The fix is simple: moisturise the areas you spray with a fragrance-free lotion or balm right after a shower. This one change often adds hours to a perfume's life.

Exfoliation helps too. Flaky skin scatters fragrance unevenly and sheds it as tiny flakes come away. A gentle weekly scrub followed by lotion gives perfume a smooth, receptive surface.

Interestingly, people with naturally oily skin sometimes find the opposite issue: perfume lasts very long but certain notes, especially sweet ones, become heavier. If that sounds like you, lighter compositions may suit you better.

Is it the perfume, not you?

Sometimes the problem is the bottle. Light concentrations such as eau de cologne and many eau de toilettes are designed to be fleeting. Fresh compositions built around citrus, green notes and aquatic accords are naturally shorter-lived.

Old or poorly stored perfumes lose strength. A bottle kept in a hot bathroom or near a sunny window may have degraded. Perfumes from unreliable sellers may be counterfeit, which often shows as a weak or quickly fading scent.

Buy from authorised retailers or reputable sellers on major platforms, check seller ratings and packaging carefully, and store bottles away from heat and light.

Rotating perfumes, rather than wearing the same one daily, can also reduce the effect, because your nose stays more sensitive to a scent it does not meet every day.
