What are lab-grown diamonds, in one paragraph
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds made of crystallised carbon, grown in a controlled facility instead of being mined from the earth. They share the same atomic structure, hardness and sparkle as mined diamonds, and a trained gemmologist cannot separate them by eye. The difference is origin, and origin is what drives the very different price tags you see in Indian showrooms and online.
If you are asking what are lab-grown diamonds because a jeweller quoted you a solitaire at a fraction of what you expected, you are not alone. Many Indian women first meet the category while shopping for an engagement ring, an anniversary pendant or a pair of everyday studs. This guide explains the basics in plain language so you can judge whether the stone suits your budget, values and style.
Throughout this guide we use the term lab-grown, but you will also see laboratory-grown, lab-created, man-made and cultured on tags. Regulators in many markets prefer that sellers clearly disclose the origin with words like lab-grown or laboratory-created, and you should expect that clarity on any invoice and certificate you receive.

The chemistry: why a grown diamond is still a diamond
A diamond is defined by what it is, not where it came from. It is pure carbon arranged in a tight cubic crystal lattice, which is why it scores 10 on the Mohs hardness scale and bends light so dramatically. A lab-grown stone has that exact lattice. It is not a coating, a glass or a mixture, and it is not a different mineral wearing a diamond costume.
This is the key point separating lab-grown diamonds from simulants. Cubic zirconia is zirconium dioxide, moissanite is silicon carbide and white sapphire is aluminium oxide. These can look similar on a hand, but their chemistry, hardness and optical behaviour differ. A lab-grown diamond, by contrast, has the same refractive index, the same thermal conductivity and the same density as a mined diamond.
Because the material is identical, the same grading language applies. Cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, the familiar 4Cs, describe a lab-grown stone exactly as they describe a natural one. That makes comparison shopping easier, as long as you compare like with like and check that the grade comes from a recognised independent laboratory rather than an in-house tag.
How they are made, briefly
There are two main growing methods. Chemical vapour deposition, usually shortened to CVD, places a thin diamond seed plate in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. Energy breaks the gas apart and carbon atoms settle on the seed layer by layer, building a crystal over several weeks. Many stones in Indian jewellery today are grown this way.
High pressure, high temperature growth, or HPHT, imitates the crushing heat and pressure deep inside the earth. A press squeezes carbon around a seed crystal with a metal solvent until diamond forms. HPHT tends to grow crystals faster and is also used as a treatment to improve the colour of some CVD stones after growth.
Neither method is automatically better for a buyer. Each can produce excellent or mediocre stones, and the final quality depends on the grower's control, how the rough is cut and polished, and whether the stone was treated. The certificate usually mentions the growth method and any post-growth treatment, which is worth reading line by line before you pay.
Lab-grown vs natural: what actually changes
Visually, very little. A well-cut lab-grown round brilliant and a well-cut mined round brilliant of the same grade will look the same in daylight, under office lights or at a wedding sangeet. Durability is identical too, so a lab-grown stone can be worn daily without special worry beyond normal jewellery care.
What changes is price, rarity and resale. Mined diamonds are finite and their supply chain involves exploration, mining and long trading networks, all of which add cost. Lab-grown supply can scale with technology, which has pushed prices down considerably over recent years. That is great for the first purchase but means resale and exchange values are typically much weaker.
There is also an emotional dimension. Some families in India see a mined diamond as an heirloom asset, much like gold. Others prefer the idea of a bigger, cleaner stone within the same budget and are happy to treat it as a beautiful object rather than an investment. Neither view is wrong; you simply need to know which camp you are in before you shop.
Typical quality you will see in the market
Because growers can control conditions, many lab-grown stones sold in jewellery fall in the near-colourless to colourless range and in the very slightly included to very very slightly included clarity bands. That does not mean every stone is flawless. Lab-grown diamonds can still show pinpoints, metallic inclusions from HPHT growth or faint graining from CVD growth.
Colour can be a subtle issue. Some CVD stones grow with a brownish tint and are treated to look whiter, while some HPHT stones can show a faint blue tint because of trace boron. Graders account for this, but it is one reason to view real photos or videos of the actual stone instead of relying on a stock render.
Cut quality varies the most. A stone cut to maximise weight rather than sparkle may look dull even with excellent colour and clarity. For round stones, look for an excellent or ideal cut grade and ask the seller about proportions. For fancy shapes like ovals and pears, ask for a video so you can check for a dark bow-tie across the centre.
Certificates and disclosure
Independent laboratories such as IGI, GIA and SGL issue reports for lab-grown diamonds. These reports generally state that the stone is laboratory-grown, list the 4Cs and measurements, and note the growth method or treatments where identified. Many also laser-inscribe the girdle with a report number and the words lab-grown, which you can verify with a loupe.
Do not treat a report as a guarantee of value or beauty. It is a description of the stone on the day it was graded. Two stones with identical grades can still look different because of finer cut details, fluorescence or tint. Use the certificate to confirm identity and grade, and use your eyes or a high-resolution video to decide whether you like it.
Always check that the report number on your invoice matches the report and the inscription. Most labs let you verify a report online. If a seller offers only a store-issued card without any independent lab, treat the grade as an opinion and adjust what you are willing to pay accordingly.
Who lab-grown diamonds suit best
Lab-grown stones make particular sense for fashion-forward pieces you will wear often: solitaire studs for office days, a tennis bracelet for evenings, a delicate pendant for gifting or a modern mangalsutra. They let you choose a larger or better-graded stone than a mined diamond at the same budget, set in BIS-hallmarked gold or platinum.
They suit buyers who care more about looks than long-term resale and who are comfortable explaining the choice to family. Many younger couples in Indian metros now choose lab-grown engagement rings openly, while some keep mined diamonds for heirloom bridal sets. Mixing both across your jewellery box is perfectly sensible.
If you think of jewellery primarily as a store of value, gold jewellery or mined diamonds with clear exchange policies may sit closer to your goals. Lab-grown is best understood as a beautiful, durable and honest material whose main financial benefit is the lower purchase price, not appreciation.
A quick checklist before you buy
First, confirm in writing that the stone is lab-grown, and ask for the independent lab report number. Second, check the metal: look for the BIS hallmark with HUID on gold and the purity stamp on platinum or silver. Third, ask about the exchange, upgrade and buyback policy, because these typically vary widely between sellers and are often less generous for lab-grown stones.
Fourth, compare the full price breakdown: stone, metal weight, making charges and GST. A low headline price can hide high making charges. Finally, check the return window and insurance options for higher-value pieces. With these steps covered, a lab-grown diamond can be one of the smartest ways to get real diamond sparkle into your everyday wardrobe.
Once you understand the basics, browse widely, shortlist two or three stones, and compare them side by side on the same screen or tray. Your eye will quickly tell you which one has the brightness and fire you want, and the paperwork will tell you whether it is what the seller says it is.
