Diamond clarity grades at a glance
Diamond clarity grades explained briefly: they describe how many internal inclusions and surface blemishes a diamond has, and how visible they are under 10x magnification. The scale typically runs FL, IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, then I1, I2 and I3. For most jewellery, a VS2 or carefully chosen SI1 that is eye-clean gives the best value.
Clarity is the C that sounds most important because the words "flawless" and "included" carry emotional weight. In reality, inclusions in higher grades are microscopic and invisible once the stone is set. Understanding where the line of visibility falls is how you avoid paying a premium for perfection that only a gemmologist with a loupe could appreciate.

Diamond clarity grades explained, grade by grade
FL, or flawless, means no inclusions or blemishes are visible to a skilled grader at 10x. IF, internally flawless, allows only minor surface blemishes. VVS1 and VVS2, very very slightly included, have minute inclusions extremely difficult to see even under magnification. VS1 and VS2, very slightly included, have minor inclusions that are difficult to somewhat easy to see at 10x.
SI1 and SI2, slightly included, have inclusions noticeable at 10x, and some SI2 stones show them to the naked eye. I1, I2 and I3, included, have inclusions obvious under magnification that may affect transparency, brilliance or even durability. Each grade is a range, so one VS2 can be cleaner looking than another; the location of an inclusion matters as much as the grade.
Types of inclusions you will see on a certificate
Many grading reports include a plot, which is a map of the diamond with symbols marking inclusions, and a list of key clarity characteristics. Common terms include crystal (a tiny mineral inside the diamond), feather (a small internal fracture), cloud (a cluster of pinpoints), needle, twinning wisp, indented natural and chip.
Reports often state which characteristic determined the grade, so the first item on the list is usually the most important one to look at. If that grade-setting inclusion is small and white and sits near the edge, the stone may look cleaner than its grade suggests. If it is dark and central, the stone may look worse than a neighbour with the same grade.
Not all inclusions are equal. A tiny white crystal under a side facet is harmless. A dark crystal right under the table is more visible. A feather that reaches the surface near a prong or girdle could, in rare cases, become a weak point if the stone is knocked. Clouds can occasionally make a stone look hazy. When you read the plot, look for the size, colour and location of the main inclusions rather than counting symbols.
Lab-grown diamond clarity: same scale, different features
Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the same clarity scale. Their inclusions can look different from those in mined stones; for example, some stones grown by high pressure high temperature methods can contain tiny metallic inclusions, and some CVD-grown stones may show particular growth features. These are identified by the lab and simply graded like any other inclusion.
Because lab-grown stones are priced lower, many are offered at VVS or VS grades. That is a nice option, but the same logic applies: there is no visible difference between VVS1 and VS2 once set if both are eye-clean. Spend where the eye can see, such as cut and size. A practical lab-grown target for many buyers is VS1 or VS2 with an Excellent cut, which usually looks spotless while leaving room in the budget for a better gold setting.
The eye-clean idea and why it saves money
Eye-clean means no inclusions are visible to the naked eye from the top at a normal viewing distance. It is not an official grade, so two sellers may use the term differently. In general, VS1 and VS2 stones are almost always eye-clean, many SI1 stones are, and some SI2 stones can be, depending on size, shape and where the inclusions sit.
The savings between VVS and a good SI1 can be large, especially for natural diamonds. Ask the seller to confirm in writing that a specific stone is eye-clean, and request a magnified video plus a normal view. If you see a dark spot in the normal-size video, the stone is not eye-clean for you, whatever the grade says.
How shape and size change clarity needs
Brilliant shapes, such as round, oval, cushion, pear and princess, have many small facets that scatter light and help disguise inclusions. Step cuts such as emerald, Asscher and baguette have long open facets like windows, which make inclusions easier to see. For step cuts, buyers often aim for VS1 or higher.
Larger stones show inclusions more readily because everything is magnified by size. A tiny SI1 stud may be perfectly clean to the eye, whereas a two-carat SI1 solitaire might show a feather. Adjust your clarity target upward as size increases, and always judge the actual stone rather than the grade alone.
Clarity in multi-stone and everyday pieces
Tennis bracelets, eternity bands, pavé settings and halo rings use many small diamonds, which are usually described with a combined grade like "SI-IJ" or "VS-GH" rather than individual certificates. Inclusions in such tiny stones are essentially invisible. What matters more is consistent colour across stones and secure setting.
For daily office wear, a durable setting protects any stone regardless of clarity. Consider bezel or six-prong settings for active lifestyles and avoid stones with large feathers near the edge if you are hard on jewellery. Clarity affects beauty, but setting quality affects whether the stone stays put.
A clarity checklist before you pay
Read the clarity grade and the list of key characteristics on the certificate, check the plot to see where inclusions sit, and confirm the stone's report number matches the product page. Ask for a magnified and a normal-size video, and request written confirmation if the seller calls it eye-clean. Avoid stones where a large feather reaches the surface near the girdle.
Then step back and look with your own eyes. Clarity grades are a helpful guide, but the purpose of jewellery is to be enjoyed in daylight, at parties and at weddings, not under a microscope. Nobody at a family function will examine your ring with a loupe, but everyone will notice whether it sparkles. Keep the grading report and invoice together in a safe folder, because both documents help with insurance claims, future exchanges and resale, and they also record exactly which clarity grade you paid for. Choosing an eye-clean stone rather than a flawless one is often the smartest financial decision in diamond buying.
Clarity enhancement and treatments to ask about
Some diamonds are treated to improve their apparent clarity. Two treatments you may hear about are laser drilling, where a tiny channel is drilled to reach a dark inclusion so it can be bleached or dissolved, and fracture filling, where a glass-like substance is introduced into a feather to make it less visible. Fracture-filled stones can look cleaner at first glance, but the filling may be damaged by high heat during jewellery repairs or by some cleaning methods.
Reputable laboratories typically note detectable treatments on the report, and some do not issue standard grading reports for fracture-filled stones at all. That is why reading the comments section of a certificate matters as much as reading the grade. A treated diamond is not a fake, but it should be priced lower than an untreated stone of similar appearance, and you have a right to know about it before you pay.
When buying online, ask the seller directly whether the stone has had any clarity treatment, and keep their answer in writing, such as an email or chat message. Make sure the tax invoice describes the stone in the same way as the certificate. If you later sell or exchange the piece, an honest description on both documents will make the process far smoother.
Also tell any jeweller who repairs or resizes your ring that the stone has been treated, if it has. Many repairs involve a torch, and a careful jeweller will remove the stone or protect it. Following these small steps keeps a reasonably priced, clean-looking diamond beautiful for many years.
