The short answer: soap, water and a soft brush
The safest way to clean diamond jewellery at home is to soak it for 15 to 20 minutes in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild, dye-free dish soap, brush gently behind the stone with a very soft toothbrush, rinse in a bowl of clean water and pat dry with a lint-free cloth. That routine works for natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds and moissanite alike, because all three are hard, non-porous stones that do not absorb water.
What makes a diamond look dull is almost never the stone itself. It is a thin film of skin oil, lotion, soap residue, dust and kitchen grease that collects on the pavilion, the pointed underside of the diamond. Light enters through the top and is meant to bounce off those lower facets and back to your eye. When the underside is coated, the light leaks out instead, and a bright stone starts to look glassy or grey. Clean the back, and the sparkle comes back.
This guide explains the method step by step, what to change for different settings, which household products to keep away from, and when a home clean is not enough.

What you need before you start
You do not need a special kit. Gather a small glass or ceramic bowl, lukewarm water that feels comfortable on your wrist, a mild liquid dish soap without moisturisers or bright colouring, a brand-new extra-soft toothbrush or a baby toothbrush, a second bowl of plain water for rinsing, and a clean microfibre or lint-free cotton cloth. A wooden toothpick is useful for lifting a stubborn bit of grime from under a prong, and a hair dryer on the cool setting helps with drying intricate pieces.
Work over a bowl or a folded towel, never over an open sink. Earring backs, small pendants and loosened stones disappear down drains faster than you expect. If you must use a sink, close the drain plug and lay a cloth at the bottom.
Avoid hot water from a geyser or kettle. Diamonds tolerate heat well, but some settings have glue, enamel, coloured gemstones or pearls alongside, and a sudden temperature change can crack a softer stone or loosen adhesive. Lukewarm is enough to soften grease.
Step-by-step: how to clean diamond jewellery at home
Step one: inspect before you soak. Hold the piece near a window and look at each prong or claw. Run a fingertip lightly over them and gently tap the piece near your ear. A rattle, a stone that moves or a prong that catches on cloth is a sign to stop and visit a jeweller first, because brushing can dislodge a loose diamond.
Step two: soak. Mix a few drops of soap into the lukewarm water and leave the jewellery in for 15 to 20 minutes. The soak does most of the work by loosening the film of oil on the pavilion.
Step three: brush. Hold the piece firmly and brush in small strokes, concentrating on the underside of the stone, the gallery below it and the inner shank of a ring where lotion builds up. Keep pressure light; you are lifting dirt, not scrubbing a vessel.
Step four: rinse in the second bowl of clean water, then once more under a gentle tap stream with the drain closed. Soap left behind dries into its own dull film.
Step five: dry. Pat with a lint-free cloth and let it air dry on the cloth, or use a cool hair dryer for clusters and pavé. Paper tissues leave fibres caught in prongs, so skip them.
Adjusting the method for different settings
Solitaire rings in four or six prong settings are the easiest to clean because light and water reach the stone from all sides. Spend extra time under the stone where the prongs meet, which is where hand cream sits.
Pavé and micro-pavé bands carry dozens of tiny diamonds held by beads of metal. They clean well with soaking, but brush only in one direction along the band and with very little pressure, since those tiny beads can lift with heavy scrubbing. Halo designs need the same care around the outer circle of small stones.
Bezel settings, where metal wraps around the stone's edge, can trap water and soap behind the rim. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a cool air stream so moisture does not sit inside.
Tennis bracelets and line necklaces have many hinged links. Soak them flat rather than coiled, brush each section and dry them laid straight. Stud earrings need attention on the post and backs, which collect skin residue; clean the backs separately.
Mangalsutras and pieces combining diamonds with black beads, thread, enamel or meenakari should not be soaked. Clean only the diamond portion with a barely damp brush and dry it at once, keeping water away from the beads and cord.
Lab-grown diamonds, moissanite and mixed stones
Lab-grown diamonds, whether made by CVD or HPHT, are chemically and physically diamond. They have the same hardness and respond to cleaning exactly like mined stones, so the soap-and-brush method applies without change. The same goes for moissanite, which is slightly less hard than diamond but still very durable and non-porous.
Where you need caution is the company your diamond keeps. Emeralds are often treated with oils or resins to improve clarity, so long soaks and ultrasonic cleaners can affect them. Pearls, opals, turquoise, coral and lapis are soft or porous and should never sit in soapy water. Tanzanite and some coloured stones dislike sudden temperature changes. If a ring has a diamond halo around one of these stones, clean it with a damp brush only, keeping water off the centre gem, and wipe dry.
Some diamonds sold at lower prices are clarity-enhanced with fracture filling. Harsh chemicals, heat and ultrasonic vibration can damage a filled stone. Your certificate or invoice usually states whether a stone has been treated; check it before trying anything stronger than soap.
Household products to keep away from diamonds
Many home tips you see online do more harm to the metal than good to the stone. Chlorine bleach and strong bathroom cleaners can attack gold alloys, weakening prongs over time. Toothpaste is abrasive and leaves fine scratches on gold and platinum surfaces, and it clogs settings with paste. Baking soda paste is similarly gritty. Vinegar and lemon juice are acids that can harm some metal finishes and softer stones.
Ammonia-based glass cleaners are sometimes suggested because they cut grease. They may be tolerable on a plain diamond set in platinum, but they can affect certain gold alloys, rhodium plating and treated stones, so the small gain is not worth it for most people. Mild soap is gentler and good enough.
Avoid scouring pads, nail brushes with stiff bristles and anything metal, such as pins or needles, to dig out dirt. A wooden toothpick is the hardest tool that should touch a setting.
Finally, skip the boiling-water method. Dropping jewellery into a pot of boiling water is a common tip, but thermal shock can crack included stones and damage anything glued or enamelled.
Are ultrasonic cleaners and steamers safe at home?
Home ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency vibration in water to shake loose dirt, and jewellers use professional versions every day. For a plain, well-set diamond in gold or platinum, they generally clean very well. The risk lies in what you cannot see. Vibration can loosen stones whose prongs are already worn, and it can widen internal fractures in diamonds with significant inclusions or feathers near the surface.
They are not suitable for fracture-filled diamonds, emeralds, pearls, opals, organic gems or pieces with enamel and glue. If you buy one, use it only for simple solitaires and studs that a jeweller has recently checked, keep cycles short and inspect the piece afterwards.
Steam cleaning is mostly a jeweller's tool. The high temperature and pressure suit a sturdy diamond ring but are risky for mixed-stone pieces, and home steamers rarely offer the control a workshop machine does. For most people, a weekly soap soak covers everything a steamer would.
How often to clean, and when to see a jeweller
A ring worn every day collects film fastest, so a quick soak once a week keeps it bright. Earrings and pendants that sit away from your hands need cleaning every two to four weeks. Pieces worn only for weddings and festivals benefit from a clean before you put them away, so that oils and makeup do not sit on them for months.
Between soaks, wipe your ring with a microfibre cloth after applying hand cream or cooking, and try to put on lotion and makeup before you put on jewellery. Simple habits slow the build-up.
Book a professional clean and check roughly once or twice a year for everyday pieces. A jeweller can look at prongs under magnification, tighten loose stones, and polish the metal. Many jewellers in India offer this as a service for their own customers, and policies vary, so ask at the store where you bought the piece. If your diamond still looks cloudy after a careful clean, the cause may be inside the stone or under a setting, and only a jeweller can tell you which.
For storage between wears, keep each diamond piece in its own soft pouch or compartment, because diamonds scratch other jewellery and even other diamonds.
