Yes, sterling silver tarnishes, and here is why
Sterling silver does tarnish. Silver and the copper in a 925 alloy react with sulphur compounds in the air and on your skin, forming a thin layer of silver sulphide that looks yellow, then brown, then black. The good news is that tarnish sits only on the surface, so it can usually be removed and, with the right habits, largely prevented.
Understanding what speeds up tarnish is the key to keeping your silver bright, especially in Indian conditions where heat, humidity and pollution all play a part.
Tarnish is not a sign of poor quality. Even the finest heirloom silver darkens if it sits exposed to air for long enough. What separates a well-kept collection from a dull one is mostly routine: how pieces are worn, wiped and stored between outings.

What speeds up tarnish in Indian homes
Humidity is the biggest factor. During the monsoon, silver left on a dressing table can darken within weeks, while the same piece stored dry might stay bright for months. Coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi see faster tarnish because of moist, salty air.
Air pollution adds sulphur compounds, which is why silver in busy metro areas often tarnishes faster. Inside the home, gas stoves, rubber bands, some woollens and felt, certain paints and even some cardboard boxes give off sulphur that attacks silver.
Your body matters too. Sweat, which varies with diet, medication and climate, can darken silver quickly for some people and hardly at all for others. Perfumes, hair oils, sunscreen, hairspray and body lotions can also leave films that encourage discolouration.
Seasonal patterns are worth noticing. Many women find that their silver stays bright through the dry winter months in north India, then darkens rapidly once the monsoon arrives. Planning a quick polish and storage check at the start of the rainy season prevents a lot of frustration later.
Even the kitchen has an effect. Cooking with eggs, onions and certain spices releases sulphur compounds, and silver left on a counter or worn while cooking can darken faster. It is a small thing, but taking rings off before cooking also keeps them free of turmeric stains and oil films.
Simple daily habits that prevent tarnish
Wear your silver regularly. It sounds strange, but light friction against skin and clothing polishes the surface and keeps tarnish from building up. Pieces that live in a drawer for months are often the ones that come out darkest.
Make jewellery the last step when getting ready. Apply perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hair products first, let them dry, then put on your silver. Remove pieces before bathing, swimming, exercising heavily or cleaning with bleach, ammonia or toilet cleaners.
After wearing, wipe each piece with a soft, dry cotton or microfibre cloth to remove sweat and oils before storing it. This thirty-second step does more than any chemical cleaner.
If you wear silver for a long festival day, such as a Navratri evening or a family wedding, give it a gentle wipe as soon as you take it off rather than waiting until the next morning. Sweat left overnight on silver, especially in crevices of filigree or jhumkas, is one of the commonest causes of stubborn dark spots.
Storage that keeps silver bright
Air is the enemy, so limit it. Small zip-lock pouches, with as much air pressed out as possible, are cheap and very effective. Anti-tarnish bags and pouches treated with tarnish-absorbing compounds work even better. Many brands ship pieces in such pouches; keep them.
Add a silica gel sachet to your jewellery box, especially from June to September. Some people use anti-tarnish strips, which absorb sulphur and need replacing every few months. Store each piece separately so chains do not tangle and stones do not scratch other pieces.
Avoid storing silver in bathrooms, near kitchens or in wooden cupboards that have been freshly varnished or painted. A dry bedroom drawer is ideal.
Display stands and open trays are lovely to look at, but they expose silver to air constantly. If you like to keep your favourite pieces visible, rotate them, and store the rest sealed. A closed jewellery box lined with anti-tarnish fabric is a good compromise for pieces you wear every week.
Separate silver from rubber, latex and wool in storage. Rubber bands used to bundle chains and old felt-lined boxes are frequent hidden culprits behind sudden heavy tarnish.
Choosing silver that tarnishes less
If you want low maintenance, look for rhodium plated 925 silver. The rhodium coating does not react with sulphur, so the piece stays white and bright much longer. Gold plated silver also resists tarnish while the plating is intact.
Some manufacturers use anti-tarnish alloys that replace part of the copper with metals such as germanium or zinc. These still count as sterling but darken more slowly. Product pages do not always mention the alloy, so ask the seller if this matters to you.
Be aware that oxidised silver is deliberately darkened for an antique look. Do not try to polish it bright, or you will remove the design detail.
Another option is gold vermeil, which is sterling silver with a thicker layer of gold, usually at least 10K purity. It offers warmth and tarnish resistance while still being solid silver underneath, and it is popular in the demi-fine jewellery category for everyday wear.
Finally, consider how you will wear a piece. Silver worn daily against skin tends to stay brighter than silver kept for occasional use, so everyday basics can be unplated while rarely worn pieces benefit most from plating or careful sealed storage.
Removing tarnish safely
For light tarnish, a silver polishing cloth is usually enough. Rub gently in straight lines rather than circles. For slightly heavier tarnish on plain, unplated silver, wash with mild dish soap and lukewarm water, use a very soft brush on crevices, rinse and dry completely.
Avoid toothpaste and baking soda pastes on anything precious; they are abrasive and leave fine scratches. Never use harsh dips on pieces with pearls, opals, turquoise, coral, emeralds or enamel, and be careful with rhodium or gold plated items because strong cleaners can strip the plating.
For heavily tarnished, antique or stone-set pieces, a professional jeweller's cleaning is the safest route.
Commercial silver dips work quickly, but they remove a thin layer of metal each time and can strip oxidised detailing. Use them sparingly, only on plain silver, and always rinse thoroughly afterwards. For regular upkeep, gentle, frequent care beats occasional aggressive cleaning.
Once cleaned, dry the piece completely, paying attention to chain links and clasps where water can hide. Leaving a damp piece in a sealed pouch traps moisture and can make tarnish return faster.
When tarnish is a warning sign
Normal tarnish is a grey or black film that wipes off. If your piece turns your skin green, flakes, or reveals a yellow or red metal underneath, it may not be solid sterling silver at all, but a brass or copper base with a thin silver coating. This is common in very cheap fashion jewellery labelled silver colour or silver tone.
Buying from reputable sellers who clearly state 925 sterling silver, and ideally offer hallmarked pieces, avoids most of these problems.
Similarly, if a piece goes dark extremely quickly despite good storage, it may be a lower-purity alloy than stated. In such cases, a purity check through a recognised hallmarking centre can clarify what you actually own.
Build a low-maintenance silver collection
Choose a mix of rhodium plated everyday pieces, such as studs and pendants, and unplated sterling for traditional styles like payal and oxidised jhumkas. Pair this with good storage and a polishing cloth, and tarnish becomes a minor chore rather than a constant worry.
Explore earrings and pendants that suit everyday wear.
A simple monthly ritual helps: once a month, lay out your silver, wipe each piece, check clasps and stones, replace silica gel and anti-tarnish strips and put everything back in sealed pouches. Ten minutes a month keeps a whole collection looking newly bought.
Remember that every piece in your collection can recover from tarnish. Even a pair of payal that has turned almost black in a forgotten drawer can usually be brought back by a jeweller's cleaning, so do not give up on old silver.
