Why monsoon is hard on jewellery
Jewellery care in monsoon humidity comes down to three things: keep pieces dry, keep air around them dry, and check vulnerable items such as silver, pearls and threaded jewellery more often. Damp air speeds up silver tarnish, weakens silk and cotton threads, dulls pearls and lets grime build up in settings, so a small seasonal routine from June to September saves a lot of repair work later.
Indian monsoons are unusually demanding. In Mumbai, Kochi, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata and the North-East, relative humidity can stay very high for weeks, and rooms never fully dry out. Even inland cities see damp cupboards and musty wardrobes. Solid gold and platinum are largely unaffected chemically, but their stones, settings, clasps and storage are not. Silver reacts with sulphur compounds in air, and moisture accelerates it. Organic materials, such as pearls, coral, silk thread and wooden or lac elements, absorb moisture and change. This guide explains what to watch for and gives a simple seasonal plan.

How humidity affects each type of jewellery
Sterling silver is the most visibly affected. Tarnish, the yellow, brown and finally black film, forms faster in humid, polluted air, and oxidised designs can lose their contrast as tarnish spreads evenly. Gold-plated and vermeil pieces can develop spots where the base metal reacts through tiny pores in the plating. Solid 14K, 18K and 22K gold resist corrosion, but lower-karat alloys can show slight discolouration over time, especially where sweat collects.
Stone-set pieces face different problems. Damp grime collects under diamonds and gems, making them look dull, and moisture trapped behind closed-back settings, as in many kundan and polki pieces, can damage the foil that gives the stones their glow. Pearls are organic and need some moisture, but constant dampness combined with sweat and cosmetics can dull their lustre and weaken the silk they are strung on. Threaded items, such as black bead mangalsutras on thread, kalava-style threads, tasselled jhumkas and beaded necklaces, can stretch, fray, develop mildew or lose colour. Lac bangles may soften or crack, and imitation pieces often discolour fastest.
Drying jewellery after rain and sweat
Getting caught in a downpour or a sweaty commute is unavoidable in July. The key is to dry pieces the same day rather than leaving them damp overnight. Remove jewellery once you are home, rinse metal-and-diamond pieces with plain water if they met muddy rain or heavy sweat, then pat dry with a soft lint-free cloth. Pay attention to the backs of settings, chain links, clasps and earring backs, where water hides.
Then let pieces air-dry fully on a clean, dry cloth in a well-ventilated room, ideally with a fan running, before storing them. Avoid hairdryers on high heat, radiators or direct sun on a window sill; heat can damage pearls, enamel, glue in some settings and thread. For pearls and threaded jewellery, do not rinse at all unless necessary. Simply wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then lay flat to dry so the thread does not stretch. If a threaded mangalsutra or beaded necklace gets soaked, lay it flat on a towel and allow a full day before wearing or storing it, and check the knots afterwards.
Using silica gel and anti-tarnish aids correctly
Silica gel sachets, the small packets found in shoe and electronics boxes, absorb moisture and are one of the simplest monsoon tools. Place one or two sachets in each closed jewellery box or zip pouch, especially with silver. They are not a cure-all. Silica gel works best in a sealed or nearly sealed container; in an open drawer it quickly saturates. Replace or recharge it regularly during the monsoon. Some sachets change colour when saturated, which makes it easy to know when to swap them.
Many silica gel types can be dried in a warm oven or under sun and reused, but follow the instructions on the packet and keep them away from children and pets. Anti-tarnish strips and cloth pouches that absorb sulphur compounds work alongside silica gel for silver. Chalk pieces wrapped in tissue are a traditional household option some families use to absorb moisture. Pearls are an exception: they should not be sealed in an airtight bag with lots of desiccant for long periods, as complete dryness can harm them too. Keep them in a soft cloth pouch in a box that breathes slightly.
Special care for pearls and threaded jewellery
Pearls and threaded pieces need the most attention in monsoon. Put pearls on last after makeup, perfume and hair products, and wipe them with a soft cloth after each wear to remove sweat. Store them flat, never hanging, because a damp silk thread stretches under weight. Check pearl strands at the start and end of the season for loose knots, gaps between pearls or a fuzzy, discoloured thread. Many jewellers suggest restringing regularly worn pearls periodically; how often depends on wear, so ask yours.
For black bead mangalsutras on thread, tasselled earrings and beaded necklaces, look for fraying near clasps, colour bleeding from dyed thread, and a musty smell that signals mildew. If you wear a thread-based mangalsutra daily, consider switching to a version on a gold chain for the season, keeping the threaded one for rituals and occasions. Patwa or silk-thread jewellery should be dried thoroughly and stored with good airflow. Replacing a worn thread is inexpensive compared with losing beads or a pendant when it finally snaps on a crowded street.
Extra precautions for coastal cities
If you live in Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Vizag, Goa, Mangaluru or any coastal town, you face salt air on top of humidity. Salt deposits are slightly corrosive and attract moisture, so silver tarnishes faster and plated pieces may pit. A gentle rinse with plain water after a beach visit or a walk along the sea front, followed by thorough drying, removes salt before it settles. Keep jewellery stored away from windows facing the sea, and avoid bathrooms for storage, since they are the most humid rooms in any home.
Coastal residents often benefit from storing silver in individual zip bags with a small silica gel sachet and an anti-tarnish strip, opening them only when needed. Gold and diamond pieces are less affected by salt itself but still collect grime, so a monthly gentle clean during the season helps. If you use a dehumidifier or run your air conditioner in dry mode, keep your jewellery cupboard in that room. Wardrobe-safe moisture absorbers sold for clothes cupboards can also help keep the whole space drier.
A simple monsoon jewellery routine
Before the rains begin, do a quick audit. Clean and dry everything, refresh silica gel, separate silver and pearls into their own pouches, and have a jeweller check clasps, prongs and threads on pieces you wear often. Decide which items will be your monsoon daily set: solid gold or platinum, diamonds or lab-grown diamonds, and simple designs without threads or glued stones work best.
During the season, dry pieces the same day after rain, wipe them each evening, check silica gel every few weeks and keep heirloom kundan, polki and threaded festival pieces stored until needed. Before Ganesh Chaturthi or early festivals, take them out a few days early to check for tarnish or mildew. After the monsoon ends, clean, inspect and air everything once more. This takes a few minutes a week and prevents the most common monsoon damage.
What to do if damage has already happened
If silver has tarnished, a silver polishing cloth often restores light tarnish; heavier blackening can be cleaned professionally, but tell the jeweller if the piece has intentional oxidised detail so they do not remove it. If kundan or polki stones look cloudy from behind, take them to a jeweller who works with traditional settings rather than trying to open or dry them yourself.
For pearls that have lost lustre or have a stretched thread, a jeweller can clean and restring them. Mildew on thread usually means replacing the thread. If a stone feels loose after the season, stop wearing the piece until it is checked. Keep receipts and photographs of valuable pieces, which help with repairs and any insurance claims.
Finally, learn from the season. Note which pieces suffered, whether it was a silver chain kept in an open tray, a threaded earring left in a bathroom cabinet or a plated bangle worn on wet commutes, and change where or how you store and wear them next year. Most monsoon damage repeats in the same spots, so a short written note after the rains end makes the following June far easier to manage.
