What 925 sterling silver actually is
925 sterling silver is an alloy made of 92.5 per cent pure silver and 7.5 per cent other metals, usually copper. The number 925 simply means 925 parts of silver in every 1,000 parts of metal, and it is the international standard for silver jewellery that is meant to be worn rather than locked away.
Pure silver, often called fine silver or 999 silver, is beautiful but very soft. A ring made of it would bend out of shape on a crowded metro ride, and the clasp of a chain would wear thin within months. Adding a small share of a harder metal gives the piece enough strength to hold stones, keep its shape and survive daily wear, while keeping the bright white lustre that people love about silver.
That balance is why almost every serious silver jeweller, from heritage houses to modern Indian brands such as GIVA and Palmonas, works mainly in 925. When you see the word sterling on a product page, it should always mean this exact proportion and nothing less.

Why copper is the usual partner metal
Copper has been the traditional alloying metal for centuries because it hardens silver well without changing its colour much. It also melts and casts easily, which helps artisans make fine details such as filigree, milgrain edges and delicate prongs.
The trade-off is that copper is also the reason sterling silver tarnishes faster than fine silver. Copper reacts with sulphur compounds in the air, in sweat and in some cosmetics, forming a dark layer on the surface. Some manufacturers now use small amounts of zinc, germanium or other metals in their alloys to slow tarnish, and these are still 925 sterling as long as the silver content stays at 92.5 per cent. Sellers do not always list the exact recipe, so if tarnish resistance matters to you, ask whether the piece is rhodium plated or made with an anti-tarnish alloy.
It also helps to know that alloy choice affects colour subtly. A traditional copper-rich sterling has a slightly warm white, while some modern alloys look cooler and brighter even before plating. Neither is better; it is a matter of taste and of how much polishing you are willing to do.
Reading the 925 stamp and other marks
Most sterling pieces carry a tiny 925 stamp on the inside of a ring band, on the clasp of a chain or on the back of an earring post. You may also see words like STERLING, STER or SS. These marks are a manufacturer's claim, not an independent test, so treat them as a starting point.
In India, the stronger proof is a BIS hallmark. Silver jewellery hallmarking under the Bureau of Indian Standards covers several purity grades, and a hallmarked piece typically carries the BIS logo, the purity grade such as 925, and an identification code. Hallmarking for silver has been voluntary for a long time, with rules being updated, so not every genuine piece will have it. When a seller offers BIS hallmarked silver, it is a useful sign of accountability.
A third clue is the paperwork. Reputable brands provide an invoice that mentions the metal and purity, and many include a small authenticity card. Keep these safely; they matter if you ever need to exchange, resell or insure the piece.
Fine silver, sterling silver and lower grades compared
Indian buyers see several silver grades. Fine silver at 999 is used mostly for coins, bars and puja articles such as diyas and idols, because these are handled rather than worn. Silver at around 970 to 990 is sometimes used for traditional payal and heavier ethnic pieces in local markets. Sterling at 925 is the global benchmark for jewellery. You will also find 800 or 835 silver in some vintage and imported items.
Lower purity is not automatically bad, but it should be priced accordingly and clearly labelled. The problem arises only when a piece is sold as sterling without actually being 925. If a deal looks too cheap for its weight, ask for the hallmark or a written purity statement before you buy.
How to spot genuine 925 sterling silver when shopping online
Start with the listing. A genuine 925 sterling silver product should state the metal clearly, give the weight in grams for heavier pieces, mention any plating such as rhodium or gold, and explain the return and exchange policy. Vague words like silver tone, silver colour or German silver mean the item is not sterling at all. German silver is actually an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc with no silver in it.
Read reviews for comments about tarnish, colour change or green marks on skin, which can point to brass or base metal under a thin coating. Check whether the brand mentions hallmarking or a purity certificate. Prices for sterling silver jewellery from established brands typically start from about ₹1,500 for small studs and rise to ₹5,000 and beyond for statement necklaces, bracelets and pieces with lab-grown stones or gold plating.
At home, a simple magnet test can help rule out some fakes, because silver is not magnetic. If a magnet grabs the piece firmly, it is likely steel or a magnetic base metal. This test cannot prove purity, though, so it is only a quick filter.
Weight is another quiet indicator. Silver is dense, so a solid sterling cuff or kada feels reassuringly heavy for its size, whereas hollow or plated pieces can feel light. Hollow designs are not necessarily fake, but they dent more easily, so check whether a bangle or chain is solid or hollow before paying for it.
Finally, look at the finishing on the back of the piece. Good sterling jewellery is cleanly polished on the inside of rings, the back of pendants and around clasps. Rough casting marks, visible solder blobs or uneven plating suggest rushed production, whatever the metal.
Why 925 is a smart choice for Indian women
Sterling silver sits in a sweet spot. It looks premium, it is far kinder to the budget than gold or platinum, and it works with both a crisp office shirt and a Banarasi saree. Because the cost of the metal is modest, you can try bolder designs, trend-led shapes and stacking styles without the commitment that a 22K gold piece demands.
It is also a good metal for gifting. A 925 pendant or pair of studs feels personal and lasting, yet does not create the awkwardness of a very expensive present. Many women build a silver wardrobe first, then add gold or diamond pieces for milestones.
Sterling also takes plating well, so the same metal can wear many looks. Rhodium plating gives a cool white shine, gold plating or vermeil gives the warmth of gold for a fraction of the price, and oxidising creates the antique, tribal finish that is so popular with cotton kurtas and handloom sarees.
Caring for sterling silver so it lasts
Sterling silver rewards a little routine. Wear it often, because gentle friction against skin and fabric actually slows tarnish. Put it on after perfume, hairspray and body lotion, and take it off before swimming, cleaning with bleach or visiting a hot spring. Store each piece in a zip pouch or anti-tarnish bag, ideally with a silica gel sachet, especially during the Indian monsoon when humidity speeds up darkening.
For light tarnish, a soft silver polishing cloth is usually enough. Avoid toothpaste and harsh powders on plated or stone-set pieces, as they can scratch or strip the finish. With this care, a well-made 925 piece can stay beautiful for many years and even be passed on.
Where to start your sterling collection
If you are new to sterling silver, begin with versatile basics: a pair of small studs, a fine chain with a simple pendant and a slim band or two for stacking. Then add pieces that reflect your style, such as a statement cuff for weekends or a delicate anklet for festive days.
Browse curated sterling and fine jewellery edits to compare designs, finishes and price points before you decide.
As your collection grows, think about a balance of finishes: a couple of rhodium plated pieces for a polished office look, some unplated sterling for traditional styling and one or two gold vermeil pieces for warmth. Because all of them share the same 925 base, they wear, repair and age in a predictable way.
