Hypoallergenic fine jewellery: the shortlist
The metals least likely to irritate sensitive skin are platinum, high-karat yellow gold, palladium-based white gold, implant-grade titanium and niobium, with genuine 925 sterling silver suiting most people too. No metal is 100 per cent allergy-proof, because a small number of people react to gold or other metals as well, but these options avoid the most common trigger, nickel. This guide compares hypoallergenic fine jewellery metals one by one, so you can weigh comfort against look, durability and budget.
Hypoallergenic is a marketing word rather than a regulated standard, so the label alone tells you little. What matters is the actual composition of the alloy, the posts and the clasps.

Platinum
Platinum used in fine jewellery is typically around 95 per cent pure, often marked Pt950, and the balance is usually other platinum-group metals such as ruthenium or iridium. That makes it one of the most skin-friendly metals available. It is naturally white, so it does not need rhodium plating that wears off, and it develops a soft grey patina over time rather than changing colour.
The trade-offs are cost and weight. Platinum is dense, so a ring feels heavier than the same design in gold, and it is priced higher, partly because of the metal and partly because fewer workshops are equipped to work it. For an engagement ring or wedding band worn every day by someone with very sensitive skin, many people consider it worth the premium.
Yellow and rose gold by karat
Pure gold is inert and rarely causes reactions, so higher karats are usually kinder to skin. 22K gold, the traditional Indian choice, is mostly gold, with silver and copper making up the rest. 18K contains three-quarters gold and is common for diamond jewellery because it holds stones more securely. 14K, at a little over half gold, is harder and cheaper but has more room for other metals.
Rose gold gets its colour from copper. Copper allergy is uncommon, but some people find rose gold leaves a faint mark or mild irritation in heat and humidity. Yellow gold in 18K or 22K is the gentlest everyday option among golds for most sensitive wearers.
White gold: palladium versus nickel alloys
White gold is not one metal but a family of alloys. Some use nickel to whiten the gold, and these are hard and bright but are the main fine jewellery trigger for people with nickel allergy. Others use palladium, a platinum-group metal, which is far more skin-friendly though usually costlier.
Most white gold is also rhodium-plated for a brighter finish. The plating protects skin at first, but it wears on rings and bracelets, especially on the palm side. If you love the white gold look and have sensitive skin, ask specifically for palladium white gold, or consider platinum or sterling silver instead.
925 sterling silver, titanium and niobium
Sterling silver is 92.5 per cent silver, usually with copper making up the remainder. It is normally nickel-free and tolerated by most people, and it is the most affordable precious metal for fine jewellery. Hallmarked silver from a reputable seller is the safe route; unbranded silver may contain other metals or be silver-plated brass.
Silver does tarnish, and some people notice a grey mark on the skin in humid weather, which is a chemical reaction rather than an allergy. Many silver pieces are also rhodium-plated, which adds a barrier but wears over time.
Implant-grade titanium, the type used in medical implants, is a go-to metal for new piercings and for people who react to almost everything else. It is light, strong and does not tarnish. Titanium can be anodised to colours such as gold, blue or purple without plating, which is useful for playful ear stacks.
Niobium is another highly biocompatible metal used by professional piercers and can be anodised in a similar way. Both metals are generally used for studs, labrets and hoops rather than diamond-set fine jewellery, and they cannot be resized like gold. Make sure titanium is labelled implant grade rather than a generic alloy.
Other metals and finishes to watch
Surgical stainless steel is widely sold as hypoallergenic, but some grades contain nickel bound into the alloy. Many people are fine with it, while the most sensitive react. Gold-plated, gold-filled and vermeil pieces have a base metal or silver core under gold, and once the gold layer wears, the core touches your skin. For people with known allergies, solid metal is the safer investment.
Do not forget findings. A platinum pendant on a nickel-alloy chain clasp, or 18K studs with base-metal backs, can cause the same reaction as a cheap piece. Ask what the clasp, posts and butterfly backs are made of.
Coatings deserve a mention too. Some brands apply a clear lacquer or e-coat to silver and plated pieces to slow tarnish. It can reduce skin contact with the metal for a while, but it scratches and wears unevenly, so it is not a dependable allergy solution. Black rhodium and coloured platings behave in the same way: attractive, but temporary as a barrier.
Mixed-metal designs, such as a yellow gold ring with a white gold head or a two-tone bangle, may combine a skin-friendly alloy with a less friendly one. Ask about each part separately, particularly the section that sits against the palm side of the finger or the inside of the wrist, where friction and sweat are greatest.
Comparing the metals side by side
For skin comfort, platinum, implant-grade titanium and niobium sit at the top, followed by 22K and 18K yellow gold, palladium white gold and genuine sterling silver. Lower-karat and rose gold come next for most people, with nickel white gold and plated base metals at the bottom for anyone already sensitised.
For durability, platinum and titanium are hard-wearing in different ways: platinum bends rather than chips and holds prongs securely for decades, while titanium resists scratches but cannot be resized. 14K and 18K gold are tougher than 22K, which scratches and bends more easily. Sterling silver is the softest of the group and tarnishes, though it is easy to polish.
For price, sterling silver is the most affordable, titanium studs are modest, gold rises with karat and weight, and platinum is usually at the top. Making charges and design complexity can change the order for individual pieces, so compare final prices rather than metal rates alone.
For colour, the warm yellow of 18K and 22K gold suits traditional Indian outfits, while platinum, palladium white gold and silver give a cool white tone for diamonds and western wear. Titanium and niobium offer anodised colours, which no traditional metal can match.
Questions to ask before you buy
Ask the seller what the full alloy is, not just the karat, and whether it contains nickel. Ask whether the posts, backs, clasps and jump rings are the same metal as the main piece. For white gold, ask whether the alloy is palladium or nickel based and how often rhodium replating is recommended.
Ask about the return policy if the piece causes a reaction. Policies typically do not cover allergy once a piece has been worn, so it is better to clarify before buying than after. If you are ordering online, keep earrings and rings in their original packaging until you have checked the details in the listing and on the invoice.
For piercing jewellery, ask the studio for the material grade and whether it meets implant standards. A reputable piercer will happily tell you, and will generally discourage plated jewellery for new piercings.
Matching metal to your situation
For a first or freshly healed piercing, implant-grade titanium, niobium or solid gold studs are the standard advice. For an engagement ring or daily band, platinum or 18K yellow gold offer the best mix of comfort and durability. For budget-friendly everyday pieces, hallmarked 925 silver works for most people.
If you react even to gold, or have had reactions to several metals, see a dermatologist for a patch test before investing in an expensive piece. Knowing exactly which metal you react to is cheaper than buying and retiring jewellery by trial and error.
