How to spot fake gold jewellery: the reliable method
The most reliable way to spot fake gold jewellery is to check for a genuine BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID, verify it in the BIS Care app, confirm details on a proper GST invoice and, for unmarked pieces, get an XRF or hallmarking centre test. Popular home tricks with magnets, vinegar or biting are unreliable and can damage jewellery.
Fake or underkarated gold can mean anything from plated base metal sold as solid gold to genuine gold that is lower in purity than claimed. Both cause real financial loss, especially at exchange or resale when testing reveals the truth.
This guide covers verification methods that work, warning signs to watch for and what to do if you suspect a problem.
Fake gold problems are not limited to small roadside sellers. Occasionally, issues arise with online listings, social media shops and even established-looking stores. The good news is that the tools available to consumers today, especially HUID verification, make it much easier to catch problems at the point of purchase rather than years later.

Check the hallmark first
Genuine hallmarked jewellery carries the BIS triangle logo, a purity grade such as 22K916 or 18K750, and a six-digit alphanumeric HUID. The marks are tiny and laser engraved, usually on the clasp, inner band or back.
Look for all three components. A piece showing only 916 or a jeweller's own stamp, without the BIS logo and HUID, has not been verified under the current system. That does not prove it is fake, but it removes your strongest assurance.
Watch for marks that look crude, misspelled, incomplete or inconsistent with the item. Counterfeit stamps exist, which is why the next step matters.
It also helps to know what genuine hallmarks look like. Ask a trusted jeweller to show you a hallmarked piece under magnification, or examine one you already own and have verified. Once you are familiar with the crisp, clean appearance of genuine laser marks, odd-looking stamps become easier to spot.
Verify the HUID in the BIS Care app
Enter the HUID into the official BIS Care app. It should return details including purity and type of article. If the code is not found, or shows a different article type or purity, the hallmark may be copied or fraudulent.
Do this before paying in store, and immediately on delivery for online orders. Double-check for typing errors, such as confusing zero and O.
HUID verification is fast, free and the single most effective check available to consumers.
If the app shows an article type that differs from the piece, such as a pendant code on a ring, ask the seller for an explanation. Occasionally there may be an administrative error, but you should not complete the purchase until the mismatch is resolved. Genuine sellers will be keen to clarify quickly.
Save a screenshot of the verification result along with a photo of the piece and the bill. This creates a complete record of what you checked and when.
Professional testing: XRF and more
XRF, or X-ray fluorescence, analysers estimate the composition of the metal surface in minutes without damaging the piece. Many jewellers and testing centres offer this service. It is excellent for checking unmarked or older jewellery.
Because XRF reads the surface, heavily plated items can sometimes mislead it. For important cases, hallmarking centres or assay labs can perform more thorough tests, including fire assay, which is very accurate but destroys a small sample.
Touchstone testing, a traditional method of rubbing gold on a stone and applying acid, is still used by some jewellers. It requires skill and can mark the piece slightly.
XRF testing services are often available at nominal or no cost at many jewellers, particularly when you are considering exchange. Hallmarking centres may offer testing to the public for a fee. Use these services whenever you are unsure about a piece, especially before buying second-hand or inherited jewellery or before a large exchange.
Home tricks that do not work
Magnet test: gold is not magnetic, but many fake metals, such as brass and copper, are not magnetic either. A piece not attracted to a magnet is not proven genuine. Strong attraction suggests a ferrous core, but the test is limited.
Bite, scratch and vinegar tests can damage jewellery and give misleading results. Plated items may pass surface tests, and genuine low-karat gold may fail them. The ceramic streak test is unreliable and can scratch your jewellery.
Skip these and rely on hallmark verification and professional testing instead.
Density testing, which compares weight in air and water, is used by some professionals and can indicate whether a piece is consistent with gold of a certain purity. However, it requires precise equipment and can be misleading for hollow pieces or those with stones. It is best left to experts rather than attempted at home.
Red flags when buying
Prices well below the day's gold value for the stated weight and purity. Sellers who discourage hallmark checks, refuse to issue a GST invoice or offer discounts for skipping the bill. Vague product descriptions online with no karat, weight or HUID.
Sellers without verifiable addresses or GSTIN, social media sellers asking for advance payment only, and deals pushed with urgency. Pieces that feel unusually light or heavy for their size.
Any one of these is a reason to pause, ask questions or walk away.
Be particularly careful during festival rushes, when stores are crowded and buyers feel pressured to decide quickly. Fraudsters sometimes exploit busy periods. Take your time, verify every hallmark and do not let urgency override caution.
Online, watch for listings that use brand names or images from well-known jewellers but are sold by unrelated sellers at prices far below market.
Also be cautious of exchange offers that seem unusually generous, such as promises to pay well above the market rate for old gold. Some schemes use high exchange values to distract from overpriced or underkarated new jewellery. Always evaluate both sides of an exchange, verifying the purity of the new piece as carefully as the valuation of the old one.
Inherited and second-hand jewellery
Old family jewellery may lack HUID, carry older hallmarks or have no marks at all. That does not make it fake, but its purity is unknown until tested. Before exchange or sale, get an XRF test or hallmarking centre test.
When buying second-hand jewellery from individuals, insist on testing before payment. Prefer established jewellers who sell verified pre-owned pieces with documentation.
Keep test reports along with photos and weights in your jewellery records.
Gold-plated items sold honestly as fashion jewellery are not fake; they are a different product category. The problem arises only when plated items are misrepresented as solid gold. Understanding the difference helps you shop confidently across categories without suspicion of every gold-coloured piece.
Similarly, gold-coloured jewellery from abroad may carry foreign purity stamps such as 375 or 417, which indicate 9K and 10K respectively. These are genuine gold grades in other markets but contain much less gold than typical Indian jewellery. Know what each number means before comparing prices, so you do not mistake a low-karat piece for a bargain on higher purity.
What to do if you find a problem
If a newly purchased piece fails HUID verification or testing, contact the seller immediately with photos, the invoice and test results. Use the return process for online purchases. For hallmark-related issues, you can also raise complaints with BIS through official channels, and consumer forums are available for disputes.
Prevention is easiest: buy from reputable sellers, verify every hallmark, insist on a detailed bill and keep records. These habits make fake gold very unlikely to reach your jewellery box.
Share these checks with family members, especially older relatives who may buy from long-trusted local jewellers without verifying hallmarks. Trust built over decades is valuable, but a quick HUID check protects everyone and takes nothing away from that relationship.
Ultimately, the safest gold is gold you have verified yourself. Combine a trusted seller, a valid HUID hallmark, a detailed GST invoice and, where needed, a professional test. With these four layers of protection, fake gold has very little chance of slipping through.
