Coloured lab-grown diamonds: what they are
Coloured lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in fancy colours such as pink, blue, yellow and green, created by adding trace elements during growth or by treating stones after growth. They let you enjoy colours that are extraordinarily rare and expensive in natural diamonds at a fraction of the price, with the same hardness and brilliance as white diamonds.
Natural fancy colour diamonds are among the rarest gems on earth, and vivid pinks and blues command prices far beyond most budgets. Lab-grown technology has made these colours accessible, opening fun options for engagement rings, cocktail rings, pendants and festive jewellery.
This guide explains how colours are produced, how fancy colour grading works, what treatments to look for and how to style coloured diamonds with Indian and Western wear.
As always, disclosure is key: coloured lab-grown stones should be described clearly as lab-grown and treated where applicable.
In India, coloured stones have deep traditional roots, from rubies and emeralds in bridal sets to navratna jewellery that combines nine gems. Coloured lab-grown diamonds sit comfortably within that love of colour while offering diamond's unmatched hardness, making them practical for rings and earrings worn often.

How colours are created
Yellow diamonds owe their colour to nitrogen. In HPHT growth, controlled nitrogen can produce attractive yellows straight from the press.
Blue diamonds owe their colour to boron. Adding boron during growth creates blue tones, and such stones may be electrically conductive.
Pink and red colours are often produced by post-growth treatments, such as irradiation and annealing, that create specific defects in the crystal. Green can also come from irradiation.
Labs typically note colour origin and treatments on reports.
Green lab-grown diamonds are less common but increasingly available, offering a fresh alternative to emeralds with far greater hardness for daily wear.
Colour can also be adjusted by combining growth and treatment. A stone may be grown with a faint tone and then treated to deepen or shift its hue. This is normal in the coloured lab-grown market and does not make the stone less of a diamond, but it should always be disclosed.
Fancy colour grading
Coloured diamonds are graded on a separate scale describing hue, tone and saturation, with terms such as Fancy Light, Fancy, Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid and Fancy Deep.
Hue is the main colour, such as pink or blue, and modifiers like purplish pink or greenish blue describe secondary tones.
More saturated colours such as Fancy Vivid are generally more prized. Clarity matters less in fancy colours, since colour dominates appearance.
Compare stones graded by the same lab, as descriptions can vary.
Tone and saturation matter more than the label alone. A Fancy Intense pink with a slight brown modifier may look less vibrant than a Fancy pink with a purplish modifier. View photos and videos in daylight to see how the colour actually appears, because names on a report cannot fully capture a hue.
Shape influences colour too. Radiant and cushion cuts tend to concentrate and intensify colour, which is why many coloured diamonds are cut in these shapes. Rounds show more brilliance but can make colour look slightly lighter, while elongated shapes may show deeper colour at the ends.
Treatments and stability
Many coloured lab-grown diamonds are treated, and this should be disclosed. Treatments like irradiation and annealing produce stable colours under normal wear.
Avoid stones with surface coatings, which can wear off. Reputable reports will indicate coatings if detected.
Tell jewellers about treatments before repairs involving heat, as extreme heat can sometimes affect treated colours.
Ask sellers directly about treatment and check the report comments.
If you are unsure what a treatment line means, ask the seller to explain it in simple language. A reputable jeweller will happily walk you through it and confirm that the treatment is standard and stable for that colour.
Styling coloured diamonds
Pink diamonds pair beautifully with rose gold and complement pastel lehengas, sarees and dresses. Blue diamonds look striking in white gold or platinum, suiting evening wear.
Yellow diamonds glow in yellow gold, echoing traditional Indian jewellery tones, and pair well with festive outfits.
Mix coloured and white diamonds for a modern look, such as a pink centre with a white halo.
Coloured diamond studs and pendants make memorable gifts for birthdays and anniversaries.
For office wear, a small coloured stud or a slim pendant adds personality without feeling too dressy, and it pairs easily with both kurtas and formal shirts. Keep larger, more saturated stones for evenings, festivals and celebrations where colour can take centre stage.
For Indian festivities, a yellow lab-grown diamond pendant can echo marigold and haldi tones beautifully, while a pink stone in rose gold complements pastel mehendi outfits. Blue stones suit cocktail evenings and sangeet nights, especially with silver or ivory outfits that let the colour stand out.
Coloured diamonds also work well as accent stones. A thin band of alternating pink and white lab-grown diamonds or a pair of studs with a coloured centre and white halo adds a hint of colour without committing to a bold statement piece.
Buying tips
Request an independent report stating lab-grown origin, colour grade and treatments. View the stone in daylight to check colour.
Decide on saturation preferences; pale colours are subtle, vivid colours make a statement.
Check metal hallmark, making charges and exchange policies, which typically vary by seller.
Compare similar stones to understand price differences.
Budget sensibly by deciding first whether colour or size matters more. A smaller stone with a lively, saturated colour often makes a stronger impression than a larger stone with a weak, washed-out tone. Colour is the star of a fancy diamond, so prioritise it.
Matching coloured stones is harder than matching white ones, because small differences in hue or saturation are obvious side by side. For earrings or multi-stone pieces, ask whether stones were matched for colour and request a photo of the pair together in daylight.
Exchange and resale for coloured lab-grown diamonds are typically even more limited than for white lab-grown stones, since demand is more niche. Buy for enjoyment, and put any concern about future value into choosing a solid, hallmarked metal setting.
Natural fancy colours versus lab-grown
Natural fancy colour diamonds form when rare trace elements or structural changes occur deep in the earth. Only a tiny fraction of mined diamonds show strong natural colour, and vivid pinks, blues and greens are so scarce that they are often sold at auction. Their value lies in that extraordinary rarity.
Lab-grown coloured diamonds recreate the same colour causes, such as nitrogen for yellow and boron for blue, or create colour through controlled treatment. The result is a diamond with genuine colour and diamond's full durability, available in sizes and saturations that would be out of reach in nature.
Because the colour causes can be similar, laboratories carefully test fancy colour stones to determine whether the colour is natural, lab-grown or treated. Reports for coloured lab-grown stones should state the origin and any colour treatment clearly, and that information should appear on your invoice too.
For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple. If you want a coloured diamond for its beauty and personality, lab-grown offers wonderful value. If you want a coloured diamond as a rare collectible, only a certified natural stone fits that purpose.
Keep the report safe, as with white diamonds. Fancy colour descriptions are specific, and having the report on hand makes repairs, insurance and any future exchange much more straightforward.
Wear coloured stones with confidence for both daily and occasional use. Their colour does not fade with sunlight under normal wear, and regular cleaning keeps them bright. A quick professional check each year ensures prongs stay tight and the setting remains secure.
Care and wear
Coloured lab-grown diamonds are as durable as white ones. Clean regularly and store separately.
Avoid extreme heat, especially for treated stones. Have settings checked annually.
Enjoy them for daily wear or special occasions.
Coloured diamonds add personality to any jewellery collection.
