Why choose fancy shape diamond jewellery
Fancy shape diamond jewellery uses any cut other than the round brilliant, such as oval, pear, marquise, emerald, cushion, princess and heart. These shapes often look larger for their carat weight, tend to cost less than rounds of similar quality, and give jewellery a more distinctive personality. The trade-off is that each shape has its own quirks, so you need to judge them by eye rather than relying only on the grading report.
Round brilliants dominate diamond jewellery because they are cut to maximise sparkle and are the most predictable to buy. But many women find them too familiar. A pear drop pendant, a marquise ring or emerald cut studs instantly feel more individual, and in Indian jewellery fancy shapes have a long history in heritage designs, from pear drops on chandbalis to marquise stones in floral motifs.
This guide introduces each popular shape, explains what to look for, how settings and proportions change the look, and how to style fancy shapes in everyday and occasion jewellery.

Oval and pear: elegant and elongating
Oval diamonds are brilliant cuts stretched into an egg shape. They sparkle nearly as much as rounds, look larger for their weight because of their long outline, and make fingers appear slimmer and longer. Ovals are excellent for solitaire rings, pendants and studs, and they suit almost every hand and face shape.
Pear diamonds, or teardrops, combine a rounded end with a point. They look graceful in pendants and drop earrings, where the point naturally faces downward, and in rings, where the point usually faces the fingertip. The pear shape has deep roots in Indian jewellery, appearing in tikkas, chandbalis and necklace drops.
Both shapes can show a bow-tie effect, a dark band across the centre caused by the elongated proportions. A mild bow-tie is normal; a strong one dulls the stone. Look at the diamond face up in daylight before buying, and compare two or three stones side by side.
Marquise and heart: dramatic and romantic
Marquise diamonds are long boat shapes with two pointed ends. They have the largest face of any shape for their carat weight, so a marquise looks significantly bigger than a round of the same weight. They are dramatic in solitaire rings and beautiful in vintage-inspired clusters and floral designs, where several marquises form petals.
Heart shaped diamonds are romantic and symbolic, popular for pendants and gift jewellery. They need excellent cutting to look like a clear heart, with a well defined cleft and symmetrical lobes. Small hearts can lose their outline, so they look best at moderate sizes.
Both shapes have points that are vulnerable to chipping, so look for settings with V-shaped prongs or bezels that protect the tips. Symmetry matters a great deal: uneven wings on a marquise or lopsided lobes on a heart are obvious when worn.
Emerald and asscher: clean step cuts
Emerald cuts are rectangular with cut corners and long, parallel step facets. They produce a hall-of-mirrors effect, with broad flashes of light rather than sparkle. The look is elegant, architectural and timeless, popular for cocktail rings, sophisticated studs and pendants. Asscher cuts are the square version, with a similar step pattern and a vintage, art deco feel.
Because step cuts have large, open facets, they show clarity and colour more clearly than brilliant cuts. Inclusions that would be hidden in an oval can be visible in an emerald cut. Choose higher clarity grades for larger step cuts, and look at the stone closely in daylight.
Step cuts also look smaller than ovals and pears of the same weight, because more weight sits in the depth. Their beauty lies in clarity and elegance rather than size.
Cushion and princess: soft and modern squares
Cushion cuts are square or rectangular with rounded corners and large facets, giving a soft, pillow-like outline and lively, chunky sparkle. They have a vintage romance and are popular in halo rings and studs. Cushions vary widely in faceting style, so two cushions of the same grade can look quite different.
Princess cuts are square brilliants with sharp corners. They sparkle strongly and look crisp and modern in solitaire rings and studs. Their sharp corners are vulnerable, so choose settings with prongs that cover each corner.
Both shapes suit women who want a square outline. Cushions feel softer and more romantic; princess cuts feel sharper and more contemporary. Try both on to see which suits your hand.
Length-to-width ratio and proportions
For elongated shapes such as ovals, pears, marquises and emerald cuts, the length-to-width ratio changes the look dramatically. An oval with a ratio around 1.35 to 1.50 looks classic; a narrower ratio looks more elongated and elegant, while a wider one looks rounder. Pears often look balanced around 1.45 to 1.75, and marquises around 1.75 to 2.25, though personal preference rules.
Ask for the measurements on the certificate and calculate the ratio by dividing the length by the width. Compare stones with different ratios side by side to see what you prefer.
Fancy shapes are not given the same standardised cut grade as round brilliants by many laboratories, so polish and symmetry grades, measurements and your own eye are particularly important. Look for good symmetry, an even outline and minimal bow-tie.
Settings that suit fancy shapes
Points and corners need protection. V-shaped prongs guard the tips of pears, marquises and hearts. Corner prongs protect princess cuts. Bezel settings protect all edges and suit active lifestyles, though they show slightly less of the stone.
Halo settings surround fancy shapes with small diamonds, enhancing their outline and apparent size. East-west settings turn ovals, marquises and emerald cuts horizontally for a modern look. Three stone rings pair a fancy centre with side stones of the same or complementary shapes.
Make sure the setting is aligned straight. A slightly tilted oval or pear is very noticeable, especially in a solitaire ring or a pair of studs, where the eye instantly compares one side with the other. Check alignment from the top and from the side before you accept the piece, and ask the jeweller to correct it if anything looks off.
Price and certification
Fancy shapes generally cost less per carat than round brilliants of comparable grade, partly because cutting rounds wastes more of the rough. Combined with their larger appearance for the weight, this makes fancy shapes excellent value for visual size.
For larger natural stones, ask for a laboratory report from GIA, IGI or SGL listing shape, measurements, colour, clarity, polish and symmetry. Gold should be BIS hallmarked with a HUID code. Ask for itemised pricing and check exchange terms, which typically vary by seller.
Resale and exchange can differ by shape, with rounds usually most liquid. If future exchange matters, ask the jeweller in writing how they value fancy shapes.
Styling fancy shapes
Ovals and pears are versatile and suit office, festive and bridal wear. Marquises and emerald cuts make bolder statements. Cushions and princess cuts suit both modern and vintage styles.
Mix shapes thoughtfully. A pear pendant with round studs, or an emerald cut ring with baguette accents, looks intentional. In Indian jewellery, pear drops and marquise petals appear in chandbalis and necklaces, linking fancy shapes to tradition.
Think about the piece and the wearer together. For earrings, ovals and pears in a drop setting move beautifully and flatter round faces, while emerald cut studs look sharp and polished for office and formal evenings. For pendants, a pear with the point facing down draws the eye along the neckline and suits V necks and sarees particularly well. For rings, an oval or marquise lengthens shorter fingers, while cushions and emerald cuts look generous on longer, slimmer hands.
Gold colour also interacts with shape. Step cuts such as emerald and asscher look crisp in white gold or platinum, which suits their architectural lines. Pears, ovals and marquises look softer and more traditional in yellow gold, which echoes heritage designs. Rose gold flatters cushions and hearts, adding to their romantic feel. If you are building a collection, keeping one or two shapes consistent across rings, studs and a pendant creates a signature look that is recognisably yours.
Choose the shape that reflects your personality, and wear it with confidence.
