CVD vs HPHT Diamonds: How Lab-Grown Stones Are Made

Published by the Style Desk

CVD vs HPHT diamonds explained simply: how each lab-grown method works, typical colour and inclusion traits, treatments, and whether method matters.

CVD vs HPHT diamonds: the short answer

CVD vs HPHT diamonds comes down to how the crystal is grown. CVD builds a diamond layer by layer from carbon-rich gas in a low-pressure chamber, while HPHT recreates the extreme pressure and heat of the earth's mantle in a press. Both produce real diamonds, and for most buyers the quality of the individual stone matters far more than the method used.

Still, the method leaves fingerprints. It can influence the kind of inclusions you might see, the tints a stone may carry before treatment and how the stone glows under ultraviolet light in a lab. Knowing these traits helps you read a certificate properly and ask sensible questions before paying for a solitaire, studs or a tennis bracelet.

This explainer walks through each process in simple steps, covers post-growth treatments, and ends with a practical view on whether you should insist on one or the other when shopping in India.

How chemical vapour deposition works

CVD starts with thin, flat slices of diamond called seed plates. These sit inside a vacuum chamber that is filled with a mix of gases, usually methane as the carbon source and hydrogen. Microwave or other energy turns the gas into a glowing plasma, which frees carbon atoms that settle onto the seed and continue its crystal pattern.

Growth happens slowly, a fraction of a millimetre at a time, and many seeds can grow together in one run. The result is a tabular block of rough diamond with a characteristic square-ish shape. Cutters then plan the most efficient shapes from the block, which is one reason fancy shapes like emeralds and cushions are common in CVD output.

Because CVD runs at relatively low pressure, growers can fine-tune conditions in real time. However, growth can introduce strain and brownish tints, and many CVD stones are given a post-growth treatment to improve colour. Reputable reports usually note this with wording that the stone has been treated to change colour or that post-growth treatment was detected.

How high pressure, high temperature growth works

HPHT growth uses large presses, often cubic or belt designs, to squeeze a capsule containing a diamond seed, a carbon source such as graphite and a molten metal solvent. Under pressure and heat comparable to deep earth conditions, carbon dissolves in the metal and crystallises onto the seed as diamond.

HPHT crystals tend to grow in a cuboctahedral shape, quite different from the flat CVD block. Growth can be relatively fast and many HPHT stones emerge with good colour straight from the press. Small melee diamonds used in pave and halo settings are often HPHT grown because the method is efficient at producing many small crystals.

The metal solvent can leave tiny metallic inclusions, which in some stones are visible under magnification and can even make the stone weakly magnetic. Trace boron can give a faint blue tint, while nitrogen can cause yellow. Good growers control these impurities closely, and the grading report will reflect the final colour and clarity.

Post-growth treatments and why they are normal

Many lab-grown diamonds receive a treatment after growth. The most common is an HPHT annealing step applied to CVD stones to reduce brown tints and make them look whiter. This uses heat and pressure, not coatings, and the improved colour is considered permanent under normal wear and cleaning.

Treatment is not a scandal, but it must be disclosed. Laboratories such as IGI and GIA typically note detected treatments on lab-grown reports. When comparing two stones of the same grade, an untreated one is not automatically superior, but some buyers prefer as-grown stones and growers may price them slightly differently.

What you should avoid are surface coatings or fillings marketed as permanent improvements. These are rare in certified lab-grown stones but more common in unbranded or uncertified goods. If a seller cannot tell you whether a stone has been treated, or the paperwork is vague, keep looking.

Telltale traits of each method

In a laboratory, CVD stones may show faint parallel growth striations, specific fluorescence colours such as orange or blue under deep ultraviolet imaging and certain strain patterns under crossed polarisers. These are diagnostic clues for experts and are not usually visible to you at the counter.

HPHT stones may show geometric growth sectors under imaging, metallic flux inclusions, and a phosphorescence that lingers after ultraviolet light is switched off. Again, these are details labs use to identify origin and method, not visual defects that spoil the stone in daily wear.

For a buyer, the visible differences are subtle. You might see a pinpoint or tiny dark inclusion in an HPHT stone, or a slightly cooler tone. You might see a very faint haze or graining in a lower-grade CVD stone. A sharp video of the actual stone is the best way to judge whether any trait affects its beauty.

Does the method affect price?

Not in a fixed, predictable way. Price is driven far more by carat, cut, colour, clarity, shape and brand than by growth method. In some sizes and grades HPHT may be more economical, in others CVD dominates. Market conditions shift quickly, so avoid sellers who insist one method is always premium.

Where method does affect value is when it correlates with treatment or a tint the grade does not fully capture. A colour grade is a range, and two G-colour stones can look slightly different. Compare stones side by side, or ask the seller to show both against a white background in daylight.

Branding also plays a role. Some jewellers market their stones by origin or sustainability story and price accordingly. That premium can be fair if it comes with better cut, design, after-sales service and transparent policies, but it is worth knowing you are paying for those, not for a magic process.

Which should you choose?

For most Indian buyers, the honest answer is: choose the stone, not the method. Set your budget, decide shape and size, then prioritise an excellent cut and a colour and clarity combination that looks clean to your eye. Within your shortlist, the growth method is a minor tiebreaker.

If you prefer untreated stones, ask specifically for as-grown material and read the report comments. If you want a very white stone in a larger size, CVD with post-growth treatment and HPHT stones can both deliver. If you are buying pave or a tennis bracelet, the small stones are likely HPHT, and matching across stones matters more than origin of each.

Most importantly, insist on an independent certificate for centre stones, a clear invoice that says lab-grown and a written exchange or upgrade policy. These protect you far better than any method preference ever will.

Think about how you will wear the piece too. A daily-wear ring for office and commute benefits from a secure setting and a stone with no surface-reaching inclusions, whatever the method. A pair of festive studs for Diwali and family weddings can prioritise size and brightness. A pendant gifted for Karwa Chauth or an anniversary may simply need a clean, white look in a modest size. Matching the stone to the occasion is a far more useful decision than debating CVD against HPHT, and it keeps your budget working where the eye actually notices it.

Quick glossary for your certificate

As-grown means no post-growth treatment was detected. Post-growth treatment or treated means heat or pressure was used to change colour after growth. Type IIa is a purity classification indicating very low nitrogen, common in CVD stones and rare in mined diamonds. Laser inscription refers to the tiny report number on the girdle.

CVD and HPHT may appear in the comments section, along with phrases like laboratory-grown diamond created by chemical vapour deposition. Some reports also mention fluorescence strength. Lab-grown stones can show different fluorescence behaviour from mined ones, but under normal light this rarely changes appearance.

With this vocabulary in hand, you can read any lab-grown report confidently and focus your energy on finding a stone that looks beautiful, fits your budget and comes from a seller with clear, fair policies.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price range of CVD vs HPHT diamonds?+

Our top 20 picks range from ₹5,108 to ₹60,814 on Amazon.in.

Is CVD or HPHT better for an engagement ring?+

Neither is automatically better. A well-cut, eye-clean stone with a colour you like is what matters for an engagement ring. Both CVD and HPHT can produce excellent centre stones. Read the independent report for treatments, check a video of the actual stone and compare cut quality before deciding.

Are treated CVD diamonds less durable?+

HPHT annealing used to improve colour in CVD stones does not weaken the diamond. Hardness and toughness remain those of diamond, and the colour change is considered stable under normal wear, cleaning and jewellery repairs. Disclosure on the report is what matters.

Can a jeweller tell if a stone is CVD or HPHT?+

Not reliably by eye. Gemmological laboratories use spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging and magnification to identify the growth method. The report usually states the method or notes indicators. At the counter, rely on the certificate and its laser inscription rather than a visual opinion.

Why are some HPHT diamonds magnetic?+

HPHT growth uses a molten metal solvent, and tiny metallic inclusions can remain inside some stones. If they are large enough, a strong magnet may attract the stone slightly. It is not harmful, but it is one way labs and some testers flag HPHT origin.

Does the growth method appear on the invoice?+

Often it does not, but it typically appears on the independent laboratory report. Ask the seller for the report number, verify it online with the lab and keep a copy with your invoice for insurance, exchange or resale conversations later. Many labs list the method in the comments section.
