Diamond buyback policy: what it really promises
A diamond buyback policy is a seller's promise to purchase jewellery back from you for money, usually at a stated percentage of the current or invoice value, subject to conditions. In India, buyback terms typically vary widely by seller, are generally lower than exchange values, and often treat natural and lab-grown diamonds differently. Before you buy, ask exactly how the gold and the diamond will be valued and get the terms in writing.
Many first-time buyers assume diamonds behave like gold, which has a transparent daily rate and an active resale market across the country. Diamonds do not work that way. Each stone is unique, retail prices include significant margins, and there is no single public diamond rate that every jeweller follows. That is why a buyback policy is often the most practical resale route for an ordinary buyer.
Understanding the mechanics before you pay changes how you think about the purchase. It helps you separate the part of the price you are likely to recover from the part that pays for design, craftsmanship and the pleasure of wearing the piece.

Buyback versus exchange: why the numbers differ
Exchange gives you credit towards another purchase from the same seller, while buyback gives you money. Sellers usually offer a higher percentage on exchange, because they keep your business and earn margin on the new piece. Buyback is a pure cost for them, so the percentage is generally lower, and some sellers apply a lock-in period before buyback becomes available.
If you think you may want to upgrade a solitaire on a future anniversary or trade studs for a bigger pair, exchange may suit you better. If you want the option of turning jewellery into cash later, compare buyback percentages carefully. Either way, the original invoice and certificate are almost always required, so keep them safe from day one.
Some buyers plan to use exchange for a mangalsutra or bridal piece years later, when style preferences change. Knowing whether that seller is likely to still be in business, and whether policies apply across all branches, is part of a sensible decision.
How the gold part is usually valued
For the gold in your piece, most sellers use the prevailing gold rate on the day of buyback, multiplied by the net gold weight and adjusted for purity. Making charges and GST paid at purchase are generally not refunded. Some sellers apply a small deduction to account for melting losses or refining costs.
This is why the invoice breakdown matters. A good invoice lists gross weight, net gold weight, purity such as 18K or 22K, and the BIS hallmark with HUID. With these numbers, you can estimate the gold value yourself on any given day and check whether the seller's offer is in line with their written policy.
Keep in mind that gold prices move up and down. A piece bought when gold was expensive may fetch less in gold value if prices fall, and more if they rise. The diamond part is usually where the bigger difference between purchase price and buyback value appears.
How the diamond part is usually valued
For diamonds, policies often state a percentage of either the invoice value of the diamonds or their current value according to the seller's own price list. The percentage may differ for solitaires and for small diamonds in multi-stone pieces, and certified solitaires may receive better terms than uncertified accent stones.
Natural diamonds in particular can be valued differently depending on the certificate. A widely recognised lab report may make it easier for the seller to re-sell or re-use the stone, which can affect what they are willing to pay. Uncertified or heavily included stones may receive lower offers or be valued only by weight within a quality band.
Ask the seller whether the diamond is re-graded at buyback and whether any damage, such as chips, reduces the value. A short written example from the seller, showing how a piece like yours would be valued today, is more useful than any general promise.
Lab-grown diamonds and buyback
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, but their market prices have historically fallen as production has grown, and many observers expect prices to keep changing. As a result, some sellers do not offer buyback on lab-grown diamonds at all, some offer exchange only, and some offer buyback at specific percentages for a limited period.
If resale value is important to you, read the lab-grown terms carefully and do not assume they mirror natural diamond terms. For many buyers, lab-grown is chosen precisely because it lets them enjoy a larger, better stone at a lower price, with the understanding that it is a purchase for wearing rather than an investment.
That honest framing helps avoid disappointment. If you love a lab-grown solitaire and wear it every day for years, it has delivered its value, regardless of what it might fetch later.
Conditions that commonly apply
Typical conditions include presenting the original invoice and certificate, the piece being in reasonable condition without missing stones, and the buyback being processed at the same brand or seller. Some sellers require the buyer's ID matching the invoice name, and payments above certain values are usually made by bank transfer rather than cash.
Policies may also exclude items bought on special offers, customised designs, or pieces repaired by another jeweller. A ring resized elsewhere might lose eligibility if the seller cannot confirm its original gold weight. If you plan to resize or repair, ask whether it affects buyback before you hand it to anyone else.
Some brands limit buyback to the original purchaser, while others accept the piece from family members with the original paperwork. If you are buying for a daughter or daughter-in-law, ask how she would use the policy in the future.
A worked example of how a buyback offer is built
Imagine an 18K gold pendant with a certified diamond, bought with a detailed invoice. At buyback, the seller first weighs the piece and confirms the net gold weight and purity using the hallmark and their own testing. They multiply that weight by the day's buying rate for 18K gold, which is usually a little below the selling rate, and may subtract a small percentage for melting or refining. That gives the gold component.
Next, they look at the diamond. If the policy promises a stated percentage of the invoice diamond value, they apply it to the figure printed on your bill. If the policy refers to current value, they check their present price list for a stone of that weight, colour and clarity, and apply the percentage to that number instead. Any chips, missing accent stones or damage may reduce the result. The making charges and the GST you paid at purchase typically do not come back in either case.
Add the two components together and you have the offer. Walking through this calculation with the seller before you buy, using the actual numbers on a sample invoice, makes the policy concrete. It also shows you why a piece with heavy making charges and many tiny stones usually returns a smaller share of its original price than a simple solitaire set in plain gold.
Selling outside the original seller
You can also sell diamond jewellery to other jewellers, but offers often focus on gold value, with the diamond valued conservatively or not at all, especially without a recognised certificate. Some buyers try resale platforms or specialist dealers for certified natural solitaires, with varying results.
Get more than one quote, bring all paperwork, and know your gold weight and purity before you walk in. Be cautious of anyone who wants to remove stones privately or test gold in ways that damage the piece. A professional jeweller will weigh, test and explain the offer transparently.
For natural solitaires with strong certificates, the stone itself may attract more interest than the setting. In such cases, asking a trusted jeweller to unset the stone and selling it separately can sometimes improve the result, though it adds cost and effort.
A buyback checklist before you pay
Ask what the buyback percentage is for gold and for diamonds, whether it differs for lab-grown and natural stones, whether there is a lock-in period, and how current value is determined. Confirm which documents you need, whether the policy works at every store and online, and how payment is made.
Save a screenshot of the policy on the purchase date, keep the GST invoice and certificate together, and photograph the piece when new. With that preparation, a diamond buyback policy becomes a useful safety net rather than a source of surprise years later.
Most importantly, buy what you love at a price you are comfortable with. Treat any buyback value as a bonus, not the main reason for the purchase.
