The quick answer on lab-grown diamond vs cubic zirconia
Lab-grown diamond vs cubic zirconia is not a close contest of materials. A lab-grown diamond is real diamond, extremely hard and permanently brilliant, while cubic zirconia is an inexpensive simulant that scratches and clouds over time. CZ costs a tiny fraction of the price, so it suits fashion pieces, while lab-grown suits jewellery you want to wear for decades.
In India, cubic zirconia is commonly sold as American diamond or AD jewellery, popular for bridal sets, sangeet looks and costume pieces. It has a valuable place in a wardrobe. The problem only arises when CZ is sold, intentionally or by careless labelling, as diamond at diamond prices.
Here is how the two compare across appearance, durability, price and value, and how to protect yourself when shopping online.
Think of the two as different tools. CZ is the right answer when you want a dramatic look for one season or one function at minimal cost. Lab-grown is the right answer when you want a piece that will still look crisp after years of commuting, cooking, typing and travelling. Most wardrobes have room for both.

What cubic zirconia is
Cubic zirconia is crystalline zirconium dioxide made in a lab. It was popularised as a diamond simulant because it is colourless, inexpensive and shows lots of sparkle. It has no relation to the gemstone zircon, despite the similar name.
CZ is heavier than diamond, so a CZ stone of the same size weighs more. It is graded informally by makers using terms like AAA or 5A, which describe the maker's own quality tiers rather than independent laboratory grades.
American diamond is simply the Indian trade name for CZ, used widely in fashion and bridal costume jewellery. It is not a type of diamond and should never appear on an invoice as diamond without clear qualification.
Because CZ is so inexpensive, manufacturers can use it in very large sizes and complex designs. That is part of its appeal for Indian bridal costume jewellery, where heavy chokers, maang tikkas and haath phools can be made affordable. The same designs in lab-grown diamond would cost many times more, which is why most lab-grown jewellery tends to be lighter and more contemporary.
Durability: where CZ falls short
CZ sits around 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, compared with 10 for diamond. That sounds close, but the scale is not linear. Everyday dust contains quartz, which is about 7, and over months of wear CZ facets become scuffed and the edges round off.
Scratches and abrasions scatter light, so CZ gradually loses its crispness and looks cloudy. It also tends to attract oil and dirt more readily. A CZ ring worn daily will usually look tired within a couple of years, while a lab-grown diamond keeps its polish.
For occasional wear, such as a heavy bridal choker for one function or a cocktail ring for parties, this matters little. For daily rings and studs, durability is the main reason to step up to lab-grown.
A simple way to see this for yourself is to look at an old AD ring you have worn often. Tilt it under a bright light and you may notice the facet edges look soft and the surface has a faint haze. A diamond worn for the same period would still show crisp junctions between facets.
Sparkle and appearance
New CZ shows a lot of coloured fire, sometimes more than diamond, but slightly less brilliance, giving it a glassy, flashy look. Experienced eyes often notice that CZ looks too perfect and too colourful, particularly in larger sizes.
Lab-grown diamonds have diamond's characteristic white return of light and crisp facet junctions. Under a loupe, diamond facet edges look sharp, while CZ edges can look slightly rounded, especially after wear.
In small pave settings, the difference is harder to see. That is why CZ is common in fashion pave and halos, and why you should check whether accent stones in a diamond-labelled piece are actually diamond.
Colour is another clue. Good CZ is completely colourless, which can actually look slightly unnatural beside diamonds that carry a very faint warmth. Over time, some CZ can also pick up a slight yellow or grey cast from oils and dirt that are hard to remove, whereas a cleaned diamond returns to its original brightness.
Price and value
CZ costs very little, which makes AD jewellery affordable even in elaborate designs. Lab-grown diamonds cost much more than CZ but less than natural diamonds. Finished price for either depends heavily on metal: CZ is often set in brass, silver or plated alloys, while lab-grown is commonly set in hallmarked gold or platinum.
Neither has strong stone resale value. With CZ, the stone has essentially no resale value. With lab-grown, exchange or upgrade programmes may exist, though terms typically vary by seller. Gold or platinum settings retain metal value according to weight and purity.
Think in cost per wear. A lab-grown stud worn daily for ten years can be better value than several CZ pairs replaced as they cloud.
When you compare listings, look at the metal first. A lab-grown stud in 14K or 18K hallmarked gold and a CZ stud in 925 silver are different categories of product, not just different stones. Read the purity stamp, weight and making charges so you are not surprised by what you are paying for.
Spotting CZ sold as diamond
Be cautious if a listing calls stones diamond-like, sparkling diamonds or AD diamond without a laboratory report. Check that the description names the stone material clearly. Very low prices for large diamond solitaires are a warning sign.
A standard diamond tester flags CZ immediately because CZ does not conduct heat like diamond. Any jeweller with a tester can confirm it in seconds. CZ is also noticeably heavier than diamond for its size, though that is hard to judge without scales.
For centre stones, ask for an IGI, GIA or SGL report number and verify it online. Make sure the invoice states lab-grown diamond, carat weight and metal purity. If a seller refuses, choose another seller.
When CZ is the right choice
CZ is excellent for occasion-specific looks: heavy bridal sets worn once or twice, coordinated sangeet jewellery, travel pieces you do not want to risk, and trend pieces you may tire of. It lets you experiment with big designs without financial stress.
It is also handy as a placeholder while you save for a lab-grown or natural stone, or as a travel duplicate of an expensive ring. Some women keep an AD replica of their bridal set for crowded events.
Just treat CZ as costume jewellery: store it separately so it does not scratch, avoid perfume and lotion contact, and expect a limited lifespan.
If you already own AD bridal jewellery from a family wedding, you can extend its life by cleaning it gently with a soft dry cloth after each wear, storing each piece in its own soft pouch and keeping it away from perfume and hairspray. That care will not make it diamond, but it keeps the sparkle longer.
When to choose lab-grown instead
Choose lab-grown for anything you will wear daily, anything you want to last a lifetime, and anything you want certified and insured. Engagement rings, office studs, tennis bracelets and modern mangalsutra pendants are typical examples.
Lab-grown is also the better match if you plan to pair pieces with existing diamond jewellery. CZ beside real diamonds can look slightly different in colour and fire, while lab-grown blends in.
If budget is tight, consider a smaller lab-grown stone with an excellent cut over a big CZ. A well-cut half-carat lab-grown diamond often looks more refined than a much larger simulant.
A good compromise for those who love big looks is to choose a lab-grown centre stone and accept smaller or fewer accent stones, rather than surrounding it with CZ. Mixing CZ accents with a diamond centre can make the piece wear unevenly, as the accents cloud while the centre stays bright.
