Diamond depth and table percentage, simply
Diamond depth and table percentage are proportion measurements on a grading report that describe a diamond's shape in profile. Table percentage is the width of the flat top facet divided by the stone's overall width; depth percentage is the stone's height divided by its width. Together they influence how much light the diamond returns, how big it looks face-up, and how lively it sparkles.
These two numbers often appear in small print below the main grades, and many buyers skip them. Yet for round brilliants they help explain why two stones with the same cut grade can look slightly different, and for fancy shapes without a cut grade they are among the most useful clues to quality you will find on the report.
You do not need to be a gemmologist to use them. Knowing roughly what typical ranges look like, and which extremes to question, is enough to make better choices.

Understanding table percentage
The table is the large flat facet on top of the diamond. Its percentage compares its width with the stone's average diameter. A table that is too large can increase brightness, the white light reflected back, but may reduce fire, the coloured flashes. A table that is too small can increase fire but reduce brightness and make the stone look smaller face-up.
For round brilliants, many experts cite a broad range of roughly the mid-50s to around 60 percent as typical for well-performing stones, though different labs and experts publish slightly different preferred ranges. Fancy shapes often have wider acceptable ranges. Treat these numbers as guidelines rather than rules, and confirm with a video.
Table size also changes the character of a stone. Some people love the bold, bright flash of a slightly larger table, while others prefer the colourful fire that a smaller table can bring, particularly under candlelight or the warm lights common at Indian evening functions. There is no single correct answer, which is why seeing the stone in motion matters more than chasing a specific number on the report.
Understanding depth percentage
Depth percentage is the total height of the diamond, from table to culet, divided by its average diameter. For round brilliants, a common guideline is somewhere around 59 to 63 percent, again with variations among experts and labs. Within a sensible range, the stone balances face-up size and light return.
A diamond cut too shallow may look large for its weight but can leak light through the bottom, sometimes showing a "fish-eye", a ring-like reflection of the girdle visible through the table. A diamond cut too deep may hide weight in its belly, look smaller than its carat weight suggests, and appear darker in the centre.
For fancy shapes such as oval, pear and cushion, acceptable depth ranges are wider, and the best numbers depend on the specific shape and the look you prefer.
Crown angle, pavilion angle and girdle
Many reports also list crown angle and pavilion angle. The crown is the upper part of the stone above the girdle; the pavilion is the lower part. These angles determine how light bends and reflects inside the diamond. For round brilliants, the pavilion angle is especially important for brightness, while the crown angle influences fire.
The girdle is the thin edge around the widest part of the stone. Reports describe it with terms like thin, medium, slightly thick or thick. An extremely thin girdle increases the risk of chipping, while an extremely thick girdle adds hidden weight that does not improve appearance. Medium to slightly thick is generally a practical choice.
The culet is the tiny point or facet at the bottom. "None" or "very small" is typical for modern stones. A large culet can show as a visible dot through the table.
How proportions affect face-up size
Two diamonds of the same carat weight can have noticeably different diameters depending on proportions. A stone with a sensible depth spreads its weight across a wider face-up area. A deep stone carries more weight below the girdle, where nobody sees it, so it looks smaller from the top.
This is why depth percentage and millimetre measurements on the certificate matter as much as carat weight. When comparing two one-carat rounds, the one with a larger diameter and balanced depth will usually look bigger on your hand, provided it is not so shallow that it leaks light.
For ovals and pears, the length-to-width ratio from the measurements also changes the look: a higher ratio gives a slimmer, more elongated outline, which some people find more elegant and finger-lengthening.
Proportions in fancy shapes
Fancy shapes rarely receive an overall cut grade, so their proportions matter more for your decision. For ovals, pears and marquise shapes, proportions influence the bow-tie, a dark band across the centre. A faint bow-tie is normal; a strong one can make the stone look shadowed.
For princess cuts and cushions, depth often runs higher than rounds, and corners can carry weight. For emerald and Asscher cuts, the step facets create a hall-of-mirrors effect, and proportions influence how open and clear the stone looks. Because ideal values vary so much, rely on a real video to judge fancy shapes.
Ask the seller about depth, table and length-to-width ratio when comparing fancy shapes, and request footage under different lighting to see how proportions translate into appearance.
Do lab-grown diamonds follow the same proportions?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, and the same optical rules apply. Their proportions are measured and reported the same way. Because rough material costs less, many lab-grown stones are cut for beauty rather than maximum retained weight, and you often see excellent proportions. Still, read the numbers rather than assuming.
Lab-grown rough crystals can have different shapes from mined rough, which sometimes influences how stones are cut, but the finished diamond is judged by the same standards. Excellent cut grades and sensible proportions are widely available in lab-grown diamonds at accessible prices.
A worked comparison of two one-carat rounds
Imagine two round diamonds, each weighing exactly 1.00 carat, with the same colour and clarity. The first has a depth of around 61 percent and a table of around 57 percent, with a medium girdle. The second has a depth of around 65 percent and a table of around 62 percent, with a thick girdle. On paper they sound almost identical, because the headline grades match.
In practice, the first stone will usually face up wider, perhaps a few tenths of a millimetre larger in diameter, and return light more evenly, while the second carries more of its weight underneath and around the edge. The second stone may look smaller and slightly darker in the centre, even though it weighs the same. If both are priced similarly, the first is the better buy.
This is exactly the kind of difference that proportions reveal and that the 4Cs alone hide. You do not need to calculate optical paths; simply compare depth, table, girdle and diameter side by side, and let any unusual figure prompt you to look more carefully at the video before deciding.
Remember that these numbers are an illustration of the logic, not a fixed rule. Some stones outside common ranges still look excellent, which is why the final decision should always rest on how the specific diamond looks.
Using the numbers when you shop
Start with the overall cut grade for round stones; if it is Excellent or Very Good, proportions are probably sensible. Then glance at depth and table for anything unusual, check girdle thickness, and confirm the culet is none or very small. For fancy shapes, look at depth, table, polish, symmetry and length-to-width ratio, and watch for a strong bow-tie.
Finally, do not obsess over decimal points. Many diamonds outside "ideal" ranges still look beautiful, and two stones with identical numbers can look different. Diamond depth and table percentage are tools for spotting extremes and comparing finalists; your own eye on a real video makes the final call.
Keep the certificate with your GST invoice, so these proportion details remain on record for insurance, exchange or resale.
