If you are unsure which style you want, a plain band is the safest decision you can make, because it never dates.

A tapered band narrows gradually towards the stone, creating a graceful line that guides the eye to the diamond and makes it look a little larger. A reverse taper does the opposite, widening towards the head for a bolder, more substantial look that also adds strength where the ring takes the most stress. Tapered bands are especially flattering on shorter fingers, because the narrowing line visually lengthens the hand.

Split shank bands

A split shank divides into two strands as it approaches the head of the ring, creating an open, airy frame around the centre stone. They suit longer fingers and larger stones best. On short or slender fingers, the extra width can overwhelm the hand. Check that the strands are sturdy and well joined where they split, as this junction takes stress every time you grip something. Twisted and infinity bands

Twisted bands wrap two strands around each other like a rope or a vine, often symbolising two lives intertwined. Cathedral and bypass bands

Cathedral bands sweep upwards in two arches that support the head of the ring, rather like the arches of a cathedral. Bypass bands wrap around the stone, with the two ends of the shank passing each other rather than meeting.
