What are gold wastage charges?
Gold wastage charges are an added cost meant to cover gold lost while making jewellery, through cutting, filing, soldering and polishing. They are usually shown as a percentage of the gold weight or value, and in some regions are combined with labour under the label VA, or value addition.
You will see gold wastage charges most often at traditional jewellers, particularly in parts of South India, where VA is a common billing term. Many organised chains have moved to a single making charge. Both systems can be fair; the key is understanding what you are paying in total.
This guide explains how wastage developed, how it appears on a bill, and how to compare it with making charges so you are never confused by the jargon.
Buyers moving from one city to another often notice that billing styles differ. A family used to a single making charge in Delhi or Mumbai may be surprised by VA quotes in Chennai, Hyderabad or Bengaluru, and the reverse is also true. None of these formats is inherently better. They are simply local conventions, and once you translate each one into a total labour percentage, the comparison becomes straightforward.

Why gold is lost during manufacturing
Making jewellery involves melting, casting, drawing wire, cutting sheet, soldering joints, filing edges and polishing surfaces. Small amounts of gold turn into dust, filings or scraps at each step. Workshops recover much of this through careful collection and refining, but some loss is unavoidable.
Historically, goldsmiths charged customers for this expected loss as a percentage of the finished weight. Intricate pieces with many joins and fine details lose more metal than simple castings, so their wastage percentages were higher.
With modern equipment and recovery systems, actual loss is often lower than in the past. That is one reason many jewellers have folded wastage into a combined labour charge rather than listing it separately.
How wastage appears on a bill
A typical traditional bill may show the gold rate, the net weight, a wastage or VA percentage, and then the resulting rupee amount. Sometimes the wastage is applied by adding a notional extra weight of gold at the day's rate, so you pay for, say, slightly more grams than the piece weighs.
Other bills show a making charge and a separate wastage line, while many branded showrooms show only a making charge. All of these approaches lead to the same idea: a price for labour and production on top of the gold in the piece.
Whatever the format, ask for the total of wastage plus making, expressed both in rupees and as a percentage of the gold value. That one number lets you compare any two bills fairly.
Here is a simple way to check a weight-based wastage line. Divide the extra grams charged by the net weight of the piece and multiply by one hundred. That gives you the wastage percentage. Then add the making charge percentage, if any, to get total labour. Doing this quick calculation on your phone helps you understand what the jeweller has quoted and compare it with another shop's VA figure.
VA: value addition explained
Value addition, written as VA, is a combined charge used by many jewellers in South India. It bundles wastage and making into a single percentage applied to the gold value. A VA of a certain percentage on a plain chain will be lower than on a temple necklace, reflecting the difference in craftsmanship.
Some jewellers apply a lower VA on machine-made items and a higher VA on handcrafted antique or bridal collections. You may also see VA quoted as a range for a design category, with the final figure depending on the exact piece.
When a jeweller advertises a VA offer, check whether it applies to all collections or only selected ones, and whether the gold rate used is the same as on regular days.
When choosing between a lower VA on a simple design and a higher VA on an intricate one, think about how often you will wear the piece and whether you value the craftsmanship. A plain chain with low VA is excellent for daily use and value retention. An antique-finish haram with higher VA may be the centrepiece of your wedding look and a family heirloom. Both are valid choices for different reasons.
Is wastage a hidden cost?
Wastage is not hidden if it is shown clearly on the bill. Problems arise only when buyers focus on a low making charge in an advertisement and do not notice a separate wastage percentage added later. Reading the estimate line by line before you agree avoids this surprise.
Ask directly at the start: is there any wastage, VA or other charge besides making charges and GST? A straightforward jeweller will answer clearly and include it in the written estimate.
If one shop's labour total is far higher than others for a similar design, ask what justifies it. It may be superior craftsmanship, a brand warranty or lifetime maintenance. Or it may simply be a higher margin you can negotiate.
It is also reasonable to ask a jeweller how they arrive at their wastage percentage. Some will explain the techniques involved in a particular design and why certain processes lose more metal. Others may simply say it is their standard rate. Either way, the conversation helps you understand the value of the piece and gives you a natural opening to discuss whether there is room to adjust.
Keep the estimate even if you do not buy immediately. It serves as a useful reference when you visit other shops or return later during a festival offer.
Wastage on exchange and old gold
When you exchange old gold, the jeweller usually tests purity and then values the net gold, sometimes after a deduction for melting loss or impurities. This deduction is different from the wastage you paid when buying, but buyers often confuse the two.
Wastage and making charges paid at purchase are generally not refunded on exchange. That is why heavily crafted jewellery with high VA loses more value on exchange than simple pieces. It is the price of craftsmanship, similar to paying for tailoring on a fine saree blouse.
Exchange deductions and policies vary between jewellers. Ask in advance what percentage, if any, they deduct on old gold, and whether it differs for their own hallmarked jewellery versus pieces from other shops.
If you are planning to redesign old jewellery rather than exchange it outright, some jewellers offer job work, where they melt and remake your gold for a labour fee. In such cases, ask how they account for metal loss and whether the finished weight will be lower than the gold you supplied. A clear written agreement on expected loss avoids disputes when you collect the new piece.
How to compare and negotiate
Collect written estimates from two or three jewellers for similar designs, same purity and similar weight. For each, add making, wastage or VA together and divide by the gold value. You now have a clear labour percentage for each quote.
Use these numbers to negotiate politely. Ask whether the jeweller can reduce wastage, waive it entirely, or match a lower total labour cost from another shop. During festivals and wedding seasons, many shops run offers on VA, so timing can help.
Do not accept deals that remove the bill or hallmark in exchange for lower wastage. A transparent invoice is essential for exchange, insurance and peace of mind.
The simple rule to remember
Wastage, VA and making charges are all labels for the same broad thing: the cost of turning raw gold into jewellery. Different jewellers split it differently, but you only need one figure, the total labour cost, to make smart comparisons.
Combine that with a verified BIS HUID hallmark and a fully itemised GST bill, and you can buy confidently from any jeweller, whether a local family shop or a national brand.
Once you are comfortable with these terms, the jargon no longer matters. Whether a shop says wastage, VA, making or labour, you can quickly convert their quote into a single comparable number and focus on what really counts: design, purity and fair value.
