their own. Merino or bamboo-blend socks wick moisture and regulate temperature better than synthetic ones, which helps on hot Indian tarmacs and in cold cabins alike. If you wear compression socks, choose shoes with enough volume to accommodate the extra fabric, since a snug sneaker can become tight once the stockings are on and your feet begin to swell.
Loafers and flats: the polished choice
Leather loafers are the chic traveller's favourite. They slip on and off instantly, look smart with trousers, co-ords and kurta sets, and are ideal if you are heading straight to a meeting in Bengaluru or a family lunch in Delhi. Choose soft unlined leather or suede with a cushioned insole; stiff patent loafers can pinch as feet swell.
Ballet flats are light and pack flat, but many have thin soles with little support. Look for padded insoles and a slightly wider toe box. They are better for short domestic flights than for twelve-hour journeys with long transits.
Mules and backless loafers are the fastest shoes for security, but make sure they grip well, as you may climb aircraft stairs with a cabin bag in hand.
Boots, sandals and heels: when they work
Ankle boots make sense when you fly to a cold destination and need them on arrival, since they take a lot of space in a suitcase. Choose a side-zip or pull-on style without heavy metal buckles so they come off easily. Tall boots are harder to remove and can feel tight with swelling.
Sandals and sliders work for short flights to Goa, Bali or Phuket, but bring socks or a light layer for cold cabins. In an emergency evacuation, enclosed shoes offer more protection, which is one reason many experienced flyers avoid open footwear.
Heels are the least practical choice. Long walks, escalators, uneven stairs and swelling feet make them uncomfortable. If you need heels on arrival, pack them in your cabin bag and change after landing.
For ethnic outfits, flat juttis and kolhapuris are lovely on short flights, but they offer little cushioning. If you are wearing a kurta set on a longer journey with transits, white leather sneakers or soft embroidered slip-on sneakers keep the look festive while being kinder to your feet. Many brides and wedding guests travel this way and change into embellished footwear at the venue.
Shoe choice by trip type
Domestic business trip: leather loafers or sleek leather sneakers, with a pair of heels or formal flats in your cabin trolley for the meeting.
Long-haul international: knit slip-on sneakers half a size roomy, plus socks and foldable slippers in your personal item.
Beach holiday: canvas slip-ons or sneakers for the flight, sandals packed. Winter Europe trip: side-zip ankle boots on the plane, sneakers packed. Wedding travel: comfortable sneakers or juttis for the journey; heels and wedding footwear packed in individual dust bags in your check-in case.
Indian train journeys: sturdy sneakers or closed sandals with good grip for platforms, plus flip-flops for the berth.
Packing the rest of your shoes
Shoes are bulky and heavy, so plan them as carefully as outfits. Limit yourself to three pairs for most trips: the pair you wear, one comfortable alternative and one dressy option. Wear the heaviest pair on the plane to save suitcase weight and space.
Pack shoes heel to toe along the hinge or bottom of a hard-shell case, where the frame protects them. Stuff socks, chargers or rolled belts inside to keep their shape. Use shoe bags or dust bags so soles do not mark clothes; many premium suitcases from brands like Samsonite, Tumi and Mokobara include separate compartments or pouches.
For leather weekenders, keep shoes in a separate washable pouch and place them at the base to keep the bag balanced.
What does the premium buy in a travel shoe? Mostly better cushioning that does not compress after a few months, softer and more breathable uppers in real leather or quality knit, and outsoles with reliable grip on polished terminal floors and wet aircraft stairs during the monsoon. A well-made pair also holds its shape after being crammed into suitcases, which keeps it looking smart for longer. If you fly often, spending a little more on one excellent pair of travel shoes is one of the most noticeable comfort upgrades you can make.
Matching flight shoes to your luggage and outfit
Shoes and luggage sit close together in every airport photo, so coordinating them pays off. White sneakers pair beautifully with light trolleys in cream, sage or champagne. Tan loafers echo cognac leather weekenders and trims. Black leather sneakers or boots look sleek with black or graphite spinners.
Use the two-plus-one rule: shoes and luggage share a colour, the outfit adds contrast, or vice versa. A navy trolley, navy loafers and a white co-ord is crisp and nautical. A tan weekender, tan loafers and a black outfit is classic.
Finish with a coordinating handbag and you have an effortless, cohesive travel look.
Flight shoe mistakes to avoid
The most painful mistake is wearing new shoes. Break in any travel pair over a few weeks of daily wear. The second is tight shoes with no give. The third is complicated fastenings that hold up the security queue.
Fourth, forgetting socks with loafers or sneakers, leading to cold feet and blisters on long journeys. Fifth, packing your only comfortable pair in checked luggage, then being stuck in heels when the bag is delayed. Keep at least one comfortable pair accessible, and you will step off every flight ready to explore.
