How to read a diamond certificate in five minutes
Learning how to read a diamond certificate is simpler than it looks: start with the report number and verify it online, confirm shape and measurements, read the 4Cs, then check proportions, fluorescence, the inclusion plot and the comments section. Finally, check whether the report says natural or laboratory-grown. If every line matches the product page and the stone itself, the certificate is doing its job.
A certificate packs a lot of information onto one card or page, and most buyers glance at colour and clarity and stop there. Reading every line takes a few extra minutes but reveals details that change value and appearance, such as treatments, unusual proportions or a girdle that could chip. Treat this guide as a checklist to keep beside you the first few times.
It is also worth reading the certificate before you fall in love with the jewellery. Once you are emotionally attached to a ring, it is easy to skim over a comment that should have made you pause. Reading first and admiring second keeps the decision clear.

Step 1: report number, date and lab
At the top you will find the laboratory name, the report number and the date of examination. The report number is the stone's identity. Enter it on the lab's official verification page, typed yourself rather than through a link sent by a seller, and confirm the online record matches the paper.
The date is useful because a very old report may predate any later damage or alteration, such as a chip or recut. For an older or second-hand stone, consider asking whether a fresh report is possible. Also check the report type; some labs issue full reports and shorter summary reports with less detail.
Look at the security features too. Many labs print holograms, microtext, QR codes or watermarks on their reports to make forgery harder. A QR code can be a convenient shortcut, but it is safer to type the report number manually on the lab's official site, because a counterfeit card could carry a QR code that leads to a look-alike page. If the online record shows a different weight, shape or date, treat the paper copy as suspect until the seller explains.
Step 2: shape, cutting style and measurements
Next comes the shape and cutting style, such as round brilliant, oval modified brilliant or emerald step cut. Below it are the measurements in millimetres. For a round stone this shows minimum and maximum diameter by depth; for fancy shapes it shows length by width by depth.
These numbers tell you the face-up size, which matters more to the eye than carat weight. They also act as a fingerprint: if a seller sends you a video with a ruler or gauge, the stone should measure close to these figures. A mismatch is a reason to pause the purchase until it is explained.
For fancy shapes, use the measurements to calculate the length-to-width ratio by dividing the first number by the second. An oval at around 1.3 to 1.5 looks classic, while a higher figure looks slimmer and more elongated. There is no correct ratio, only your preference, but knowing the number helps you compare listings that otherwise look similar in photographs.
Step 3: the 4Cs grades
The heart of the report lists carat weight, usually to two decimal places, colour grade on the D-to-Z scale, clarity grade from FL to I3, and, for round brilliants, a cut grade. Check each against the product listing. Sellers sometimes round weights up in titles, so a "1 carat" listing might be a 0.96 carat stone on paper.
Remember that each grade is a range. Two G VS2 diamonds can look slightly different. The grades help you shortlist; videos and measurements help you choose. For coloured or fancy-colour diamonds, the colour section will describe hue and intensity instead of a letter grade.
Step 4: proportions, polish, symmetry and girdle
Many reports include a proportions diagram showing table percentage, total depth percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle thickness and culet size. Polish and symmetry are usually listed as separate grades. You do not need to memorise ideal numbers, but extremes deserve questions.
Look closely at the girdle description. Phrases like "extremely thin" can indicate a higher risk of chipping, while "very thick" or "extremely thick" can hide weight and make the stone look smaller. A culet described as "none" or "pointed" is normal for modern rounds; a large culet may show as a visible dot through the table.
Step 5: fluorescence, plot and key characteristics
Fluorescence is listed as None, Faint, Medium, Strong or Very Strong, often with a colour such as blue. Most stones with None to Medium look perfectly clear. If fluorescence is strong, ask for a daylight video to check for haziness.
The plot is a map of the diamond's top and bottom with symbols for inclusions, along with a list of key characteristics like crystal, feather, cloud or needle. Red symbols usually show internal features and green ones external, though conventions vary. Check whether the main inclusions sit under the table, where they are more visible, or near the edge, where a prong might hide them.
Step 6: comments, inscriptions and origin
The comments section is easy to skip and often the most important. It may mention additional clouds not shown, a laser inscription such as the report number on the girdle, clarity grade based on clouds, surface graining, or treatments. For lab-grown stones, it may mention the growth method or that the stone shows evidence of post-growth treatment.
If the report says the girdle is inscribed, ask the seller to show the inscription under magnification in a video. That inscription links the physical stone to the paper. If anything in the comments is unclear, ask the seller to explain it in writing before you pay.
Every credible report should make origin unmistakable. Lab-grown reports usually state "laboratory-grown diamond" prominently and often use different colours or layouts from natural diamond reports. Some also inscribe "LG" or "lab grown" with the report number on the girdle.
If a seller presents a stone as natural but the report says lab-grown, or the report is vague about origin, stop and ask questions. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, but their prices are very different, and you should always know which one you are paying for.
After reading: matching paper to stone and invoice
Once you have read the report, match it with three things: the product listing, the real stone in the video, and your tax invoice. The invoice should mention the certificate number, the diamond weight and quality, and the gold purity and weight. Keep the original certificate, invoice and packaging together.
These documents are your evidence for insurance, exchange or buyback, all of which typically vary by seller. A well-kept file also helps family members years later, when an heirloom ring is passed on and someone wonders exactly what it contains. Store a scanned copy in your email or cloud storage too.
Common mistakes when reading a diamond certificate
The first common mistake is reading only colour and clarity. Two stones with identical letters can differ greatly in cut, proportions and fluorescence, and those lines often explain why one is priced higher. Read the whole document, including the small print at the bottom and the reverse side, where some labs explain their grading scales and limitations.
The second mistake is trusting a scanned copy without verification. Images are easy to edit, so always confirm the report number on the lab's official website. The third is assuming a certificate covers the whole piece. A solitaire report describes only the centre stone; side stones, the gold and the craftsmanship are outside its scope, which is why the invoice and BIS hallmark matter as well.
A final mistake is forgetting that a report is a snapshot in time. If a stone has been worn for years, it may have small chips or abrasions that were not present when it was graded. For older pieces you plan to sell or insure, a jeweller's inspection or a fresh report gives a more accurate picture of its current condition.
