Do lab-grown diamonds pass a diamond tester? The answer
Do lab-grown diamonds pass a diamond tester? Yes, they pass because they are diamond and conduct heat exactly as mined diamonds do. Standard pen-style testers cannot tell lab-grown from natural, and only advanced laboratory instruments or the stone's certificate and inscription reliably reveal origin.
That simple answer leads to two practical questions. First, can a tester be fooled by simulants like moissanite? Second, if testers cannot separate lab-grown from natural, how do you protect yourself when buying a natural diamond or exchanging lab-grown jewellery?
This guide explains how common testers work, what they can and cannot tell you, and the verification steps that actually matter.
This matters in India because many shoppers walk into a local jeweller with a ring bought online and ask for a quick check. The jeweller's tester will say diamond for a lab-grown stone, which is correct, but it says nothing about whether the stone is natural, what its grade is or whether the price was fair. Knowing the limits of the device saves a lot of confusion.

How thermal diamond testers work
Diamond is an exceptional conductor of heat. A thermal tester has a heated metal tip; when touched to a stone, the device measures how quickly heat moves away. Diamond pulls heat away rapidly, so the meter lights up in the diamond zone.
Glass, cubic zirconia, white sapphire and most simulants conduct heat poorly and fail the test. That is why a quick tester check is a useful first screen against CZ or glass passed off as diamond.
Accuracy depends on technique: a clean, dry stone, the tip held perpendicular to a facet, room temperature conditions and a stone large enough to test. Very small melee can be tricky, and touching the metal setting can give false readings.
Most jewellers in Indian markets have thermal or multi-testers at the counter and will check a stone for free or for a nominal fee if you ask politely. It is worth doing for any piece bought from a new seller, especially online, within the return window so that you still have options if something is wrong.
The moissanite problem and multi-testers
Moissanite also conducts heat very well, so simple thermal testers can wrongly flag it as diamond. This caused real confusion when moissanite first became popular.
Multi-testers add an electrical conductivity check. Most diamonds are electrical insulators, while moissanite conducts electricity, so the device can separate them. Some rare natural blue diamonds and certain lab-grown stones containing boron are also electrically conductive and can trigger a moissanite reading.
So even a multi-tester is a screening tool, not a final verdict. Gem labs confirm identity with refractive index, double refraction checks and spectroscopy.
Because of these edge cases, a single unexpected tester result should prompt a second opinion rather than panic. Clean the stone, let it return to room temperature, and ask the jeweller to retest on the table facet. If it still seems off, an independent lab can settle the question with certainty.
Why testers cannot spot lab-grown origin
Lab-grown and natural diamonds have the same thermal and, in most cases, electrical behaviour. A pen-style tester measures properties that are identical, so it cannot distinguish them.
Some advanced handheld and desktop devices now screen for lab-grown origin using ultraviolet fluorescence or spectroscopy. These typically classify stones as natural or refer them for further testing. They are used by jewellers and labs, not usually by consumers.
Full identification happens in gemmological laboratories using techniques like photoluminescence and infrared spectroscopy and deep ultraviolet imaging, which reveal growth patterns and trace elements specific to each origin.
Screening devices are increasingly common at larger jewellers and manufacturing hubs, partly to ensure lab-grown melee does not get mixed into natural parcels. When a jeweller says they screen their diamonds, they usually mean this kind of device rather than the simple pen tester you see at a small counter.
This is also why the trade invested heavily in screening equipment once lab-grown production expanded. Large manufacturers, grading labs and many established jewellers now test parcels routinely so that natural diamonds sold at natural prices are genuinely natural, which in turn protects buyers who never see the testing happen.
What this means when buying lab-grown
When you buy lab-grown, the tester question is mostly about reassurance that you received diamond rather than a simulant. A quick tester check at any jeweller does that. The more important checks are the independent report and the laser inscription.
Match the report number on the girdle with the certificate and the invoice. Verify the report on the lab's website. Make sure the invoice explicitly says lab-grown diamond. These protect you in exchange, insurance and repair situations.
If a seller's stone fails a diamond tester, stop and ask questions. If it passes, that confirms diamond, but not grade, so still rely on the certificate.
If you are buying lab-grown online, the tester is less relevant than the photos and video of the actual stone. Ask for a video under daylight, check the report details, and confirm the seller's return policy covers you if the piece does not match its listing in grade or size.
What this means when buying natural
If you are paying natural diamond prices, a tester pass is not enough, because a lab-grown stone would pass too. Insist on an independent report confirming natural origin for significant stones.
For pave and melee in natural diamond jewellery, ask whether the brand screens small stones for lab-grown mixing. Reputable jewellers typically use screening devices and state that on their certificates.
Mixed parcels are a known industry issue, so buying from established sellers with clear documentation is the best protection.
If you are exchanging a family piece, ask the jeweller to show you the screening result and give you a written description. A transparent jeweller will happily explain whether a stone is natural, lab-grown or simulant and how that affects the exchange value.
Home tests and myths
Fog tests, water tests, newspaper reading tests and scratch tests are unreliable. The fog test can be passed by some simulants; the newspaper test depends on cut; scratch tests can damage your jewellery. Avoid them for decision-making.
Weight-for-size checks can hint at CZ, which is heavier, but they need accurate scales and measurements. UV torches can show fluorescence but cannot reliably identify origin.
The best home check is the paperwork: report, inscription and invoice. Beyond that, ask a trusted jeweller with a proper tester.
Another misconception is that lab-grown diamonds glow strongly under UV light while natural ones do not. Both can fluoresce in various colours or not at all. Short-wave and long-wave reactions are among many signals labs consider, but no single home observation tells you origin with confidence.
Loupe checks are more useful than kitchen tests. With a 10x loupe you can find the laser inscription on the girdle, look for doubled facet edges that suggest moissanite and check whether facet junctions are sharp. It takes practice, but it is safe and tells you more than any water glass.
Practical checklist
Before buying: request the lab report, verify it online and confirm origin on the invoice. After receiving: check the inscription with a loupe and ask any jeweller to run a diamond test if you want peace of mind.
For exchange or resale: keep the original invoice and report together. Some sellers require the certificate to process exchange. For insurance: photograph the piece and store documents digitally.
With these habits, testers become a minor step rather than a source of worry. Your lab-grown diamond will always test as diamond, and your documents will always tell its full story.
Finally, store the digital copies of your report and invoice in an email folder or cloud drive. Paper certificates fade and get lost during house moves, while a digital copy stays available whenever a jeweller, insurer or buyer asks for it.
If a relative or friend wants to check your ring, offer the certificate along with a tester result. Showing both is the clearest way to explain that the stone is diamond and that it was grown in a laboratory.
