22K vs 18K gold jewellery: the short answer
Choose 22K gold jewellery when you want deep yellow colour, high gold content and strong exchange value, especially for plain bangles, chains and bridal sets. Choose 18K when your piece carries diamonds or gemstones, when you want a thinner modern design that holds its shape, or when you plan to wear it every single day.
The comparison of 22K vs 18K gold jewellery is really a trade-off between purity and strength. Pure gold is soft, so jewellers mix it with metals such as copper, silver and zinc. The more alloy in the mix, the harder and more scratch resistant the piece becomes, but the less gold you actually own per gram. Neither karat is better in absolute terms. Each is better for a particular job, and once you understand that job, the decision becomes easy.

What the numbers 22K and 18K actually mean
Karat is a measure of purity out of 24 parts. 22K means 22 parts gold and 2 parts other metals, which works out to about 91.6 percent gold. That is why you will see 916 stamped on 22K pieces. 18K means 18 parts gold and 6 parts alloy, or 75 percent gold, marked as 750. Under the BIS hallmarking system both grades are recognised standards, so either can be sold as genuine hallmarked jewellery.
This difference of roughly 16.6 percentage points sounds small, yet it changes the look, feel and value of a piece. A 10 gram 22K chain contains about 9.16 grams of fine gold, while a 10 gram 18K chain contains about 7.5 grams. When you exchange or sell jewellery later, the buyer pays essentially for the fine gold content, so that gap matters for long-term value.
It also helps to know that karat refers only to the gold metal itself, not the weight of the whole piece. A 22K necklace set with kundan, polki or enamel work still has its gold portion graded at 916, while the stones and enamel add to the gross weight. That is why reputable jewellers list gross weight and net gold weight separately. When you compare two pieces across karats, always compare net weight and purity together, because a heavier 18K piece may contain less fine gold than a lighter 22K one.
Colour and look: warm yellow versus softer tones
22K gold has the rich, buttery yellow that most Indian families associate with traditional jewellery. It suits temple designs, antique finishes, Kolkata-style filigree and heavy wedding necklaces worn with silk sarees. Because there is so little alloy, the colour stays close to pure gold.
18K gold is slightly paler, and its higher alloy content allows jewellers to produce yellow, rose and white versions. Rose gold uses more copper, while white gold uses white metals and is usually rhodium plated for a bright finish. If you like minimal, contemporary jewellery that pairs with western wear or office outfits, 18K offers far more colour choice than 22K.
Durability for everyday wear
Softness is the main weakness of 22K gold. Thin chains can stretch, delicate rings can bend out of round, and fine engraving can wear smooth over years of contact with desks, handbags and kitchen counters. That does not mean 22K is fragile in normal use. Plain bangles and thicker chains in 22K are worn daily by millions of women. It means very slim, intricate or stone-heavy designs are better served by a harder alloy.
18K gold resists scratches and dents better and holds prongs firmly. If you type all day, commute in crowded trains, or wear a ring while cooking and doing chores, an 18K band or slim chain usually ages more gracefully. For a mangalsutra you never take off, many buyers pick 18K for the chain and 22K for pendants that do not take much stress.
Body chemistry and climate also play a role. In humid Indian summers, sweat, perfume and lotions can dull the surface of any gold jewellery. Higher karat gold does not tarnish in the usual sense, yet it can look flat until cleaned. 18K alloys contain more copper and silver, so they may develop a faint film in some conditions, which a gentle wash in mild soapy water removes. Neither karat needs special treatment, but a soft cloth and a separate pouch for each piece keep both looking their best for years.
Why diamond and gemstone jewellery is usually 18K
Stones are held in place by prongs, bezels or channels made of metal. If that metal is soft, prongs can lift and a stone can loosen or fall out. This is the main reason most diamond rings, solitaires, studs and tennis bracelets are made in 18K, and some lighter fashion pieces in 14K. The harder alloy grips the stone more securely and keeps settings crisp.
When you see a diamond piece offered in 22K, ask the jeweller how the setting is reinforced and whether they offer free prong checks. Settings in any metal should be inspected once or twice a year, but with 22K that check is especially worthwhile. For coloured gemstones such as emerald and ruby, the same logic applies.
A practical tip for diamond buyers is to look at the setting style as well as the karat. Bezel and channel settings surround the stone with metal and are naturally more secure, while tall four-prong solitaire settings expose more of the diamond and rely heavily on prong strength. If you prefer a high-set solitaire, 18K or 14K with platinum-tipped prongs, where offered, gives extra peace of mind for daily wear.
Price, making charges and resale
Per gram, 22K jewellery costs more than 18K because it contains more gold. However, the final bill also includes making charges, any wastage component, stone charges and GST, so an 18K diamond piece can easily cost more than a plain 22K chain of the same weight. Compare like with like by asking for the gold rate applied, the net weight and the making charge separately.
At resale or exchange, jewellers usually calculate value from the net gold weight and the purity shown on the hallmark, then deduct as per their policy. Since 22K holds more gold, it typically returns more per gram. Exchange and buyback terms vary widely by seller, so read the policy before you buy, particularly if you see the piece as a store of value.
A useful exercise before any big purchase is to ask the jeweller for two quotes on the same design, one in 22K and one in 18K. Look at how the gold value, making charge and stone charges change. Sometimes the saving in 18K is large enough to upgrade the diamond or add a matching pair of earrings. In other cases the difference is small, and the extra gold content of 22K becomes the better deal. Doing this comparison on paper takes ten minutes and often changes the decision.
Which karat for which occasion
For bridal sets, heirloom bangles, coins converted into jewellery and pieces you may pass on, 22K remains the popular choice. For engagement rings, diamond studs, office wear, everyday chains and gifts for younger women who prefer lightweight designs, 18K is the practical pick. If you are buying for a teenager or for someone who loses things often, you might even consider 14K for lower cost per piece.
Think about how often the jewellery will be worn and what it will rub against. A festive necklace worn on Diwali and at weddings can be softer because it spends most of its life in a box. A ring worn 365 days a year needs strength more than purity.
Families often build a collection that mixes both. A bride may receive heavy 22K necklaces and bangles from her family, then choose an 18K diamond engagement ring and lightweight 18K office chains for herself. Over time, the 22K pieces become the stored wealth and heirlooms, while the 18K pieces are the everyday jewellery she actually wears. Thinking of your jewellery box in this way, as a portfolio with different roles, makes each future purchase clearer.
If you are gifting, consider the recipient. Older relatives often appreciate classic 22K designs that match their existing sets, while younger women and working professionals tend to wear modern 18K pieces more often. A gift that gets worn regularly is usually the one remembered most fondly.
Final checklist before you pay
Whichever karat you choose, confirm the BIS hallmark with the purity grade and a six-digit HUID, verify that HUID in the official BIS Care app, and ensure the bill lists gross weight, net weight, purity, making charges and stone value separately. Ask about exchange and buyback rules in writing.
Then decide based on use, not just on the number. 22K gives you more gold and that classic look. 18K gives you strength, colour variety and secure settings. Choosing the right one for the right piece is the smartest way to buy gold jewellery that you will actually wear and love.
