Where to apply perfume, in one line

Apply perfume to warm, slightly protected spots: the base of the throat, behind the ears, the back of the neck, the chest and the inside of the elbows. These areas warm the fragrance so it rises gently towards you and those near you, without being wiped off every time you wash your hands. Wrists work too, but they lose scent quickly because of handwashing.

Placement changes how a perfume behaves. The same three sprays can feel intimate, office-friendly or loud depending on where they land. Knowing the map of your body lets you control projection rather than leaving it to chance.

What a pulse point actually does

Pulse points are places where blood vessels run close to the surface. They are a little warmer than surrounding skin, and warmth speeds the gentle evaporation that carries fragrance into the air. That is why a scent on the neck often feels more alive than one on the forearm.

Warmth is a double-edged sword in India. On a humid afternoon, a pulse point that is exposed to sun can burn through the top and heart notes quickly. The trick is to balance warm spots with covered ones, so some of your fragrance projects while some sits quietly under fabric and lasts.

Skin type matters here too. Areas with a little natural oil, like the chest and behind the ears, tend to hold fragrance better than very dry areas like the backs of the hands.

It also helps to think of the body in zones. The upper body, from the chest to the ears, is the projection zone, where scent rises into the air you and others breathe. The lower body and clothing are the longevity zone, where scent lingers quietly. Most good routines use one or two spots from each.

Back of the neck, under the hair: protected from sun, warm, and it releases scent each time you move your head. It is ideal for long days and works well with a low bun or plait.

Chest and sternum: covered by a kurta, blouse or shirt, so it lasts well and releases scent through the neckline as your body warms. This is the best single spot for office wear.

Inside of the elbows: a lovely spot when you wear sleeveless or short-sleeved outfits, because the scent moves as you gesture. It is less exposed to washing than the wrists.

Upper back and shoulders: often overlooked, but if you wear a blouse or a top with a back opening, a mist here creates a soft trail that others notice when you walk past. It is protected from handwashing and slow to sweat off in air-conditioned rooms.

Spots that look good on paper but disappoint

Wrists are the most common choice and often the most disappointing. You wash your hands many times a day, type on keyboards and touch surfaces, and each action strips a little fragrance away. If you love the ritual of a wrist spray, keep it to one wrist and pair it with a neck or chest spray.

Behind the knees and ankles are often recommended because scent rises. They work for evening wear with a dress, but in a saree or salwar with closed footwear, they mostly scent your clothing and floor rather than the air around you.

Avoid spraying directly into the face, eyes or freshly shaved or waxed areas. Alcohol can sting broken skin, and some fragrance materials can irritate sensitive areas. Never spray on rashes, cuts or sunburnt skin.

The face itself is also best avoided. Spraying on the cheeks or near the hairline risks contact with eyes and can interact with skincare and sunscreen in unpredictable ways, sometimes causing irritation or pigmentation when exposed to sunlight.

Placement by outfit

Saree: one spray at the back of the neck, one on the chest under the blouse line and a light mist on the inner pallu from a distance. The pallu moves with you and leaves a soft trail. Test on an inside fold first if the silk is delicate.

Office shirt or kurta: chest and back of the neck only. This keeps projection modest in shared spaces and avoids leaving a heavy scent on your keyboard or files.

Evening dress: base of the throat, inside elbows and a single spray behind the knees. Pair it with a clutch atomiser for one refresh later in the night.

Lehenga or heavy festive wear: spray the chest and back of the neck before you dress, then a fine mist on the inner dupatta once you are ready. Heavy embroidery and zari should be kept out of the spray path, so aim at plain fabric only.

Gym or yoga wear: skip perfume on skin entirely, or use a single spray of a fresh scent on the back of the neck after your session. Fragrance and sweat during exercise rarely smell pleasant together.

Hair and clothing as bonus placements

Hair holds scent beautifully and releases it with movement, but alcohol can dry the strands. Spray your brush and run it through, or use a dedicated hair mist. Avoid spraying straight onto hair that is already dry or chemically treated.

Fabric does not sweat and does not absorb oils the way skin does, so a mist on a dupatta, scarf or coat lining can last a day or more. The scent on fabric often stays truer to the top and heart notes, while skin develops the base. Using both gives you a fuller picture of the perfume.

A useful trick for open hair is to spray a little perfume on the inside of a hair tie or scrunchie. Every time you tie and untie your hair through the day, you release a small burst of scent without the alcohol touching the strands.

How to spray properly

Hold the bottle about 15 to 20 centimetres away so the mist spreads evenly instead of pooling. A pooled spot evaporates slowly at first and then can smell sharp from concentrated alcohol.

Do not rub. Let each spray dry on its own for a minute before dressing. Rubbing heats the skin and crushes the delicate opening notes, and dressing too soon can transfer oils onto fabric before they settle.

Apply perfume after body lotion and before jewellery. Alcohol and fragrance oils can dull pearls, affect some gemstones and leave residue on gold and silver over time, so let the perfume dry first and then put on your necklace and earrings.

If you wear a bindi, kajal or other makeup, finish your fragrance before you do your face, or shield your face with your hand while misting the neck. Alcohol can disturb freshly set makeup.
