How labs identify lab-grown diamonds, in short
Gemmological labs identify lab-grown diamonds by looking at features invisible to the eye: trace elements, growth patterns and how the stone responds to light. Tools such as infrared and photoluminescence spectroscopy and deep ultraviolet fluorescence imaging reveal the fingerprints of CVD or HPHT growth. For buyers, the result is a report stating origin and, often, a laser inscription on the girdle.
This matters for everyone in the market. Buyers of natural diamonds need assurance their stone is not lab-grown, and buyers of lab-grown diamonds need confidence in accurate grading and disclosure. Identification underpins both.
You do not need to understand the physics to benefit, but knowing the basics helps you trust certificates and understand why a simple tester cannot do the job.
Here is a plain-language tour of the main techniques and what they mean for your purchase.

Why visual inspection is not enough
Lab-grown and natural diamonds share the same chemistry and crystal structure, so they look identical to the eye and behave identically in a thermal tester. Even an experienced jeweller with a loupe usually cannot tell them apart.
Some inclusions hint at origin, like metallic flux in HPHT stones, but many lab-grown stones are very clean, and natural stones can contain similar-looking features.
Labs therefore rely on instruments that detect differences at the atomic level, where the growth environment leaves distinct traces.
This is why certification by a recognised lab is so valuable.
There is also a practical reason labs cannot rely on inclusions. As growers improve, many lab-grown stones are cleaner than typical natural ones, leaving few visible clues. A very clean stone with no inclusions may be either, so instrument-based testing is the only reliable path to a confident answer.
Diamond types and spectroscopy
Diamonds are classified into types based on nitrogen and boron content. Most natural diamonds contain nitrogen in aggregated forms, while many lab-grown stones are very low in nitrogen or contain it in different arrangements.
Infrared spectroscopy measures how a stone absorbs infrared light, revealing its type. A stone classed as Type IIa, very low nitrogen, is rare in nature but common in CVD production, so it is flagged for further testing.
Photoluminescence spectroscopy, often at very low temperatures, shines lasers on the stone and records emitted light. Specific peaks can reveal defects associated with CVD growth or HPHT treatment.
These signatures act like fingerprints, letting labs determine origin with high confidence.
None of this needs to worry you as a shopper. The important point is that each growth method leaves measurable signatures, so a lab can document origin with confidence. Those signatures are also why a stone sent to a recognised lab cannot easily be misrepresented, which keeps the whole market more honest for everyone.
Fluorescence imaging
Deep ultraviolet imaging devices expose a stone to short-wave UV and photograph its surface fluorescence. Natural diamonds often show irregular patterns from their slow, complex growth.
CVD stones may show layered or striated patterns reflecting their layer-by-layer growth. HPHT stones often show geometric patterns, such as cross shapes, from their growth sectors.
HPHT stones may also show phosphorescence, a glow that lingers after UV is switched off.
These images are a quick visual clue for lab gemmologists and are used alongside spectroscopy.
Some labs publish simple guides to their identification methods, which make interesting reading if you are curious about the science behind your stone.
Some fluorescence patterns are distinctive enough that experienced lab staff can spot likely lab-grown stones in seconds, before any spectroscopy confirms the result. It is a useful efficiency step in a busy laboratory handling many stones a day.
Screening devices for the trade
Because lab-grown melee could be mixed into natural parcels, the industry has developed screening devices that quickly sort stones into likely natural or refer for further testing. Many manufacturers and jewellers use them.
These devices often rely on fluorescence or spectroscopy and can handle loose stones or set jewellery. They are designed to catch stones needing lab confirmation, not to give a full report.
Some devices are now accessible to retail jewellers, making screening more common at the point of sale.
If you buy natural diamond jewellery, ask whether the seller screens melee.
Laser inscriptions and reports
After identification and grading, labs typically laser-inscribe the girdle with the report number and, for lab-grown stones, a note like LAB-GROWN. The inscription is microscopic and does not affect appearance.
Reports state the stone's origin clearly, list the 4Cs and measurements and include comments on treatments or growth method where identified.
Verify report numbers online on the lab's website and check the inscription with a 10x loupe.
Inscriptions can be polished off, so the report and invoice remain important records.
What this means when you buy
For lab-grown purchases, ask for an independent report and check that the inscription and report match. Ensure the invoice states lab-grown diamond.
For natural purchases, insist on independent reports for significant stones confirming natural origin. Ask about melee screening.
For exchanges and resale, keep your report and invoice safe. Jewellers may screen stones before accepting them.
Understanding identification gives you confidence that the paperwork reflects reality.
If you are gifting a lab-grown diamond, include a printed copy of the report and mention how to view the inscription. Many recipients enjoy seeing the tiny laser writing for themselves through a loupe, and it makes the stone's documentation feel personal rather than just paperwork.
It is also sensible to photograph the report and the piece together on the day you receive it. That simple record links the documentation to the jewellery and is very useful for insurance claims, exchanges or resale conversations years later, when memories of the purchase details have faded.
A step-by-step look at a lab visit
When a stone arrives at a grading laboratory, it is first logged, weighed and measured, and its basic optical properties are checked to confirm it is diamond rather than a simulant. This early step rules out moissanite, cubic zirconia and other look-alikes within moments.
Next comes origin screening. The stone may go through infrared spectroscopy to determine its type and a fluorescence imaging device to reveal growth patterns. If anything suggests lab-grown origin or treatment, additional tests such as photoluminescence at low temperatures are carried out to confirm.
Once origin is settled, graders assess colour, clarity and cut under controlled conditions, often with more than one grader reviewing the same stone. The final results are compiled into a report, and the girdle may be laser-inscribed with the report number and origin.
The whole process is designed so that each stage checks the previous one. For you as a buyer, this layered approach is what gives a recognised lab report its credibility, and why it is worth far more than a simple tester reading at a counter.
If you are buying a natural diamond for a bridal set, laboratory identification is what assures you that you are paying for natural rarity. Without it, a lab-grown stone could be passed off at a much higher price, and you would have no way to know.
If you are buying lab-grown, identification protects you differently. It ensures your stone is graded accurately and honestly labelled, which matters for insurance, exchange and future resale. It also means the market can price lab-grown stones transparently instead of mixing them with natural goods.
In both cases, the takeaway is the same: rely on recognised labs and clear paperwork, not on appearance, testers or verbal assurances. That habit protects every diamond purchase you make, whether for daily wear, a festival gift or a family heirloom.
Limits and honest caveats
No system is perfect, but major labs have well-developed methods and continue updating them as growth techniques evolve. Very small stones are harder to test individually, which is why screening parcels matters.
Smaller or less-known labs may lack advanced equipment. Prefer recognised labs for significant stones.
If you ever doubt a stone, a recognised lab can retest it for a fee.
Overall, identification technology gives buyers strong protection when combined with reputable sellers and clear documentation.
