Quick answer for busy mornings
To clean gold jewellery at home, soak it for 10 to 15 minutes in lukewarm water with a few drops of mild liquid soap, brush gently with a very soft toothbrush, rinse in clean water and dry completely with a soft cotton or microfibre cloth. This simple method is safe for plain 22K, 18K and 14K gold and removes the skin oil, sweat, talc and makeup that make gold look flat.
Gold itself does not rust, and pure gold does not tarnish. The dullness you notice on bangles and chains comes from two sources: grime sitting on the surface and, in lower karats, the alloy metals such as copper and silver reacting slowly with air, sweat and chemicals. Washing handles the first. The second is mostly a lower-karat issue and is usually mild.
The rest of this guide covers how the method changes for different kinds of Indian gold jewellery, from daily chains to antique, kundan and temple sets that should never go near a bowl of water.

Know your gold before you wash it
Karat changes how gold behaves. 22K gold, the most common choice for Indian bridal and traditional jewellery, is about 91.6 percent gold. It is soft and rich yellow, scratches easily and rarely discolours. 18K, at 75 percent gold, is used widely for diamond and everyday fine jewellery; it is harder and holds stones better. 14K, at roughly 58.5 percent gold, is harder still and contains more alloy, which can darken slightly over time. The BIS hallmark with a HUID code stamped on the piece tells you the purity, so check it before you choose a cleaning method.
Finish matters too. High-polish gold shows every fingerprint but cleans quickly. Matte, brushed, sandblasted or textured finishes trap dirt in their grain and need softer brushing, since hard scrubbing can polish the texture away in patches. Rose gold gets its colour from copper and is fine with soap and water. White gold is usually rhodium plated, which wears in its own way and is covered in a separate guide.
Then look for anything that is not gold: stones, pearls, lac, wax, enamel, threads, glass, or a hollow construction. Those details decide whether the piece can be soaked at all.
Step-by-step: how to clean gold jewellery at home
Prepare a bowl of lukewarm water, not hot, and add a few drops of a gentle, colourless dish soap. Place solid gold pieces in it and leave them for 10 to 15 minutes. For chains, lay them in loosely so links are not twisted together.
Lift each piece out and brush with an extra-soft toothbrush, paying attention to clasps, the inside of bangles, the backs of earrings and the gaps between chain links where sweat and powder build up. Use light strokes. 22K gold is soft enough that firm brushing with a medium brush can leave fine lines over time.
Rinse in a second bowl of clean water, then under a slow tap stream with the drain plugged. Soap residue leaves a cloudy film on gold just as it does on glass.
Dry thoroughly. Pat with a soft cotton cloth and leave the piece on a dry towel for half an hour, or use a hair dryer on cool for chains and jhumkas whose small cavities hold water. Moisture trapped inside a clasp or a hollow bead is what leads to discoloured spots later.
Finish with a dry buff using a clean microfibre cloth. This alone restores much of the shine.
Antique, temple, kundan and polki pieces need a dry clean
Many treasured Indian pieces are not solid gold through and through, even when the visible surface is high karat. Antique and temple jewellery often has an oxidised or darkened finish applied deliberately to bring out carved detail. Washing and brushing that finish removes the antique look, and it cannot be put back at home.
Kundan and polki jewellery set stones using gold foil, with lac or wax filling behind the stones, and the back is often finished with meenakari enamel. Water seeping behind the stones can lift foil, cloud the colour and loosen settings. Pieces strung on silk or cotton thread, such as some necklaces and maang tikkas, can stain or weaken when wet.
For all of these, use a dry method. Wipe with a soft, dry cotton cloth after each wear to remove sweat and makeup. Use a clean, soft makeup brush to dust out carvings. If you must remove a mark, use a barely damp cotton bud on the metal only and dry immediately.
Lightweight hollow gold, common in large jhumkas and bangles, should also stay out of soaks, because water can enter through tiny vents and stay trapped. A damp cloth wipe is safer.
Popular home remedies, checked
Reetha (soapnut) water is a traditional favourite and is a mild natural cleanser. It is generally fine for plain solid gold, followed by a thorough rinse, but it offers no real advantage over a gentle soap and should not be used on stone-set or antique pieces.
Turmeric and haldi water rituals around weddings leave yellow stains on stones and settings rather than cleaning them, so wipe jewellery promptly after a haldi ceremony.
Toothpaste and baking soda are abrasive. They make gold look bright for a day by scratching off the top layer, and repeated use dulls high polish and wears away fine engraving. Avoid them.
Lemon, tamarind and vinegar are acids. Pure gold is not affected, but alloy metals in 14K and 18K and the stones, enamel and lac around them can be. The polish they seem to give is not worth the risk.
Chlorine bleach is the one product to keep far away. It can attack the alloys in gold over time, making jewellery brittle. Keep pieces off during cleaning chores and away from bleach-based bathroom products.
Gold with diamonds, gemstones or pearls
For gold set with diamonds, cubic zirconia or moissanite, the regular soap soak is fine, and you can brush a little more under the stones where film builds up. If any stone looks loose, stop and get it checked before brushing.
For gold set with emeralds, rubies, sapphires and other coloured stones, keep soaks short and the water lukewarm, because many coloured stones are treated in ways that dislike heat and long exposure to water. Emeralds in particular should not be soaked at all; brush the gold around them with a damp brush instead.
Pearls, coral and other organic gems must stay dry. On a gold pendant with a pearl drop, clean the gold part with a barely damp cloth and dry it, then wipe the pearl with a soft dry cloth only.
If you are unsure what a stone is, treat it as delicate. Your invoice or certificate normally lists the stones, and the seller can tell you what cleaning they recommend for that piece.
Small habits that keep gold shining longer
Put jewellery on last, after moisturiser, sunscreen, hair oil and makeup have settled, and take it off first when you come home. Hair oil in particular coats chains and earrings fast in Indian routines.
Wipe pieces with a soft cloth before putting them away, especially in humid months and after weddings or long days when you have perspired.
Remove rings and bangles while kneading atta, cleaning with chemicals or applying mehendi, which can stain the gaps in settings.
Store pieces separately in soft pouches or lined boxes. 22K gold is soft and scratches when pieces rub against each other or against harder stones.
For deep cleaning, re-polishing and checking clasps, take your gold to a trusted jeweller occasionally. Many jewellers offer cleaning for their customers, though whether it is free and how often you can use it varies by seller, so ask when you buy.
Signs your gold needs a jeweller, not a soak
A home clean handles grime. It does not fix wear. Take gold to a jeweller if a clasp slips open easily, if a chain link has stretched or shows a thin spot, if prongs on a stone setting look flattened or bent, or if solder joints on bangles or earrings show a dark line or gap. These are structural issues and cleaning can make them worse.
Stubborn dark patches on 14K gold that do not wash off may be alloy discolouration, which a jeweller can usually remove with professional polishing. Persistent green or black marks on your skin under a gold ring often come from a combination of alloy, cosmetics and moisture rather than fake gold; washing the ring and your skin usually helps.
If you are ever unsure whether a piece is genuine gold, a hallmark with a HUID code can be verified using the BIS Care app. That check is more reliable than any home test with acids or magnets.
