The most accurate home method in one line
The most accurate way to measure ring size at home is to measure the inner diameter of a ring that already fits the same finger, in millimetres, and match it to the jeweller's size chart. If you do not have such a ring, wrap a thin strip of non-stretch paper around the base of your finger, mark where it meets, measure the length in millimetres and match that circumference to the chart.
Both methods give a reliable starting point when done carefully, at the right time of day, with a few repeat readings. Below are four methods, ranked from most to least reliable, with the common mistakes that make people order the wrong size.
Once you have a number, our ring size chart for India converts it into an Indian size and an approximate US size.

Before you measure: timing and preparation
Finger size changes through the day. Measure in the evening, indoors at a comfortable temperature, when your hands are warm but not swollen. Avoid measuring right after a workout, a hot bath, a salty meal or a long journey, and avoid measuring in a cold air-conditioned room, which shrinks fingers.
Measure the exact finger and hand you will wear the ring on. The right hand is often a little larger for right-handed people, and ring fingers on the two hands can differ by a size.
Keep a millimetre ruler or a steel measuring tape ready. Cloth tailoring tapes are fine for circumference if they have not stretched. Use a fine pen for marks, since a thick marker line can add half a millimetre.
Plan to take the measurement three times, ideally on two different days. If the readings are close, use the middle one. If they differ a lot, measure again later; a variable reading usually means your hands were warm or cold during one of them.
Method 1: measure a ring that already fits
Pick a ring that fits the intended finger comfortably, ideally one with a similar band width to the ring you plan to buy. Place it flat on a ruler and measure straight across the inside, from inner edge to inner edge, through the centre. Do not include the metal of the band. Measure two or three directions, since rings sometimes become slightly oval with wear, and take the average.
Note the figure to a tenth of a millimetre if you can, for example 16.5 mm. Then find the closest inner diameter on the seller's chart.
If you are measuring for a surprise gift, borrow a ring the person wears on the correct finger for a few minutes. Another trick is to press the ring into a small bar of soap or a piece of soft clay to make an impression and measure the inner circle later. Tracing the inside of the ring on paper with a sharp pencil also works.
This method is accurate because it is based on a real ring that is already comfortable. Its only weakness is if the borrowed ring is worn on a different finger or is a very different width.
Method 2: the paper strip method
Cut a strip of plain paper about 5 mm wide and 10 cm long. Paper is better than string or thread because it does not stretch and lies flat, so your reading is more consistent.
Wrap the strip snugly around the base of your finger, where the ring will sit. It should be firm but not tight, and you should be able to slide it over the knuckle with slight resistance. Mark the point where the paper overlaps with a fine pen.
Unwrap, lay the strip flat against a ruler and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres. This is your finger's circumference. For example, 52 mm is close to Indian size 13 on the standard chart.
Then do a knuckle check. Wrap the strip around your knuckle as well. If the knuckle measurement is clearly larger, choose a size between the two, because the ring has to pass over the knuckle. If they are similar, use the base measurement.
String or thread can be used if paper is not available, but pull it gently and evenly, since string tends to bite into skin and give a slightly small reading.
Method 3: printable and plastic ring sizers
Many jewellers offer free printable ring sizers on their websites, either as a set of circles to match an existing ring against or a paper strip with numbered slots that you wrap around your finger. Some also sell or send plastic adjustable sizers that loop like a cable tie.
Printable sizers are only accurate if they print at the correct scale. Before using one, measure the test line or ruler printed on the page; if a 50 mm reference line does not measure exactly 50 mm, your printer has scaled the page. Print again with page scaling set to actual size or 100 percent.
Plastic loop sizers are convenient and reasonably accurate when you pull them to a comfortable snugness rather than as tight as possible. Read the size at the indicator, slide it over your knuckle to test, and repeat a couple of times.
Whichever sizer you use, use the one from the jeweller you are buying from when possible. It will match that brand's sizing, which removes the small differences between charts.
Method 4: a jeweller's sizing ring set
If you can get to a store, metal sizing rings on a jeweller's key ring remain the most accurate option, because you feel exactly how a real band of each size sits on your finger. Try two or three sizes around your estimate, wearing each for a minute and moving your hand.
Many jewellers also offer wide and narrow sizing rings. Ask to try a width close to the ring you want, especially for bands of 5 mm and more.
Buying from a store also lets you ask practical questions: whether your chosen design can be resized, how much metal can be added or removed, and what their policy is if the size turns out wrong. Policies vary by seller and design, so get the answer in writing or on the invoice.
If you want a home-only process, some jewellers ship sizer kits or offer home try-on visits in selected cities. Check current availability on the jeweller's website at the time you order.
Common mistakes that lead to a wrong size
Measuring with stretchy material such as a rubber band, a hair tie or a loose cloth tape gives a reading that is too small.
Wrapping too tightly. The strip should sit like a comfortable ring, not like a tourniquet. If it leaves a mark, loosen it.
Measuring a ring's outer diameter. Always measure the inside edge to inside edge.
Ignoring the knuckle. A ring that fits the base perfectly is useless if you cannot get it over the knuckle.
Measuring only once, at the wrong time. One reading after a hot day out or in a chilly room can be a full size away.
Using a different finger. Index, middle and ring fingers differ, and left and right hands differ.
Assuming all charts match. Two jewellers can label the same millimetre measurement as different sizes, so always match your millimetres against the specific seller's chart.
What to do with your measurement
Write down your result in millimetres, both diameter and circumference if you can, along with the finger, hand and date. Millimetres are the universal language between Indian, US, UK and European sizes, so keeping that number saves you measuring again for each shop.
Convert it using the jeweller's chart or our ring size chart for India. If you land between two sizes, choose the larger for wide bands, rings worn in hot weather and if your knuckles are prominent. Choose the smaller for slim stacking bands and if you want a solitaire to stay upright.
If you are buying a ring to wear on a different finger from the one you measured, measure again rather than guessing. Middle fingers are usually larger than ring fingers, and little fingers are noticeably smaller, so a size borrowed from another finger is rarely right. The same applies if you plan to move an engagement ring to the other hand after the wedding.
Before placing an order, especially for a diamond or eternity band, confirm the seller's resizing and exchange terms. If you are unsure, an adjustable or easily resizable design is the safest choice for a gift.
