The short answer on diamond cut grades
Diamond cut grades explained simply: they rate how well a diamond's proportions and finish return light to your eye, usually on a scale from Excellent or Ideal down through Very Good, Good, Fair and Poor. An Excellent or Very Good cut is what most buyers should aim for, because cut has a bigger effect on visible beauty than any other grade.
Cut is the only one of the 4Cs that is entirely in human hands. Nature or a growth chamber decides colour, clarity and how much rough material exists, but a cutter decides the angles, the depth and the finish. Cutters face a constant trade-off: keeping more weight raises the carat figure and the price per stone, while cutting for ideal proportions removes more material but produces a brighter diamond. Cut grades exist to tell you which way that trade-off went.

Diamond cut grades explained: what is measured
A cut grade is not about shape. It considers brightness, which is the white light reflected back; fire, which is the scattering of light into rainbow flashes; and scintillation, which is the pattern of light and dark sparkles you see when the stone or the viewer moves. It also looks at physical factors: the weight ratio, which checks whether the stone carries excess weight for its diameter; durability, especially a girdle that is not dangerously thin; and the quality of polish and symmetry.
Graders evaluate these factors together. A diamond might have beautiful angles but a very thick girdle that adds hidden weight, or perfect proportions but poor polish that dulls the surface. The overall cut grade reflects the weakest important factor, which is why a single word on the certificate can summarise a surprisingly detailed assessment of the stone's craftsmanship.
Excellent, Very Good, Good: how big is the difference?
Excellent or Ideal cut stones sit in a narrow band of proportions that return the most light. Very Good stones are slightly outside that band and are often almost indistinguishable to an untrained eye, sometimes at a lower price. Good cut stones show a visible step down in liveliness, particularly in larger sizes, and Fair or Poor stones can look dull, dark in the middle or glassy.
For a solitaire ring or studs where the diamond is the hero, Excellent or a strong Very Good is a sensible target. For small accent stones in a pavé band or a cluster setting, individual cut grades are rarely provided, and the overall sparkle of many tiny stones together matters more. In those pieces, judge the jewellery by video and by the reputation of the maker rather than hunting for a grade that may not exist.
Proportions: table, depth, crown and pavilion
Certificates for round diamonds often list proportion figures such as table percentage, total depth percentage, crown angle and pavilion angle. The table is the large flat facet on top; depth is the height of the stone relative to its width. A stone that is too shallow leaks light through the bottom and can show a "fish-eye" reflection of its girdle; one that is too deep looks smaller and darker than its weight suggests.
You do not need to memorise ideal numbers, and different laboratories and experts publish slightly different preferred ranges. What helps is comparing: if two stones of similar weight are both Excellent, the one with balanced proportions and a larger face-up diameter will usually look more impressive. If something seems unusual, such as a very deep stone or a very thick girdle, ask the seller to explain it before buying.
Polish and symmetry: the finishing grades
Polish describes how smooth the facet surfaces are, and symmetry describes how precisely the facets line up and meet. Both are usually graded separately on certificates with words like Excellent, Very Good and Good. Polish lines and slight misalignments are typically microscopic, but at lower grades they can soften sparkle or make the facet pattern look uneven.
Some shoppers look for "triple Excellent" stones, meaning Excellent cut, polish and symmetry, often abbreviated as 3EX. This is a reasonable shorthand for craftsmanship on round brilliants, but it is not a guarantee that one stone will look better than another. Two 3EX diamonds can still differ in brightness, so real videos remain important. It is also worth knowing that a Very Good polish or symmetry grade rarely makes a visible difference, so do not reject an otherwise beautiful stone just because one finishing grade is a step below Excellent.
Judging cut on fancy shapes
Ovals, pears, marquise, cushions, emeralds, princess and radiant cuts often do not receive an overall cut grade from laboratories, because ideal proportions vary so much by shape and personal taste. For these, you rely on polish and symmetry grades, the length-to-width ratio, depth percentage and visual inspection.
Watch for the "bow-tie", a dark band across the centre that commonly appears in ovals, pears and marquise shapes. A faint bow-tie is normal, but a strong one makes the stone look as if it has a shadow. Ask for a video that rotates the stone slowly under soft and bright light. If the seller only shows computer-generated images, request footage of the real stone before you commit.
Why cut affects price and perceived size
A well-cut diamond costs more per carat because the cutter sacrificed more rough material to achieve it. However, the result can look larger and whiter than a deeper, heavier stone. In practice, an Excellent cut 0.90 carat stone may face up close to a mediocre 1.00 carat stone, while sparkling noticeably more.
This is especially relevant in India, where many buyers ask for a stone by carat weight because it is easy to say at family gatherings. Shift the question to "how big and bright will it look?" and cut naturally rises to the top. Compare millimetre diameters and videos, not just carat numbers, and you will usually choose a more beautiful diamond for the same money.
Lab-grown diamonds have changed this conversation slightly. Because rough material costs less, some growers can afford to cut for beauty rather than for maximum retained weight, and many lab-grown solitaires carry Excellent cut grades. Still, not every lab-grown stone is cut well, especially in very low price bands, so the same checks on proportions, polish, symmetry and video apply whether the diamond was mined or grown.
A practical cut checklist before you buy
Confirm the cut grade on the grading report for a round stone, and polish and symmetry for any shape. Check that the depth and table look reasonable, ask about the girdle thickness if it is listed as very thick or very thin, and look for a culet described as none or very small. For fancy shapes, ask about bow-tie and length-to-width ratio. Above all, insist on a real video.
Cut quality also influences how the stone looks in your setting. A brilliant, well-cut diamond in a simple four-prong or six-prong setting can outshine a larger, flatter stone in an elaborate mount. Whether you shop lab-grown or natural, prioritising cut is the single choice most likely to make you love your jewellery every day.
Reading cut quality from photos and videos online
Most diamond jewellery in India is now browsed on a phone, so learning to read cut from a screen is a useful skill. In a good video, a well-cut round diamond shows an even, crisp pattern of bright and dark facets across the whole stone, with lively flashes as it turns. Large dull patches, a grey centre, or a ring of reflection near the edge suggest light is escaping.
Be careful with studio lighting. Strong spotlights make almost any diamond sparkle, so ask for footage under softer daylight or ordinary room light too. Some sellers also share light-performance images, such as reflector scope views, where an even pattern indicates strong light return. These are helpful extras, but the plain video remains the most honest test.
Compare stones in the same lighting and on the same platform where possible, because different cameras and screens shift brightness and colour. If you are deciding between two similar diamonds, ask the seller to film them side by side. A trustworthy jeweller will usually agree, and the difference in liveliness between an Excellent and a Good cut often becomes obvious within seconds.
