What to wear on a business class flight
For a business class flight, wear relaxed tailoring in soft fabrics: wide-leg trousers or a knit co-ord, a silk-blend or fine-knit top, an unstructured blazer or long cardigan, leather loafers or minimal sneakers, and a structured leather tote. There is no formal dress code on most airlines, but premium cabins and lounges reward a polished look, and it helps if you are travelling for work or heading straight to an event.
The ideal business class outfit works across three settings: the lounge, the lie-flat seat and the arrival hall. It should look elegant over a glass of champagne, feel comfortable enough to sleep in or change out of, and appear fresh when you step off the aircraft in London, Dubai or Singapore.
The difference between economy and business class dressing is mostly about freedom. In a premium cabin you have more space to move, change and sleep, so you can choose slightly more refined fabrics and silhouettes, such as a silk-blend shirt or a long knit skirt, that would feel impractical crammed into a standard seat for ten hours.

Is there a dress code in business class?
Most airlines do not publish a strict dress code for business class, though many have general conditions of carriage that allow staff to refuse passengers whose clothing is offensive or unsafe. Some airlines historically expected smart dress for staff travelling on standby or upgrade tickets, and some travellers believe a smart appearance helps with upgrades, though there is no guarantee.
In practice, you will see everything from suits to tracksuits in premium cabins. But a polished outfit makes the experience feel special, suits the lounge environment and saves changing if you are meeting clients on arrival.
Always check your specific airline's policy if you are unsure, especially if travelling on a staff or upgrade ticket.
There is also a practical, cultural element. On flights to the Gulf, many travellers prefer covered shoulders and knees on arrival, and a large scarf or longline cardigan makes that easy without changing your outfit. Dressing with a little more polish also helps when you are met by a driver, a hotel representative or a client at the arrivals gate.
The lounge-to-seat outfit formula
Base: a silk-blend camisole, fine-knit top or crisp cotton shirt. Bottoms: wide-leg crepe or knit trousers with a comfortable waist, or a long knit skirt. Layer: an unstructured blazer, a long cashmere-blend cardigan or a soft trench. Shoes: leather loafers, suede flats or sleek leather sneakers.
This formula looks refined in the lounge and on the jet bridge. Once on board, remove the blazer and hang it if the cabin crew offers, slip off your shoes and add socks or the slippers provided.
Choose fabrics that do not crease heavily: crepe, ponte, jersey, fine knits and silk blends with stretch.
Colour keeps the formula elegant. Stick to two or three tones from a refined palette: navy and ivory, black and camel, charcoal and cream, or soft grey with blush. Tonal looks photograph beautifully in lounges, whose lighting is often warm and flattering, and they make it easy to mix pieces for the return flight.
Sleeping in a lie-flat seat
Many long-haul business class cabins offer lie-flat seats, and some airlines provide pyjamas or loungewear on longer sectors, though this varies by airline and route. If pyjamas are provided, change after the meal service and keep your day outfit folded in your cabin bag or hung in the wardrobe if available.
If no pyjamas are provided, pack your own matching modal or silk-blend lounge set in your carry-on. It packs small and looks chic enough for the walk to the lavatory.
Keep a skincare pouch with cleanser, moisturiser, eye cream and lip balm, all under 100 ml, plus an eye mask and earplugs, though many amenity kits include some of these.
Hair and skin matter more on overnight sectors. Plait or loosely bun your hair before sleeping so it does not tangle, remove make-up after dinner, and apply a rich moisturiser, since cabin air is dry. About forty minutes before landing, change back into your day outfit, apply a tinted moisturiser and balm, and you will walk off looking rested even if you slept only a few hours.
Bags and luggage for premium cabins
Business class allowances are typically more generous for both cabin and checked baggage, but rules vary by airline, so check yours. A premium 55 cm hard-shell spinner from brands such as Tumi, Samsonite, Delsey or Mokobara suits the setting, and a full-grain leather tote or weekender adds polish.
For business travel, a cabin case with a front laptop compartment lets you work in the lounge without opening the main compartment. A garment bag is useful if you need to carry a suit or sari for meetings and events.
Choose luggage in black, navy, charcoal or a refined neutral, matching your tote and outfit.
Premium travel is often about seamless movement, and luggage plays a big part. Priority tags on checked bags help them come out early on the belt, but only if your case is easy to identify. A sleek dark case with a discreet leather tag in a contrasting colour is both elegant and practical. For the cabin, a spinner that glides quietly across lounge floors and lifts easily into the overhead locker suits the calm, unhurried feel of a premium journey.
If you are flying with a sari or lehenga for an event on arrival, a garment bag laid flat in the overhead locker, or hung in the cabin wardrobe where the crew permits, keeps it far fresher than folding it into a suitcase.
Accessories that complete the look
A classic watch, small gold or diamond studs, and a fine chain are all you need in jewellery. Remove bulky rings and bracelets before sleeping.
Sunglasses help on arrival, especially after an overnight flight. A silk or cashmere scarf adds warmth and elegance. A leather passport holder and matching luggage tag finish the look.
Noise-cancelling headphones in a neutral colour are practical and look sleek.
Leave anything precious but unnecessary at home. A large diamond ring or heirloom bangles are better kept in a hotel safe at your destination or not taken at all, as removing them to sleep and then misplacing them is a common travel mishap. If you must carry fine jewellery, use a padded jewellery roll in your cabin bag rather than a handbag pocket.
Business class outfits for different trips
Corporate trip: navy wide-leg trousers, white silk-blend blouse, navy blazer, black loafers, black leather laptop tote and a black spinner. Arrive meeting-ready.
Honeymoon: cream knit co-ord, camel cashmere-blend cardigan, white leather sneakers, a tan tote and a champagne cabin case. Change into a silk dress for the lounge photos if you like.
Wedding travel: a pastel silk-blend kurta set with a fine dupatta, embroidered juttis or sneakers, and a vanity case with jewellery in your carry-on.
Winter Europe: charcoal knit trousers, black merino turtleneck, long camel coat, ankle boots and a black spinner.
Shorter premium flights within Asia or to the Gulf, such as Mumbai to Dubai, need less planning: skip the lounge set and simply wear a comfortable knit co-ord or a dress with a cardigan. On ultra-long-haul routes, such as Delhi or Mumbai to San Francisco or New York, plan for a full night's sleep and a morning arrival, with a fresh outfit in your carry-on.
Mistakes to avoid in premium cabins
Avoid fabrics that crease badly, tight waistbands, heavy jewellery and strong perfume, which affects neighbours even in spacious cabins. Do not over-dress either; a stiff suit or evening gown is uncomfortable and impractical for a long flight.
Do not forget layers. Business class cabins can be cool, and while blankets are usually provided, a cardigan or scarf is still useful.
Finally, do not let your luggage undermine the look. Battered or mismatched bags look out of place beside a polished outfit. A coordinated premium cabin case and tote complete the experience.
Another mistake is assuming the airline will provide everything. Amenity kits, slippers and pyjamas vary widely by airline, route and season, so always carry your own essentials: socks, a scarf, a basic skincare pouch, medication and a change of top.
