What a diamond tester can and cannot tell you
A diamond tester is a handheld device that checks whether a stone behaves like diamond, usually by measuring how quickly it conducts heat, and in many models also how it conducts electricity. A basic thermal tester confirms diamond but can be fooled by moissanite, and no simple tester can tell a lab-grown diamond from a natural one. For origin, you need advanced laboratory equipment.
Diamond testers are popular because they are quick, cheap and easy to use at home or at a jewellery counter. They are genuinely useful for screening out common simulants like cubic zirconia and glass. The problem arises when buyers assume a beep proves more than it does, such as natural origin or quality.
Understanding what each type of tester measures helps you use it sensibly and know when to seek a professional opinion instead.

How a thermal diamond tester works
Diamond is an exceptional conductor of heat. A thermal tester has a heated metal tip; when you touch it to a stone, the device measures how fast heat flows away. Diamond pulls heat away very quickly, so the tester lights up or beeps. Cubic zirconia, glass, crystal and most gemstones conduct heat far more slowly and fail the test.
Results depend on technique. The stone should be clean and at room temperature, the tip should touch the stone at a right angle, and you should avoid touching the metal setting. Very small stones can be tricky, and recently cleaned or warm stones may give unreliable readings. Most testers include instructions on calibration and contact pressure. Some ask you to wait a short warm-up period after switching on and to adjust a dial for the room temperature, steps that are easy to skip but make a real difference to accuracy.
Battery level matters too. A weak battery can produce inconsistent readings, so replace batteries before testing anything important.
Why moissanite can fool a basic tester
Moissanite, a silicon carbide gemstone, also conducts heat very well, so a basic thermal tester often reads it as diamond. This is the main weakness of simple testing pens. Moissanite is a legitimate, durable gemstone sold openly as an alternative, but it is much less expensive than diamond and should be clearly described as moissanite.
To separate the two, many testers add an electrical conductivity test. Most moissanite conducts electricity, while most diamonds do not, so a combined thermal and electrical tester can flag moissanite. There are exceptions: some rare natural and lab-grown diamonds, including certain blue diamonds and some HPHT stones, can conduct electricity and may read as moissanite on such devices.
Jewellers also use visual clues. Moissanite is doubly refractive, so facet edges can look doubled under magnification, and it shows strong rainbow fire. These signs help confirm a tester's result.
None of this means moissanite is a bad choice. Many women in India buy moissanite rings and studs knowingly because they love the brilliance and the price. The issue is only disclosure: moissanite should always be described as moissanite on the listing, certificate or quality card, and invoice, so that nobody later mistakes it for diamond during resale, exchange or inheritance.
Lab-grown diamonds and diamond testers
Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds with the same thermal properties as natural diamonds, so they pass thermal diamond testers. A beep tells you the stone is diamond; it does not tell you whether it was mined or grown. Some HPHT lab-grown diamonds may also trigger the electrical test, which can confuse basic multi-testers.
Identifying lab-grown origin requires specialised instruments that analyse features like fluorescence patterns, growth structures and spectroscopic signatures. Laboratories and some jewellers use such screening devices, which are far more advanced than a pen. If origin matters, rely on an independent grading report from a recognised lab.
This is why it is important that every lab-grown diamond is sold with clear disclosure on the listing, certificate and invoice. The tester cannot protect you from mislabelling; documentation and a reputable seller can.
Using a diamond tester at home
If you own a tester, practise on a known diamond first, so you learn how it responds. Clean the stone with mild soap and water, dry it, and let it reach room temperature. Hold the jewellery firmly, touch the tip gently but firmly to the table facet, and avoid contact with metal prongs.
Read the result as a screening step. A pass means the stone is diamond or possibly moissanite on a basic thermal tester. A fail strongly suggests a simulant such as cubic zirconia, but check technique and retest. For anything important, confirm with a professional jeweller or laboratory.
Do not use a diamond tester to grade colour, clarity or cut. Those require trained judgement and controlled lighting, and no handheld device replaces a grading report.
When to get a professional test
Seek professional testing if you are buying a high-value piece from an unfamiliar seller, inheriting jewellery with no paperwork, or noticing discrepancies between a certificate and the stone. Many jewellers will test a stone with professional equipment for a small fee, and gemmological laboratories can issue a full identification report.
Also consider testing before insuring or selling an older piece. A jeweller can confirm the stone type and whether the gold matches its hallmark, and can check prongs and settings while they are at it. Combine the test with the certificate and invoice for the clearest picture.
If your jewellery came with a recognised lab report and laser inscription, a professional can simply match the inscription number to the report, which is often more reliable than any handheld test.
Testing as part of safe online buying
When you buy online, ask the seller to show a laser inscription matching the certificate. On delivery, if you have any doubts, ask a local jeweller to test the stone and view the inscription. Record an unboxing video and keep the packaging until you are satisfied.
If a test suggests a different material from what was sold, contact the seller in writing immediately, with photos and the jeweller's findings, within the return window if possible. A reputable seller will investigate and resolve it. Keep the GST invoice, certificate and correspondence together as evidence.
Remember that return windows are often short, so arrange any independent check promptly after delivery rather than weeks later.
Choosing a diamond tester if you want one
Most people do not need to own a diamond tester; a trusted jeweller can test a stone in minutes. If you buy and sell jewellery regularly, inherit a lot of family pieces, or simply want peace of mind at home, a combined thermal and electrical tester is usually more useful than a basic thermal pen, because it can flag most moissanite as well as common simulants.
Look for a model with clear instructions, a fine tip suitable for small stones, and an audible signal, and practise on known stones before relying on it. Remember that even good consumer testers have limits: they cannot identify lab-grown origin, they may misread some rare diamonds, and they say nothing about colour, clarity or cut. Treat the device as a filter that tells you whether to look closer, not as a certificate.
If you are testing gold as well, keep in mind that a diamond tester does not check metal purity. For gold, the BIS hallmark with its six-digit HUID, verifiable through the BIS Care app, is the reliable reference, and a jeweller's karat meter can confirm purity if you have doubts. Combining a hallmark check, a diamond test and a matching certificate gives a fairly complete picture of a piece.
Diamond tester myths to ignore
The fog test, water test and scratch test are often shared online, but they are unreliable and some can damage jewellery or other surfaces. A diamond's hardness does not mean you should try scratching glass or other stones with it; diamonds can chip if struck at the wrong angle.
Price is not a test either. A suspiciously low price on a "natural" solitaire is a warning sign, but a high price does not guarantee authenticity. The best protection is a combination of reputable sellers, independent certificates, laser inscriptions, proper invoices and, when needed, professional testing.
Used sensibly, a diamond tester is a helpful screening tool. Just remember its limits and lean on documentation for the questions it cannot answer.
