How gold jewellery price is calculated, in one line
The basic formula for how gold jewellery price is calculated is: gold rate for the purity multiplied by net gold weight, plus making charges (and any wastage), plus stone charges, plus applicable GST. Every line on a jeweller's bill fits into one of these parts.
Once you know the formula, you can rebuild any quote on your phone calculator and check whether it adds up. This puts you on equal footing with the jeweller and makes it easy to compare prices across shops and online stores.
Below, we explain each component, show a step-by-step method you can follow without needing live rates, and highlight the common points where bills differ.
This guide does not quote live gold rates, because they change every day and vary by city. Instead, it gives you a method that works on any day, with any rate. Keep the formula handy, and you will be able to evaluate a quote in minutes whether you are at a showroom in your neighbourhood or browsing a brand website late at night.

Step 1: The gold rate for your purity
Jewellers publish a daily rate for different purities, usually per gram or per ten grams, for 24K, 22K and 18K at minimum. The rate for 22K is lower than 24K because it contains less gold, and 18K is lower still. Make sure the rate applied matches the purity marked on your hallmark.
Rates can vary slightly between jewellers and cities on the same day, depending on local taxes, logistics and business decisions. The difference is usually small, but on a heavy wedding set it adds up. Ask which rate is being used and whether it is locked at the time of order.
For pieces being custom made, some jewellers allow you to book the rate with an advance. Read the terms carefully, including what happens if prices fall before delivery.
It is worth checking the rate at more than one jeweller on the same day before a large purchase. You can usually find rates displayed at the store entrance or on the jeweller's website. Note them down along with the time, since some jewellers update rates during the day. This small habit prevents surprises when the final estimate arrives.
Step 2: Gross weight, stone weight and net weight
Gross weight is the total weight of the piece, including any stones, beads, enamel, threads or lac. Net weight is the weight of the gold alone. You should pay the gold rate only on net weight, not gross weight. This distinction matters a great deal on kundan, polki, beaded and stone-studded jewellery.
A good bill shows gross weight, stone weight and net weight separately. For diamond jewellery, stone weight is usually given in carats, while coloured stones and beads may be shown in grams or carats depending on the jeweller.
If a bill shows only one weight, ask whether it is gross or net. Charging gold rates on gross weight inflates the price, so this is one of the most important checks you can make.
Pay special attention to traditional pieces such as hollow bangles filled with lac, temple necklaces with wax backing, or beaded mangalsutras. In these items the non-gold portion can be substantial. A good jeweller will deduct it carefully. If you are unsure, ask how the stone and filler weight was calculated and whether you can see the figures on the scale.
Step 3: Making charges and wastage
Next comes labour. This may be quoted as a percentage of the gold value, a fixed amount per gram, or a flat price per piece. Some jewellers add a separate wastage or VA percentage. Add these together to get the total labour cost.
Labour varies with design. Machine chains and plain bangles carry lower charges, while handcrafted temple, antique, filigree and bridal designs carry higher ones. Branded collections may use flat pricing, which can look high on light pieces.
For comparison, express the labour as a percentage of the gold value. This lets you compare a per-gram quote from one shop with a percentage quote from another on equal terms.
Step 4: Stone charges and certification
Diamonds, gemstones, pearls and polki are priced separately from gold. Diamonds are typically priced per carat based on characteristics such as cut, colour and clarity, and may come with a grading report from a gem laboratory. Coloured stones vary widely by type and quality.
Ask for the stone weight, the quality description and the per-carat or total stone value on the bill. Some jewellers also add a certification or hallmarking fee. These are usually small but should be shown clearly.
Remember that at exchange, jewellers may value stones very differently from the purchase price, and some may not buy back stones at all. Policies vary, so check them for diamond jewellery especially.
For diamond jewellery, it is useful to separate small melee diamonds from a larger centre stone on the bill. Melee is often priced per carat for the total weight, while a centre stone may carry its own grading report and individual price. Understanding this split helps you see where the money goes and decide whether an upgrade in gold or in diamond quality gives you better value.
Lab-grown diamond jewellery follows the same formula, with the stone value typically lower per carat than natural diamonds. Always check that the bill clearly states whether diamonds are natural or lab-grown.
Step 5: GST on the total
GST is applied to the taxable value of the jewellery, which generally includes the gold value, labour and stones as billed. The rate is set by the government and may differ for labour-only job work, so check the current rate on the invoice and official sources.
The invoice should mention the GST rate, the tax amount and the jeweller's GSTIN. A proper GST bill is important not only for tax compliance but also as proof of purchase for exchange, buyback and insurance.
Avoid offers to skip GST in return for a lower price. The saving comes with real risks around purity, documentation and future resale.
Keep the invoice in a safe place along with any certificates. If you ever need to claim insurance, the GST invoice is usually the first document an insurer will ask for, so a clear and complete bill is valuable long after the purchase.
A worked method you can follow
Here is a template you can use with any day's rate. Write down the rate per gram for the purity. Multiply by net weight to get gold value. Add labour as quoted. Add stone value. Add hallmarking or certification charges if listed. Apply the GST rate shown on the bill to the taxable total. The result should match the final price within a few rupees of rounding.
If your calculation and the bill differ noticeably, ask the jeweller to walk you through it. Usually the difference is explained by the rate used, a weight discrepancy or a labour component you missed. Occasionally, it reveals an error that is easily corrected.
Use the same template when shopping online. Many brands show a price breakup on the product page. If not, request it from customer support before you buy.
Practising the formula on a couple of sample estimates before your actual purchase builds confidence. Ask a jeweller for a quote on a simple chain, work through the numbers at home and see whether your result matches. By the time you buy something significant, the process will feel familiar, and you will be able to focus on choosing a design you love.
Smart buyer takeaways
Gold value depends on the rate, purity and net weight. Labour and stones are where jewellers differ most. GST is fixed by law. Knowing these parts lets you compare quotes fairly, negotiate politely on labour and avoid paying gold rates on stones.
Combine price checks with hallmark checks: confirm the BIS logo, purity grade and HUID, and verify in the BIS Care app. With both the price and the purity verified, you can buy gold jewellery with complete confidence.
One more tip: keep a photo of each estimate and invoice on your phone, labelled with the jeweller's name and date. Over time, this gives you a personal reference of making charges and pricing patterns, which is helpful for future purchases and for advising family members who are buying for the first time.
