The short answer from this fine jewellery polishing guide
The core lesson of any fine jewellery polishing guide is that professional polishing works by removing a thin layer of metal, so it should be done only when needed, usually once every year or two for daily-wear rings and less often for earrings and pendants. Polish too often and you slowly thin bands, soften engraving and wear down the very prongs that hold your stones.
That does not mean polishing is bad. A good refinish removes scratches, brings back lustre and gives a jeweller the chance to inspect the piece closely. The trick is to treat it as a planned service rather than a reflex every time a ring looks dull. Dullness often comes from skin oils, soap film and lotion, which a gentle clean removes without touching the metal at all. This guide focuses on the professional side: what actually happens on the polishing wheel, how to decide whether a piece needs it, which finish to ask for, and how to give a jeweller clear instructions so you get back exactly what you expected.

What actually happens when jewellery is polished
In a workshop, polishing usually happens in stages. First comes a cutting or pre-polish step with a more abrasive compound to level deeper scratches. Then a finer compound on a softer wheel brings up the shine. The jeweller may follow with ultrasonic cleaning and steam to remove compound residue from the back of settings. Each stage removes metal: the coarser the compound and the deeper the scratch, the more is taken away.
For a plain band this loss is small at each visit, but it is cumulative. A comfort-fit band that is polished hard every few months for years can become noticeably thinner, and sharp edges that once looked crisp turn rounded. Engraving, hallmark stamps and the BIS HUID code inside a band can become shallow and harder to read, which matters if you ever need to verify purity or sell. Milgrain beading, fine filigree and hand-engraved patterns are especially vulnerable, because their detail is the surface itself. Ask your jeweller to protect these areas or skip them. Lighter alternatives exist too: a burnishing tool can smooth surface scratches by pushing metal rather than removing it, and many jewellers use it on small marks.
How often to polish different pieces
A practical schedule depends on contact and wear. Rings and bangles worn every day take the most knocks, so a professional polish every twelve to twenty-four months is generally plenty. Bracelets, especially rigid cuffs, fall into a similar range. Pendants, chains and stud earrings rarely touch hard surfaces and may only need a refinish every few years, if at all. Heirloom 22K pieces, temple jewellery and antique-finish sets often should not be machine polished, because their patina and oxidised recesses are part of the design.
A useful test is to ask what is bothering you. If the issue is general dullness, a home clean or a jeweller's ultrasonic and steam clean is enough. If you see a network of fine scratches that catch the light, a light polish will help. If there are deep dents or a gouge, the jeweller may need to fill or reshape before polishing, and that is a repair rather than routine care. Many people find that an annual inspection with polishing only every second year strikes the right balance between appearance and metal preservation.
Matte, brushed, satin or high polish: choosing a finish
Finish is a style choice with practical consequences. High polish is the mirror-bright look most people picture. It shows scratches quickly, but it is also the easiest to restore. Brushed or satin finishes use fine directional lines that soften reflections; they hide light daily scuffs well and suit minimalist bands and men's rings. Matte or sandblasted finishes have a soft, even texture that looks modern and pairs beautifully with lab-grown or natural diamonds set flush.
The catch is that textured finishes change with wear. Over months, the high points of a matte ring rub smooth and develop shiny patches, so it will need re-texturing rather than simple polishing. Some people enjoy that lived-in effect; others want it uniform. You can also combine finishes, such as a brushed band with a polished bevelled edge, which is a lovely way to add contrast to a plain gold ring. When you change a finish, tell the jeweller clearly, because converting a matte ring to high polish removes more metal than refreshing the existing texture, and going back again later is possible but uses metal each time.
Re-rhodium as part of a service schedule
If you own white gold, polishing and rhodium plating usually happen together. Our separate guide covers what rhodium is and why it wears; here the point is planning. A jeweller must polish the surface before plating, because rhodium highlights every scratch underneath. That means each re-plating visit includes some metal removal. If your white gold ring yellows within months, it may make sense to space out plating and accept a slightly warmer tone between visits, rather than re-plating and polishing very frequently.
Build a simple schedule. For a daily-wear white gold ring, many people combine prong inspection, a light polish and re-rhodium roughly once a year, and do a professional clean in between. For earrings and pendants, plating lasts longer, so stretch the interval. If you prefer never to plate, consider platinum, palladium-based alloys or a yellow or rose gold piece next time, since they keep their colour without a coating. Keep a note of each service date and what was done. That record helps you see whether the interval suits your wear, and it helps a new jeweller understand the piece's history.
How to brief a jeweller before polishing
Clear instructions prevent most disappointments. Start by stating the metal and purity, and point out the hallmark and HUID so the jeweller avoids buffing over them. Say exactly which finish you want back: keep it as is, convert to high polish, refresh the satin, or keep a mixed finish with specific areas left untouched. If the piece has engraving, milgrain, filigree, oxidised detailing or meenakari enamel, ask them to protect or avoid those areas. Enamel and some coloured stones can be damaged by heat, compounds or ultrasonic cleaning.
Next, ask what they found. A good jeweller will check prongs, clasps, solder joints and stone security before polishing, and may suggest repairs first. Request that any recommended extra work be quoted before it is done, because charges typically vary by seller and city. Ask whether stones will be removed, and if they are, how they will be matched on return. Photograph the piece beforehand on a plain background, and keep the receipt with a written description. When you collect it, check the finish, the stamps and every stone under daylight before you leave the counter.
Pieces that need extra caution
Some jewellery should never go near a polishing wheel without a conversation first. Gold-plated or vermeil pieces have only a thin layer of gold over silver or base metal, so polishing can strip it. Oxidised silver jhumkas and kundan or polki sets rely on darkened recesses and foil backings that polishing can ruin. Pearls, opals, emeralds and turquoise are softer or more porous and dislike compounds, heat and ultrasonic baths, so a jeweller may polish only the metal by hand.
Antique and family pieces deserve particular care. Wear on an heirloom tells its story, and aggressive polishing can erase maker's marks or soften hand-cut details permanently. Ask for a gentle clean and repair only. Sterling silver behaves differently from gold: tarnish is a surface reaction, so a silver cloth often restores shine without a professional polish at all. When in doubt, ask the jeweller to do the least invasive treatment first. You can always polish more next time, but you cannot put back metal that has been removed.
Making polishing part of long-term ownership
Think about polishing when you buy, not only years later. Bands with a bit more thickness tolerate decades of refinishing better than very thin, delicate styles. Brushed finishes suit people who dislike visible scuffs. Ask the seller whether polishing, cleaning and inspection are included for a period after purchase, since some jewellers offer complimentary services and others charge; terms typically vary, so check before you buy.
Finally, treat a refinish as an occasion rather than a chore. Many Indian families refresh jewellery before Diwali, Dhanteras or a wedding season, and that timing works well, provided you leave a couple of weeks for any repairs that the inspection reveals. A planned visit once a year, a light touch, clear instructions and good records will keep your fine jewellery looking cared for without wearing it away.
