What to wear to a Holi party: the quick answer
For a Holi party, wear an old or inexpensive white or light-coloured cotton outfit that covers most of your skin: a white cotton kurta with leggings or salwar, a white tee with shorts or joggers, or a white cotton co-ord. Cotton absorbs colour beautifully for photos and breathes in March heat, while full coverage protects your skin. Add sunglasses, a bandana and old flip-flops or sneakers you do not mind ruining.
Holi parties range from society celebrations with dhol and thandai to big ticketed events with DJs and rain dances, plus private farmhouse or pool parties. Each has slightly different needs, but the core rules stay the same: colour-friendly, comfortable, modest and disposable.

Why white and why cotton
White is the classic Holi colour because every shade of gulal shows up vividly on it, turning your outfit into a canvas by the end of the day. Off-white, cream and pastels also work and hide early stains a little better if you plan to rewear the outfit later.
Cotton is the best fabric. It is breathable in the heat, absorbs colour for great photos and does not turn see-through as fast as thin synthetics when wet, especially if you choose a thicker weave. Avoid thin white georgette or chiffon, which becomes transparent with water. Avoid silk, which stains permanently and is uncomfortable when soaked.
Outfit ideas for every kind of Holi party
Society or family Holi: a white cotton kurta with churidar or palazzos and an old dupatta tied around the neck is traditional and comfortable. A white chikankari kurta looks especially pretty in photos, though it may not survive the colours, so choose an inexpensive one.
Ticketed DJ Holi or rain dance: a white tee or crop top with denim shorts, cycling shorts or joggers lets you dance and move. Add a bandana or a cap. A white cotton co-ord with shorts is also popular. Choose dark, opaque innerwear rather than light, since white fabrics become sheer when soaked.
Pool or farmhouse Holi: wear a swimsuit under a white tee and shorts, so you can play colours and then jump in. Carry a dry change of clothes and a towel.
Matching white outfits with friends make for stunning group photos once the colours start flying. Many groups coordinate white kurtas with colourful dupattas, or white tees with matching bandanas, so the group is recognisable in the crowd. Holi-themed tees with fun slogans are also popular for ticketed events and are inexpensive enough to wear once.
Prepping your skin and hair
Prep is as important as the outfit. Apply a thick layer of coconut oil, mustard oil or a heavy moisturiser on your face, arms, neck, ears and behind the ears. It creates a barrier so colour washes off more easily. Apply a waterproof sunscreen underneath, because you will be in the sun for hours.
Oil your hair generously from roots to ends and tie it in a tight braid or bun. Cover it with a bandana, a scarf or a cap. Apply a dark nail polish or a clear coat to protect your nails from staining. Use a lip balm with SPF and avoid heavy makeup, which mixes with colour and clogs pores.
Footwear, accessories and phone safety
Wear old sneakers, rubber flip-flops or sports sandals with good grip. Ground gets slippery with water and colour. Avoid heels, suede, leather and new shoes. If you are at a rain dance, closed sports sandals protect your toes from being stepped on.
Skip expensive jewellery and watches. A simple pair of oxidised studs or a fabric hair band is enough. Sunglasses protect your eyes from colour and sun. Keep your phone in a waterproof pouch hung around your neck, and carry a small waterproof bag for cash and keys. Leave your nice handbag at home.
A pair of sunglasses with plastic frames is ideal, as colour and water can damage metal frames and expensive lenses. If you wear spectacles, bring an old pair or use a cord to keep them on. Skip contact lenses entirely, since colour powder can get trapped behind the lens and irritate your eyes. A small waterproof pouch for cash, a few tissues and lip balm is all you need to carry.
Body type and comfort
Comfort comes first at Holi, but the right cut still helps. Pear shapes can choose a long straight kurta with leggings or a loose tee with joggers. Apple shapes are comfortable in A-line kurtas or relaxed tees with shorts. Petite women look balanced in shorter kurtas with ankle-length leggings, while tall women can carry long kurtas and palazzos.
Curvy women may prefer thicker cotton and a sports bra for support while dancing and running. Choose fits that are relaxed but not so loose that they drag when wet, since soaked fabric gets heavy. A drawstring waist is better than a button that can break.
If you plan to dance under sprinklers for a long time, bring a dry layer for afterwards, as wet cotton can feel cold once the sun goes down, especially in Delhi and the north in early March. A dry tee and a light jacket in your bag make the drive home far more comfortable.
Holi party mistakes to avoid
Avoid thin white synthetic fabrics that become see-through, light innerwear under white clothes, silk and expensive outfits, contact lenses, heavy makeup and new shoes. Do not leave your skin and hair unprotected, and do not forget a change of clothes and an old towel for the drive home.
Choose natural or herbal colours if you are hosting, and respect people who do not want to be coloured. White kurtas and cotton tees start from about ₹299 online, so you can buy an inexpensive Holi outfit rather than sacrificing a good one.
Holi outfit ideas by city and weather
Holi usually falls in March, but the weather varies a lot across India. In Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow and the north, mornings can still be cool, especially if you get soaked with water. A cotton kurta with full sleeves and leggings, or a white tee with a light white shirt on top, keeps you warm early and can be shed as the day heats up.
In Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, it is already warm and sunny by March. Choose breathable cotton tees, sleeveless kurtas over leggings and cotton shorts. Hydration and sunscreen are essential, since you will be outdoors for hours. In Bengaluru and Chennai, Holi parties are often at clubs and resorts, with pool and rain dance setups, so pack a swimsuit and a dry change.
In Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana, where Holi celebrations are famous and very crowded, choose modest full-coverage cotton outfits, closed shoes and a cross-body bag kept close to your body. Cover your head with a scarf to protect your hair and keep your phone in a waterproof pouch. Respect local customs and temple rules, and follow the guidance of local organisers.
After the party: washing off colour
Rinse your skin with cool water first, then use a mild cleanser. Avoid scrubbing hard, which irritates skin. A paste of besan and curd or a gentle oil cleanser helps lift stubborn colour. Moisturise well afterwards.
For hair, rinse thoroughly with water, then shampoo twice with a mild shampoo and condition deeply. For clothes, soak in cold water with detergent, and wash separately from other laundry. Some colours will stay, and that is part of the fun; many people keep their Holi kurta as a souvenir for next year.
