What a cushion cut diamond ring offers
A cushion cut diamond ring features a square or rectangular stone with softly rounded corners and curved sides, like a pillow, giving a romantic, vintage look with strong fire. It sits between a round and a princess: softer than a square, more distinctive than a circle. The main decision is which faceting style you prefer, because cushions vary more than almost any other shape.
Cushion cuts descend from the old mine cut, which was the dominant diamond shape for much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. That heritage gives cushions a natural affinity with heirloom and Victorian-style designs, and they sit beautifully beside traditional Indian jewellery. Modern cutting has added more brilliance while keeping the gentle outline.
Lab-grown cushion cuts are widely available, so you can compare several styles side by side. Learning the vocabulary of cushions before you shop will help you describe exactly what you want and avoid being shown stones that look nothing like the photographs that inspired you.

Antique, modified and crushed ice cushions
Antique or classic cushion cuts have larger facets arranged in a pattern reminiscent of old mine cuts. They show bold, chunky flashes of light and a slightly old-world character. Many collectors love them, but they are less common and can be harder to find in lab-grown form.
Modified cushion brilliants have extra facets on the pavilion, often creating what is called a crushed ice look: a mass of small, glittering sparkles similar to crushed ice in a glass. This style is very bright and can hide inclusions well, but some people find it less crisp than a defined facet pattern.
Hybrid cushions combine elements of both. Because reports usually describe them all simply as cushion brilliant or modified cushion, you need to view the stone on video to know which look you are getting. If possible, compare two or three styles side by side under the same lighting.
Square or elongated: ratio choices
Cushion ratios range from square, around 1.00 to 1.05, to elongated, around 1.15 to 1.30 or more. Square cushions look balanced and traditional. Elongated cushions look slimmer and more modern and lengthen the finger, a flattering choice for shorter or fuller fingers.
Calculate the ratio from the measurements on the report. A slightly rectangular cushion around 1.10 looks soft and natural, while something closer to 1.25 reads clearly as a long cushion, almost like a softened radiant or oval. There is no right answer; try a couple of ratios on your hand.
If you plan to add a halo, which many cushion buyers do, a square cushion in a square halo gives a classic look, while an elongated cushion in a halo looks elegant and very large on the finger.
Colour and clarity for cushions
Cushions tend to retain colour more than rounds, especially in the corners and in deeper stones, so a near-colourless grade may show a faint warmth. In white gold or platinum, many buyers choose G or better for a bright look. In yellow or rose gold, H to J cushions can look warm and vintage rather than yellow.
Crushed ice cushions hide inclusions well, so VS2 or SI1 may look clean. Antique cushions with larger facets show inclusions more, so VS1 or better is safer. Always check the plotting diagram and view the stone in daylight.
With lab-grown stones, higher grades are more accessible, but spend first on a cushion whose faceting style and outline you love. A cushion with a slightly warm colour in an antique yellow gold setting can look more authentically vintage than an icy white stone, and many buyers who start out insisting on a top colour grade change their minds once they see the two side by side on their hand in daylight.
Settings that suit cushion cuts
A four-prong solitaire with claw or double prongs at each corner is the classic choice. Halos are especially popular with cushions; a cushion halo makes the centre look larger and adds vintage glamour. Hidden halos add side sparkle while keeping a clean face-up look.
Three-stone cushion rings with smaller cushions, trapezoids or pears on each side look regal and suit weddings. Vintage-style settings with milgrain edges and engraved shoulders complement antique cushions beautifully. For daily wear, a low cathedral setting or a bezel protects the stone well.
Because the corners are rounded, cushions are less vulnerable to chipping than princess cuts, making them a practical choice for active lifestyles. Still, check that each prong sits squarely on a corner rather than along a curved side, where it can slip with wear.
Metal choices and the vintage look
Yellow gold gives cushions a warm, heirloom feel that pairs wonderfully with Kanjivaram and Banarasi sarees and traditional bridal sets. White gold and platinum make the stone look bright and modern. Rose gold adds softness and suits romantic designs.
Two-tone designs, with white gold prongs on a yellow gold band, keep the stone looking white while showing warmth on the finger. For 14K versus 18K, 14K is harder and better for daily wear; 18K offers richer colour. Gold mounts should carry a BIS hallmark with a HUID.
Milgrain, filigree and engraved details all suit cushions. If you love vintage jewellery, ask whether the seller can add hand engraving inside the band for a personal touch.
Price and certification
Cushion cuts usually cost less per carat than rounds of similar grade, because cutting retains more of the rough. The saving can fund a better colour grade, a halo or a heavier band. Prices still vary by carat, faceting style, colour, clarity, metal and seller.
Ask for an independent report from a laboratory such as IGI, GIA or SGL stating the stone is laboratory-grown, and verify it online. Fancy shapes like cushions typically do not get an overall cut grade, so look at polish, symmetry, table and depth, and view a video.
Request an itemised price breakup showing stone cost, gold weight, making charges and GST, and read return, resize and exchange terms carefully.
Cushion vs round, oval and princess
Compared with a round, a cushion has more personality and a softer square outline, though rounds sparkle more consistently. Compared with an oval, a square cushion looks more traditional and an elongated cushion looks softer at the ends. Compared with a princess, a cushion is gentler and has no sharp corners to protect.
If you want the most sparkle, choose round. If you want maximum finger length, choose oval or elongated cushion. If you want bold geometry, choose princess. If you want romance and vintage charm, choose cushion.
Many brides, whether their style leans contemporary or classic, find that a cushion bridges modern and traditional styles beautifully. It sits comfortably next to a heavy kundan choker on the wedding day and still looks understated enough for a Monday morning meeting. That versatility is one of the strongest arguments for the shape, especially if you want a single ring that works across very different occasions.
Visible size is worth comparing honestly. Some cushions carry more weight in their depth, so a one-carat cushion can face up slightly smaller than a one-carat round. Ask for the millimetre measurements and compare the face-up dimensions, not just the carat figure, when shortlisting stones from different sellers.
Caring for a cushion ring
Clean weekly with warm soapy water and a soft brush, especially under the stone and around halo stones. Have prongs and halo claws checked every six months. Remove the ring for the gym, gardening and heavy chores.
Store it separately in a lined box to avoid scratching other jewellery. With regular care, a cushion cut ring keeps its soft glow and fire for decades and looks lovely in every season of life.
Whether you choose crushed ice sparkle or antique chunky facets, a well-cut cushion is a romantic, practical engagement ring. Cushion halos in particular collect lotion and soap between the small stones, so a gentle soak before family functions or photographs makes a visible difference. White gold cushion settings also need occasional rhodium re-plating to stay bright, which most jewellers offer as a routine service.
