Bracelet size guide for women: start with your wrist
To size a bracelet correctly, measure your wrist just above the wrist bone, then add about 1.5 to 2 cm for a chain or tennis bracelet, depending on how loose you like it. Bangles and kadas are different: they must pass over the widest part of your hand, so they are sized by inner diameter, not wrist circumference. This bracelet size guide for women covers both, along with the Indian bangle sizes printed on most labels.
Getting it right matters more with fine jewellery than fashion pieces. A diamond tennis bracelet that is too loose slides over the hand and takes knocks against desks and door frames, while one that is too tight strains the clasp and links.

How to measure your wrist at home
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your wrist just above the bony bump on the outer side, where a watch would sit. Keep the tape snug against the skin but not pressing in. If you only have a strip of paper or a piece of string, wrap it, mark where it meets, then lay it flat against a ruler.
Measure your dominant wrist if you plan to wear the bracelet there; it is often a few millimetres larger. Measure in the evening rather than right after waking, and avoid measuring straight after a workout or a hot day outdoors when hands may be slightly swollen.
Write the measurement in centimetres and inches. Many Indian sites list bracelet lengths in inches (6.5, 7, 7.5 inches) while international brands sometimes use centimetres, and it is easy to mix them up when ordering in a hurry.
Chain and tennis bracelet lengths
For a chain bracelet, add roughly 1.3 cm (about half an inch) to your wrist measurement for a close fit, 2 cm for a comfortable everyday fit and 2.5 cm or more for a loose, drapey look. Most women with a 15 to 16 cm wrist find a 17 to 18 cm bracelet comfortable, which is why 7 inches is such a common standard length.
Tennis bracelets deserve a closer fit than plain chains. Each link carries a stone, so the bracelet is less flexible and a loose fit lets it flip, exposing the setting and the clasp to wear. Around 1 to 1.5 cm of ease is usually ideal. Look for a box clasp with a secondary safety catch, and ask whether a link can be removed or added later; many jewellers can adjust a tennis bracelet, though it costs more than shortening a plain chain.
Adjustable chain bracelets with a slider bead or extender loop are forgiving gifts if you are guessing. Thin extender chains add perhaps 2 to 3 cm, but remember they are also the most delicate part of the piece.
Indian bangle sizes explained
Indian bangle sizes are written in a traditional format such as 2-2, 2-4, 2-6, 2-8 and 2-10. These numbers refer to inches and sixteenths of an inch of inner diameter: 2-4 means 2 and 4/16 inches, which works out to roughly 2.25 inches or about 57 mm. Commonly cited approximate inner diameters are 2-2 at about 54 mm, 2-4 at about 57 mm, 2-6 at about 60 mm, 2-8 at about 64 mm and 2-10 at about 67 mm. Brands vary slightly, so always check the seller's own chart.
Most adult Indian women wear between 2-4 and 2-8. The best way to find yours is to take a bangle that already slips over your hand comfortably and measure its inner diameter across the widest point with a ruler. If you have no bangle, bring your thumb and little finger together as if putting on a bangle, then measure around the widest part of the hand with a tape. Divide that circumference by 3.14 to estimate the diameter you need.
Gold bangles are often worn in sets, and a fractionally larger size makes stacking easier and reduces scratching between them. For a single statement bangle, a closer fit looks neater and stays in place.
Kadas, cuffs and openable bangles
A solid kada must clear the hand like a bangle, so use the same inner diameter method. Because kadas are heavier, a slightly closer fit prevents them from banging against the wrist bone. Oval kadas sit more comfortably than perfectly round ones because wrists are oval; if the design allows, choose the oval shape.
Openable bangles with a screw or hinge clasp are sized more like bracelets, because they do not need to pass over the hand. Measure your wrist circumference and compare it with the inner circumference stated by the seller, leaving about 1 cm of ease. This is a good choice for anyone with large knuckles or arthritis.
Cuffs have an opening at the back and can be flexed slightly, but repeatedly bending a gold cuff to adjust it work-hardens the metal and can eventually crack it. Gently squeeze it to fit once, then leave it. Never pull a cuff open sideways over the wrist; roll it on at the narrow part instead.
Fit by style and occasion
For office wear, a close-fitting chain or a slim openable bangle stays out of the way of a keyboard. For festive evenings, looser chains and stacked bangles move more and catch the light. If you wear a watch, choose bracelets that sit slightly looser than the watch strap on the same wrist, or wear them on the opposite arm to avoid scratching the watch case and the gold.
Charm bracelets need extra room because charms take up space inside the circle; add an extra 0.5 cm or so. Thick curb and link bracelets also need more ease than fine chains, since the links themselves occupy part of the inner circumference.
Common sizing mistakes and how to avoid them
The most frequent mistake is ordering a bracelet in your exact wrist measurement. A 15 cm chain on a 15 cm wrist will pinch the skin, press the clasp into the wrist bone and wear the links faster. Always add ease. The second mistake is the reverse with bangles: buying a size that fits your wrist rather than your hand, then finding it will not go on at all. Remember that a bangle has to travel over the knuckles first.
A third mistake is measuring with a rigid metal tape or a stiff cable, which does not follow the oval of the wrist and adds a few millimetres. Use a cloth tape or paper strip. If you get two different readings, take the larger one for bracelets and recheck with an existing bangle for kadas.
Finally, people forget that weight changes the fit. A heavy curb bracelet or a thick gold kada hangs lower and feels looser than a fine chain of the same length. If you are moving from delicate pieces to something substantial, consider reducing the length slightly so the weight does not slide down onto the back of the hand.
For children and teenagers, avoid buying fine gold bracelets with lots of room to grow into. A loose bracelet on an active child is easily caught and lost. Choose an adjustable chain or an openable bangle that can be widened later, and recheck the fit every few months.
If you have had a bracelet professionally shortened before, keep the removed links in a labelled pouch. If your wrist changes, or you want to pass the piece to someone else, the jeweller can add the original links back so the pattern and colour match perfectly, which is far neater than sourcing new links later.
Buying online without guessing
Read whether the listed size is the total length or the inner circumference, and whether it includes the clasp. Check the clasp type: a lobster clasp is secure for chains, a box clasp with safety latch suits tennis bracelets, and a spring ring is common but fiddly with one hand.
If you are buying as a gift, an adjustable chain bracelet or an openable bangle removes most of the risk. Keep the invoice, as resizing and exchange policies vary by seller. For bangles, ask a family member which size she wears; most Indian women know their bangle size, even if they have never measured their wrist.
